Norris yard, Boyles yard and the bulk terminal
Norris, the rail yard closest to Irondale, lies just 2 miles toward Birmingham to the north-west on the North American Rail Network that the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics maintain. A tractor that shuttles loads to and from Norris is often parked within sight of the tracks between runs, so give us the street address of that lot and the name of whoever holds the gate key.
Boyles, a second rail yard, lies 7.6 miles west of town on the same North American Rail Network listing, and Bulk Transport CO, a liquid bulk terminal, is 7.6 miles west as well according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. If your tractor pulled tank trailers out of that terminal, say whether the trailer goes with it, and send a photo of each VIN plate so we can match them to the title.
Cement, crushed stone and mineral sites east and north-west
Mine Safety and Health Administration records put the Leeds Plant, a cement plant, 6.5 miles east of Irondale and the Jordan Plant, an industrial-mineral mine, 8.3 miles east. Dump trucks, mixers and tractors with end-dump trailers are the usual equipment on runs like these; tell us which body is mounted and whether it stays on the chassis for the sale.
To the north-west, the Dolcito Quarry is a crushed-stone operation 6.8 miles out, per the Mine Safety and Health Administration. A truck still sitting on a quarry lot can be collected there; we only need the site contact’s name and phone so the pickup is cleared with the operator before anyone arrives.
General freight, moving vans and refuse routes
Half of the 72 active Irondale motor carriers on FMCSA’s carrier census, 36 outfits, put general freight on their cargo list. Box trucks, day cabs and straight trucks from that work are the bulk of what we expect to hear about here, so lead with the body type and the VIN when you first get in touch.
Household goods appear on the cargo lists of 11 carriers in the same FMCSA census, machinery and large objects on 8, and garbage, refuse and trash on 5. Moving vans, lowboy tractors and roll-off or rear-loader refuse trucks each need their body described in the photos, from both sides and from behind.
Of those 72 carriers, FMCSA’s census shows 27 operating interstate, 45 intrastate only, and 44 running private fleets that haul their own goods. For a private-fleet truck owned by a business, the title is usually in the company’s name, so have the person who can sign for the company available when we collect it.
Small outfits beside fleets of over a hundred tractors
At the top end, FMCSA’s carrier census shows one Irondale fleet with 127 power units and 132 drivers, another with 107 units and 158 drivers, and a third with 71 of each. If you are retiring several units at once from an operation of that size, send a list with each VIN, unit number and where each one is parked, and we can work through them together.
New entrants keep arriving too: FMCSA’s census records 7 new carriers registered in Irondale in 2025 and 3 in 2024. An owner-operator who started recently and is now selling should have the title and the current registration in hand, along with any lien release if the truck was financed.
Twenty local carriers file annual mileage with FMCSA, and the middle figure among them is 25,000 miles for each truck they run around the Birmingham side of Jefferson County. Photograph the odometer and the engine-hour reading clearly so the numbers on file match the dash.
What Alabama roadside inspectors recorded
Alabama inspectors stopped 596 trucks belonging to Irondale-based carriers from late August 2024 to late August 2026, and FMCSA roadside inspection records give 2020 as the middle model year of that group. Older or newer, we want the model year and the engine make in your first message.
Just 14.6 percent of those 596 Irondale trucks carried a model year a decade or more back, per the same FMCSA roadside inspection records. Whatever the year, a copy of the latest annual inspection report and any service records you kept should travel with the truck.
Contractors, wholesalers and Jefferson County cattle farms
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023 tally 9,507 jobs in Irondale, including 1,108 in construction, 915 in wholesale trade, 746 in transportation and warehousing, and 506 in manufacturing. Contractors selling a dump truck, flatbed or service body truck can reach us the same way a carrier would: VIN, photos and where the truck sits.
The area around Irondale holds 89 construction firms but only 7 warehousing ones, going by the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. A truck that spends its days at a job site rather than a yard can be picked up there, provided someone can show us which unit it is.
Jefferson County had 398 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with cattle, cut Christmas trees and short-term woody crops at the top. A farm truck, cattle hauler or flatbed kept in a barn outside Irondale is collected where it is parked; send directions if the gate is off a county road.
The questions we get asked in Irondale
- The tractor sits on a lot beside Norris yard. Can it stay on the Norris lot for pickup?Norris sits 2 miles north-west of Irondale on the North American Rail Network, and we come to the truck there. Name the lot’s owner and a phone number for them, and the collection is booked around their hours.
- I haul from the Leeds cement plant. Can you take the truck with the body still mounted? The Leeds Plant, 6.5 miles east of town in Mine Safety and Health Administration records, is served by mixers and dump bodies, and we take the truck with its body on. Photograph the body and the chassis plate so both appear in what you send.
- We haul our own goods with company trucks out of Irondale. Which of us signs over a company-titled Irondale truck?Irondale’s 44 private fleets in FMCSA’s carrier census mostly title trucks in the business name, so the person authorised to sign for the business signs the title. Have that person, or their written authorisation, ready on collection day.
- Can you collect a refuse truck from a Jefferson County site?Garbage, refuse and trash hauling shows up on 5 Irondale carriers’ cargo lists in FMCSA’s census, and those trucks are on our list too. Send photos of the packer body, the cab and the VIN plate along with the site address.
