We buy trucks in Bartlett

The federal mine register carries the Bartlett Underground Quarry, operated by Vulcan Construction Materials, with 5 employees against crushed and broken limestone. The mine type on that record is not surface. It is underground.

Three of the four Cook County crushed-stone rows we hold are the same — this one, Federal Underground at McCook, and the McCook workings. That is the USGS observation about urban zoning pushing new quarries away from population centres, resolved the other way round: by mining beneath one.

That geometry is the point of the whole thing. An open pit takes surface area, and in Cook County the surface is spoken for, which is the entire USGS observation in one line. Going underneath is what was left.

So the haul is short by construction. The radius filed against a stone row is 35 miles, it comes from freight cost per ton, and it is flagged as an estimate — but inside 35 miles of here there is a great deal of building going on, and the stone does not have to go far to reach any of it.

So dump trucks and aggregate haulers are the ordinary shape around a Vulcan Construction Materials working that sits underneath Cook County rather than on top of it, and concrete mixers are on the same streets, because crushed limestone is what goes into the drum. That is a read off the mine record, not a preference of ours. We buy all of them.

Most of the reasons people sell aren’t happy ones, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone by the end of the week. That’s what we’re here for.

Those loads all run under one set of numbers, and one of its exceptions names the mixer directly. Illinois statute 625 ILCS 5/15-111 sets 80,000 pounds gross for five or more axles, 20,000 pounds on a single axle and 34,000 pounds on a tandem, with no axle inside that tandem over 20,000 pounds, and a formula for consecutive axle groups that varies with spacing.

Local authorities and cities over 50,000 people may set their own weight limits by ordinance, but the same statute stops them exceeding the state maximums. So an Illinois local limit can only ever be lower than the state figure, never higher — which is something to check before you plan a route on the state number alone.

The exceptions the section names are garbage trucks, concrete mixers, tow trucks, emergency vehicles and vehicles using alternative fuels. It is the one place in the Illinois weight statute where what a truck is, or what it burns, changes a legal limit.

That section carries no seasonal frost provisions and no harvest or agricultural exemptions. That is scoped to that section of the statute and is not a claim that Illinois has no seasonal restriction anywhere, which we did not check.
