What This Lookup Shows

It lists the safety recall campaigns NHTSA has issued for the truck’s model year, make and model: the campaign number, the component, NHTSA’s summary, the remedy and the date. A VIN is decoded to its year, make and model first, using NHTSA’s own VIN decoder.

A campaign listed here applies to that model. Whether one particular truck has already had the repair is a separate question, and NHTSA answers it on its own VIN search, which shows whether a specific vehicle needs to be repaired as part of a recall.

What NHTSA’s VIN Search Will Not Show

NHTSA lists what its VIN search leaves out: a safety recall that has already been repaired, some recently announced recalls for which not all VINs have been identified yet, safety recalls more than 15 years old, recalls by small vehicle manufacturers, and manufacturer customer service or other non-safety campaigns.

NHTSA adds VINs to recent recalls continuously, so a truck with no result today can show one later.
