We buy trucks in Oglesby

The Vermilion Plant, recorded as MC47 and operated by RiverStone Group, records 6 employees on the federal mine register. On its own that is a small gate — one scale house, a handful of trucks in and out.

It is not on its own. La Salle County carries 13 rows in this dataset: three crushed-stone quarries, four industrial-mineral operations, a cement plant, two rail yards, a flour mill, a liquid bulk terminal and a military installation. Eight of those thirteen report an employee count, and between them they record 341 people — more than any other Illinois county in this data records. A six-person plant sits inside a working district rather than at the end of a dead road.

The nearest faces are close and they are not all the same rock. The Amrize Utica Stone Plant is 4.62 miles north. The LaSalle Quarry and Mill, run by the Illinois Cement Company, is 5.89 miles north-west. Northern White Sand is 6.33 miles north-east, and the Troy Grove Plant and Manley Bros. operations are 14.6 miles north — that is silica sand country, a different product and a different customer from crushed limestone.

RiverStone Group works both ends of it: the same operator’s Troy Grove Stone Quarry, recorded as MC46, lies 10.81 miles north. Two plants under one operator eleven miles apart is shuttle work, not line-haul. Add the OTTAWA rail yard 9.13 miles north-east and the Illinois Valley Port 11.03 miles west and you have road, rail and barge inside a twelve-mile circle.

That mix is the thing worth knowing about a truck bought here. Sand is abrasive and limestone is heavy, and a truck that has done both has taken two different kinds of punishment.

So dump trucks, aggregate haulers and sand haulers are the local shape, with the Vermilion Plant on one side and the Illinois Cement Company and Northern White Sand within seven miles on the other. That is a fact about La Salle County, not a preference of ours. We buy all of them.

Day cabs, flatbeds, box trucks, work trucks and pickups are used everywhere and are just as welcome, on exactly the same terms.

Most of the reasons people sell aren’t happy ones, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone by the end of the week. That’s what we’re here for.

Those loads all run under one set of numbers. Illinois statute 625 ILCS 5/15-111 sets 80,000 pounds gross for five or more axles, 20,000 pounds on a single axle and 34,000 pounds on a tandem, with no axle inside that tandem over 20,000 pounds, and a formula for consecutive axle groups that varies with spacing.

Local authorities and cities over 50,000 people may set their own weight limits by ordinance, but the same statute stops them exceeding the state maximums. So an Illinois local limit can only ever be lower than the state figure, never higher — which is worth knowing before you plan a route on the state number alone.

That section carries no seasonal frost provisions and no harvest or agricultural exemptions. That is scoped to that section of the statute and is not a claim that Illinois has no seasonal restriction anywhere, which we did not check.

One more number from the same code decides whether a title gets branded. Under 625 ILCS 5/3-117.1(b)(1) a vehicle is salvage once an insurance company pays a total loss claim on it, with two carve-outs: hail damage alone, where it does not affect operational safety, and any vehicle nine model years of age or older, which the registered owner may keep by agreement with the insurer. That second one is a right to ask rather than something the law does on its own. Subsection (b)(1.1) sets a separate test for self-insured companies — salvage where the repair cost, labour included, would come to more than 70% of what the vehicle was worth undamaged.
