Alleghany County

Four people, a large company, and a quarry the register cannot find

The node attached to this place is the Rich Patch quarry, worked for crushed stone by Martin Marietta Materials with four people on the federal register, its coordinate 2.17 miles from the centroid.

Four is a very small crew for a very large operator. Against the 170 Virginia rows that state a headcount at all it sits well down the list, where the median is eleven — a reminder that a national name on a row says nothing about the size of the hole in the ground beneath it.

No entry for it could be located in the state aggregate approved list either. That is an absence in a name-only register with no coordinates, not a finding that the quarry is unapproved, and we are not going to convert a failed lookup into a claim about a company’s standing.

The roads out

A quiet network with its restrictions sensibly far away

Those four people load onto a circle that mostly leaves them alone. Within ten miles the inventory records 154 structures; five are coded posted for load and four are rated below legal loads, 2.6% of them.

The nearest of the four sits 5.16 miles out, far enough that it is a route decision rather than a daily obstacle. Its rating is 14.5 metric tonnes, about 16.0 US tons, admitting roughly 3.5 tonnes of stone over the 11.0 an empty tandem already weighs.

That is a modest payload past the binding crossing but only four crossings to worry about in a hundred and fifty-four, none of them at the gate. This is a network you plan around occasionally, which is a different working life from the coalfield pages in this state where the restrictions start at the pit entrance.

Virginia paperwork

Three salvage tests in one chapter, and a rebuilt test that runs inside out

Beyond the roads, the title regime follows the truck rather than the route, and Virginia writes it unusually. Va. Code § 46.2-1600 sets three salvage thresholds where most states set one. A late model vehicle is salvage where estimated repair would exceed its actual cash value less its current salvage value. A recovered stolen vehicle acquired by an insurer is salvage above seventy-five per cent of actual cash value. A vehicle is nonrepairable above ninety per cent of its value before the damage.

Subtracting the salvage value makes the base smaller, so that first test is easier to trip rather than harder — the opposite of what comparing the bare percentages suggests. The rebuilt test then runs inside out: it measures the repair cost excluding damage to the engine, transmission or drive axle assembly, the exact inverse of Oklahoma, which counts only the suspension, motor, transmission, frame and structural components.

Late model is the current model year and the five preceding, or any vehicle whose value before the damage met the floor the section names, so an older truck outside that limb sits outside the salvage regime altogether. The repair figure also excludes towing, storage, a temporary replacement and diminished-value compensation — storage and diminished value being two items no other state on file names.

Weight is set at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127 — 20,000 lb on a single axle, 34,000 lb on a tandem and 80,000 lb gross — and the interstate limits are the same as the highway limits, so there is no inversion here to catch a driver out at the ramp.

What we buy here

The offer does not sort by truck type

Those rules apply to whatever you drive, and the offer does not sort by type either. Tandems and tri-axles off the stone work that Alleghany County runs on, including whatever loads 2.17 miles out at the Rich Patch quarry. Day cabs and road tractors on the runs down the valley. Flatbeds, box trucks, straight trucks and rollbacks out of the trades, plus service bodies and the crew pickups that go with them.

Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them.

Getting it to us is the part that flexes. We can come to you and drive it away, or come and tow it; we can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody visiting at all, and you are welcome to bring it here instead.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in Low Moor

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • It was a small operation. Does a big-name quarry matter to the offer? Not at all, and the record here makes the point for us — four people on the books under one of the largest names in the trade. We buy the truck, not the letterhead behind it.
  • Do you come out to Alleghany County? We do. We can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow if that suits you better — the drive is our problem either way. With the nearest restricted crossing 5.16 miles out there is nothing awkward about getting a lowloader in.
  • How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.
  • What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement; where none exists there is a bonded route.

Why people call

None of those questions is why the phone rings. Retiring. A medical that went the wrong way. A hauling contract that finished. A tandem standing through an Alleghany County winter 2.17 miles from the Rich Patch gate, insurance going out on something that is not turning a wheel.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone. That’s what we’re here for.

Virginia title rules read from the Code of Virginia in August 2026 — verify with Virginia DMV before acting on them. Salvage, nonrepairable and rebuilt definitions at Va. Code § 46.2-1600; weight limits at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127. Bridge figures come from the FHWA National Bridge Inventory 2025 files and are read on item 70 rather than item 41, because the two agree on only 68% of this state’s posted structures. A commercial floor is a MINIMUM inside a ten-mile circle: at 64.1% of the nodes measured in this work a tighter crossing lies between ten miles and twenty, so read it as an upper bound. NO ENTRY for this node could be located in the state aggregate approved list. That is recorded as an absence in a name-only register with no coordinates and is NOT a finding that the quarry is unapproved. Headcounts are as reported to the federal mine regulator; 179 of the 349 Virginia rows in this work state none, and an absent figure is not a zero. Whether Virginia has any seasonal or frost provision was not determined for this node’s research batch and none is stated here. Information, not legal advice.
