Quality Lime Company runs a surface limestone operation of its own name here, and the federal mine register records 17 employees at it. The name records a lime business rather than a stone one, which is a distinction with a plant behind it: lime is burnt in a kiln, crushed stone is not.

The federal directory of lime plants for 2022 does not list an Illinois plant at this town. That is consistent with a quarry and processing operation feeding the lime chain rather than running a kiln of its own — but it was not established, and we are not going to write a kiln onto this page on the strength of a company name.

That chain matters here because of where the product ends up. Ground limestone in this part of the state is spread on farmland, and it is carried by floater and spreader trucks — high-clearance flotation-tyred machines that go into a field rather than onto a jobsite. They are not dump trucks with a different body; they are a separate vehicle with a separate service life.

So the fleet around a lime operation is broader than the fleet around an ordinary aggregate pit. The 35-mile ring holds 23 records and 12 of them are over in Indiana, with Lawrence Gravel 6.63 miles off in this county and a flour mill at 16.16 miles in Edgar County. Farm ground, state line and lime together make for a mixed set of iron.

So dump trucks and spreader trucks are both the ordinary shape around Quality Lime Company and its seventeen people, with farm trucks and flatbeds across the rest of a Clark County ring 35 miles wide. That is a read off the mine register, not a preference of ours. We buy all of them.

Most of the reasons people sell aren’t happy ones, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone. That’s what we’re here for.

Those loads all run under one set of numbers. Illinois statute 625 ILCS 5/15-111 sets 80,000 pounds gross for five or more axles, 20,000 pounds on a single axle and 34,000 pounds on a tandem, with no axle inside that tandem over 20,000 pounds, and a formula for consecutive axle groups that varies with spacing.

Local authorities and cities over 50,000 people may set their own weight limits by ordinance, but the same statute stops them exceeding the state maximums. So an Illinois local limit can only ever be lower than the state figure, never higher — which is worth checking before you plan a route on the state number alone.
