One dimension-stone registration sits under this village and it is the largest single operation in this lane by a wide margin: 125 employees on the MSHA register, working dimension limestone under Buechel Stone Corp. For comparison, most quarry rows in this state carry between two and twenty.

It is registered as Chilton Quarry, and Chilton is a different place with quarries of its own. That is the standard failure of this layer rather than an oddity: across this trade the company and facility names point at towns the rows do not assign them to. A name, a city string and a coordinate are three different facts, and none of them constrains the other two.

That name confusion makes the employment figure the more reliable statement of the two, and Buechel Stone Corp reports a large one. A hundred and twenty-five people is a working industrial site, not a farm-edge pit, and it sits on the Niagara Escarpment dolomite that runs through this part of the state as a building and landscape stone.

What it does not tell you is where the trucks go. Landscape stone and architectural cut stone are different customers — yards, garden centres and contractors on one side, fabricators on the other — and stone ships both palletised and in bulk. Nothing we read settles the split for this operation, so we are not going to invent one.

One thing the calendar settles for it either way, and it is not in this trade’s favour. Under a frozen road declaration a legally licensed vehicle may run to 98,000 lb without a permit, up from the ordinary 80,000 lb, normally from late December to late February or early March.

Eligibility is written by cargo and it is short: the § 348.175 list is abrasives or salt for highway winter maintenance, and peeled or unpeeled forest products cut crosswise, which does not include wood chips. Stone and sand are not on it. Travel is not allowed on state highways carrying posted weight restrictions, and no local road is authorised unless the local highway authority declares its own — so the allowance you read about in December may not reach the road outside your gate.

None of that reaches the paperwork, which is the short part. That is the rule, and everything after it is a fix rather than a category. A lost title has a counter replacement. Where none exists there is a bonded route. Neither one stops a sale.

The salvage definition here is narrower than most people assume. Wis. Stat. § 340.01(55g) reaches a vehicle less than 7 years old damaged so that the estimated or actual cost of repairing it, whichever is greater, exceeds 70 percent of its fair market value, and it excludes a hail-damaged vehicle unless it is repaired with a replacement part. Most of what we buy is well past seven years old, and for those trucks the definition does not reach them at all, whatever a repair would have cost.

None of that changes what we are interested in. Flatbeds off the palletised and cut stone out of Buechel Stone Corp here on the Niagara Escarpment. Dump trucks and aggregate haulers off the crushed by-product. Road tractors and day cabs on the runs south. Work trucks and pickups off crews. Whatever you drive, the offer does not change.
