It is not a small thing to set aside. The Grand Rivers Quarry works 135 people for Vulcan Construction Materials and the state carries it as source AGP000301 at Gilbertsville, on US 62 in Livingston County.

The Geological Survey describes it as one of the largest crushed stone quarries in the United States. That is attributed rather than measured — no supporting tonnage figure was found and none is asserted here. A sand and gravel dredge under Pine Bluff Materials sits with it.

All of which is a fact about western Kentucky. If you are reading this page because you are in Rockcastle County, none of it describes your roads, your bridges or the work your truck did, and this page would rather say so than let a heading imply otherwise.

None of that confusion reaches the statute, which applies by what is in the body and which road the wheels are on.

Kentucky gives a ten per cent tolerance on its axle weight provisions to vehicles engaged exclusively in hauling crushed stone, fill dirt and rock, soil, bulk sand, coal, phosphate muck, asphalt, concrete, solid waste, tankage or animal residues, livestock, feed for livestock or poultry, and agricultural products — except on the interstate system. Stone qualifies, and so do grain, feed and livestock. In this county the interstate runs close enough that the exception is a live consideration on the fast road out.

The larger coal-haul figure belongs to a separate certified network — 90,000 lb on one steering axle plus two tandem axles with a five per cent tolerance — and that certified road list was not read for this work.

Kentucky’s posted-bridge list was not located for this work either, and no bridge measurement exists for any row genuinely attached to this town, so no posting is asserted on any road near here.
