Stone pits south and west of Florence
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Tuscumbia Quarry, a crushed-stone operation, 6.9 miles south of Florence, and Pride Quarry 9.9 miles to the south-west. A dump truck or tractor that runs stone out of either pit is often parked on site or at a yard nearby, so tell us which quarry gate it sits behind and who can let us in.
Farther out, Cherokee Quarry, an industrial-mineral mine, is 21.2 miles west, and Rockwood Mine, a dimension-stone quarry, is 22.6 miles south, both on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list. If the truck is parked on the mine lot, that is where we collect it, and a seller living in Florence can stay home.
The Sheffield terminal and rail yard
Just 6.3 miles south-west of town, the Energy Information Administration places a petroleum product terminal at Sheffield. Tank trucks and the tractors that pull fuel trailers from it are trucks we buy; have the registration and any terminal or hazmat inspection records together before you call.
A rail yard at Sheffield, 8.5 miles south, appears in the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. If your day cab shuttles loads to and from that yard, send photos of the cab, frame and fifth wheel along with the VIN, and say where it is parked between runs.
General freight, machinery, farm supplies and grain
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 326 active carriers here: 131 haul general freight, 72 move machinery and large objects, 57 carry farm supplies and 54 haul grain, feed and hay. Whichever of those your truck has done, tell us the work up front so our questions fit the equipment, whether it is a flatbed tractor, a grain hopper rig or a box truck.
Of those 326 carriers, 230 run intrastate and 96 cross state lines, and 219 are private fleets hauling their own goods, according to the same FMCSA census. A private fleet selling a truck should have the title in the company’s name and someone authorised to sign it; an owner-operator needs the title in hand and the current registration.
The FMCSA census also records 659 drivers working within 100 miles and 674 working beyond it, and a median of 20,000 miles a truck across the 66 carriers that reported mileage. A truck parked at a customer’s site out of state can be collected there, so give us that address rather than bringing it home first.
Big fleets, recent model years and new starts
The three biggest fleets based around Florence run 441, 91 and 67 power units, with 130, 144 and 56 drivers, by FMCSA’s carrier census. A fleet retiring several units at once can list them together with VINs and locations, and we plan one collection around the lot.
Across 179 Florence-area trucks stopped for roadside checks from September 2024 to August 2026, the median model year in FMCSA’s inspection records is 2020, and 22.9 percent of them date back ten years or more. Whatever the model year, the title, the registration and clear photos of the truck are what we ask for first.
New registrations keep arriving: FMCSA’s census logged 19 new carriers in 2025 and 15 in 2024. A carrier that started recently and is selling a unit should have the title transfer from its own purchase finished before the sale.
Plant jobs, contractors and corn and cotton farms
Manufacturing accounts for 2,579 of the 24,540 jobs counted here in 2023, or 10.5 percent, by the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts, alongside 996 construction jobs and 882 in wholesale trade. Box trucks and tractors that serve plants and distributors often sit at a loading dock between runs; tell us whose dock it is so the pickup can be arranged with them.
Lauderdale County’s 56 construction establishments, as County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau tallies them, keep dump trucks and flatbeds on local job sites. If your dump truck, flatbed or water truck is parked on a job site, give us the site address and the name of whoever controls the gate.
Lauderdale County has 1,130 farms, with corn, soybeans and cotton at the top, in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. A grain truck or farm tractor-trailer parked by a field or barn can be collected right there; send directions to the farm along with the title and photos.
