Frequently Asked Questions
When is Form 2290 due?
By the last day of the month following the month the vehicle was first used on public highways during the period. For a truck first used in July 2026, that is August 31, 2026.
What is taxable gross weight?
For a vehicle other than a bus, it is the actual unloaded weight of the vehicle fully equipped for service, plus the actual unloaded weight of any trailers or semitrailers customarily used with it, plus the weight of the maximum load customarily carried.
Does a truck under 55,000 pounds owe the tax?
No. Vehicles with a taxable gross weight below 55,000 pounds are not subject to the tax and are not required to file Form 2290.
