Washington County
Crushed stone, dimension granite, and three very small payrolls
Three quarry rows are attached to Whitehall and none of them is a big operation. Braen Stone of Whitehall is a crushed-stone pit MSHA records with 2 employees, 4.27 miles from the Census centroid of the village, joining NYSDOT’s approved source register 0.36 miles away as an aggregate source, fine.
The other two work dimension granite. Adirondack Natural Stone reports 3 employees and North Quarry reports 2, and the operator strings on those two rows differ by a suffix while naming what is evidently the same firm. We are not going to pretend that is two companies.
One rail row is attached here as well, 1.64 miles out under the Clarendon & Pittsford Railroad, and attached by nearest-centroid fallback rather than containment.
The road out of it
So the tightest crossing in this lane sits on those roads
Those small pits work the hardest road network on this list. The ten-mile circle around the crushed-stone pit spans a state line: the 2025 National Bridge Inventory records 56 structures inside it, 52 from New York and 4 from Vermont, so the count is computed from every state file with structures in the radius.
Four are coded posted for load and four are coded below legal loads, three of them county-maintained, with the nearest 3.74 miles away. The lowest operating rating is 2.7 tonnes, which nothing commercial crosses. The one that binds a working truck is 13.6 tonnes, about 15.0 US tons, and over the empty weight of a tandem dump it admits roughly 2.6 tonnes of stone.
2.6 tonnes is the tightest figure anywhere in this lane. A truck that has spent its life here has been running a long way short of a legal load, and that is a fact about the road rather than about the truck. It is also why three of the four restrictions being county-maintained matters: a county posting is at least one office you can name.

New York weight law
And a permit does nothing about a 13.6-tonne rating
Which is the distinction to hold on to here more than anywhere.
Vehicle and Traffic Law § 385 sets a maximum of 80,000 lb or less depending on axle spacing. Above legal weight the owner obtains a divisible load overweight permit from NYSDOT, written commodity-neutral, and stone is a divisible load by definition. Beneath it the state allows 22,400 lb on a single axle and 36,000 lb on two consecutive axles under eight feet, against federal figures of 20,000 lb and 34,000 lb.
A permit raises what the state will let you carry. It does not raise a bridge rating by an ounce, and out here the bridge answers first every time.

New York paperwork
We need a title — unless it never had one
Beyond the roads, the paperwork comes down to that one sentence.
Everything after it is a fix rather than a category. A lost title has a counter replacement; where none exists there is a bonded route. New York reaches its salvage brand by four separate routes, and its seventy-five per cent repair-cost test applies only to a vehicle eight model years old or newer, so on an older truck it does not arise. Once applied the brand is permanent, and the DMV must examine a rebuilt vehicle for stolen parts before it can be registered or titled.

What we buy around Whitehall
Those rules cover all of it, and all of it is iron we buy. Dump trucks and aggregate haulers off the crushed-stone pit. Flatbeds off the dimension-granite end, where Adirondack Natural Stone works. Farm trucks, day cabs, service bodies, and the work trucks and pickups that go out with a crew.
Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them, anywhere in Washington County and over into Vermont if that is where it stands.
We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.
Straight answers
The questions we get asked in Whitehall
- Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
- The engine is out of it. Is that different?Yes, and that is the line. A tired engine is fine; an engine that has been pulled out and sold means we can’t buy the truck.
- What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement; where none exists there’s a bonded route.
- My truck has never carried a full load. Does that count against it?No. Round here the binding crossing is 13.6 tonnes and admits about 2.6 tonnes of stone, so part loads are the normal working life of a Washington County truck — the pit itself is 4.27 miles out of the village and the road decided that, not the truck.
- Getting it out looks awkward. Then leave that to us. We arrange the tow, and an empty truck on a trailer is a different problem from a loaded one on the posted bridge 3.74 miles out.
Why people call
Beyond a truck that has finished its seasons, the reasons are personal ones. Retiring off a small operation — 2 employees at the pit 4.27 miles out is the scale of a lot of what works here, and Adirondack Natural Stone is not much bigger. A business that changed shape. A medical that went the wrong way.
Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone by the end of the week. That’s what we’re here for, anywhere in Washington County.
