Sand, gravel and clay toward Phenix City
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Phenix City Plant II, a sand and gravel operation, 8.7 miles south-east of Smiths Station, and the Phenix City Mine 9.7 miles out on the same heading. A dump truck or end-dump tractor that hauls aggregate from those two sites is usually parked at a pit gate or in a yard down that way, so tell us which one and who holds the key when you get in touch.
Boral Clay Pits, an industrial-mineral mine about 10.3 miles south-east on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s roll, puts a third loading point in that corridor. Before we collect a clay hauler from there, have the title in hand and the registration card from the cab, and send photos of the bed, the hoist and the tag along with the VIN.
Opelika and Auburn side
Quarries and a propane terminal to the west
To the west, Auburn Quarry, a crushed-stone site, lies 21.6 miles away according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration, while Shady Grove Quarry sits 16 miles north-west. If your rock truck runs between Smiths Station and either quarry, give us the parking address on the side of the county where it actually sleeps at night, not your home address.
The Energy Information Administration places the Opelika Propane Terminal 16.2 miles west of town. Bobtails and tank tractors that load there carry their own paperwork, so gather the tank inspection certificates and any hazmat registration you hold and send copies with your first photos.
The trucking firms registered in Smiths Station
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 71 active carriers in Smiths Station; 45 of them run interstate, 26 stay intrastate, and 48 are private fleets hauling their own goods. A private-fleet truck is often titled to the business rather than a person, so have the officer who can sign for the company ready when we arrange the paperwork.
General freight is the cargo listed by 35 of those carriers in the FMCSA census, with machinery and large objects at 18, motor vehicles at 14 and utility work at 11. Lowboys, car haulers and bucket or line trucks therefore all come out of this town, and each one should go to sale with its trailer or body titles sorted alongside the tractor.
One fleet here operates 54 power units with 46 drivers, the next 21 units, and a third 11, per the federal carrier census. New registrations added 8 carriers in 2024 and 7 in 2025 according to FMCSA, so an owner-operator who started recently may still be finishing a loan; bring the lienholder’s name and contact so the release can be requested.
What inspectors and the census show about local trucks
FMCSA roadside inspection records cover 63 Smiths Station trucks pulled over from October 2024 to August 2026; their median build is a 2018, and 42.9 percent were ten or more model years old at the stop. Whatever the year of yours, the VIN tells us the build details, so put it first in your message.
For the 29 carriers that report mileage in the FMCSA census, the median truck covers 14,500 miles a year. Read the odometer off the dash, photograph it, and include the reading when you write to us, so the figure we work from is the one on your truck.
Jobs and farmland
Construction jobs, farms and short-haul drivers
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 829 jobs in Smiths Station in 2023, 51 of them in construction, and County Business Patterns lists 24 construction establishments. Contractors here keep dump trucks and flatbeds close to home, so a truck parked behind a shop or on a job site is fine for collection as long as someone can open the gate.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture records 357 farms in Lee County, led by cattle, soybeans and hemp. A livestock hauler or grain truck kept on a farm lane can be picked up where it stands; send a photo of the access road so the driver knows what to bring.
By rail
Mahrt yard and the longer runs
The North American Rail Network shows the Mahrt rail yard 24.6 miles south of Smiths Station. Drayage tractors that shuttle to that yard can be collected there or at your lot; send whichever address is easier to reach and a phone number for whoever is on site.
FMCSA registrations here list 151 drivers working within 100 miles and 62 going further. If your truck runs the longer routes and is away when you decide to sell, tell us where it will be parked next and we will meet it there.

Will you pick it up there instead of in town?Phenix City Plant II is 8.7 miles south-east on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from a site like that directly.
