Fifty small carriers, most of them staying in Alabama
Of the 50 Southside motor carriers active in FMCSA’s carrier census, an in-state-only registration covers 42, leaving 8 cleared to cross the Alabama line. If your truck has spent its life on Etowah County and Alabama routes, its registration and title will be Alabama paperwork, so have both in hand before we schedule a collection.
Twenty-three of those 50 carriers run private fleets, according to the same FMCSA census, meaning they haul their own goods rather than for hire. A contractor or farm selling a tractor or dump truck it owns outright only needs the title in the business’s name and someone authorised to sign it.
Fleets here are small: the three biggest in FMCSA’s records run 5, 4 and 3 power units. When an owner-operator with one or two trucks sells to us, the person on the title is usually the person we talk to, which keeps the sale to one phone call and one signature.
Lumber, machinery and coil loads out of Southside
Of Southside’s carriers, 22 list general freight, 15 list logs, poles, beams and lumber, and 13 list machinery and large objects, by FMCSA’s carrier census. A log truck, a lowboy tractor or a box truck all fit what we collect; tell us the body type and the trailer setup when you first get in touch.
Eight local carriers haul metal sheets, coils and rolls in the FMCSA census. Flatbed tractors that have pulled coil loads often carry chains, binders and coil racks; list what stays with the truck and send photos of the deck so we know exactly what we are collecting.
Of those carriers, 5 reported mileage to FMCSA, with a median of 35,000 miles per truck a year. Read the odometer and note the VIN from the door jamb before you contact us, since every question we ask follows from those two.
Quarries and a cement plant around the Coosa
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Glencoe Quarry, a crushed-stone operation, 6.7 miles north-east of Southside, and the Coosa Plant sand and gravel operation 14.6 miles in the same direction. Dump trucks and tri-axles that have worked these pits can stay parked at the yard; give us the gate contact and we arrange collection on site.
To the south-west, the National Cement Company plant and the Ragland industrial-mineral mine both sit 12.8 miles out, with the Ashville Quarry at Highways 26 and 33 about 13.1 miles west, per MSHA records. If your mixer or bulk tractor is still on one of those properties, tell us whose ground it is on so we can clear access with them first.
Tank work at RJ Corman, rail at Alabama City
RJ Corman’s liquid bulk terminal, 7.1 miles north-east of town, appears in the Bureau of Transportation Statistics listings. Tank tractors and trailers that have served a bulk site like that can be sold with their wash and inspection records; if you kept them, put them in the folder with the title.
On the North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the Alabama City rail yard lies 9.2 miles north. A day cab that has shuttled to and from that yard can be collected wherever it is parked around Southside; send the street address and a photo of where it sits.
Six Southside bridges and one low Coosa crossing
The National Bridge Inventory records 6 bridges in Southside, none of them load-posted and one with less than 14 feet of clearance. The National Bridge Inventory gives that one, carrying AL 77 over the Coosa River, 13 feet 10 inches, so if your truck has a tall box, a mounted crane or a high load on it, mention its height and we route the pickup around that crossing.
With no posted weight limits among those six structures in the federal bridge inventory, a loaded or empty tractor can generally leave town by the usual roads. Let us know whether the truck will have a trailer attached on collection day so we bring the right equipment.
Builders in town, cattle and cotton out in Etowah
In 2023 the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 987 jobs in Southside, 86 of them in construction, an 8.7 percent share. Building contractors with an office here number 16, in the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns tally. Contractors retiring a dump truck or flatbed can sell it as a business asset; bring the company title and a signer from the firm.
Etowah County held 725 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with cattle, corn and cotton as the leading products. A livestock hauler, grain truck or cotton-module tractor kept on a farm outside town is a truck we come out to; give us directions to the barn or field gate rather than a mailing address.
Local drivers, local trucks
Within a 100-mile radius of home, FMCSA’s carrier census places 85 of Southside’s drivers, with 26 more taking loads past that ring. A truck that runs regional loads is often home every night, so it is usually easiest for us to collect it from the driveway or shop where it parks.
Seven Southside outfits took out new FMCSA carrier registrations in 2024, and one more followed in 2025. If you started your authority recently and are now selling the truck, keep your USDOT number and the bill of sale from when you bought it with the title, since those settle who owns it.
The questions we get asked in Southside
- Our tri-axle never left the Glencoe Quarry pit; does it need moving before you pick it up?Glencoe Quarry is 6.7 miles north-east of Southside in MSHA’s records, and we collect trucks at quarry yards like it. Give us the site contact who can open the gate and confirm where the truck is parked.
- Is the low bridge over the Coosa a problem for a tall truck? The National Bridge Inventory lists that crossing at 13 feet 10 inches, the one Southside bridge under 14 feet. Tell us your truck’s height and we plan a route that avoids it.
- Would you take an in-state-only log truck that hauls timber around Etowah County?Fifteen Southside carriers list logs, poles, beams and lumber in FMCSA’s census, and intrastate log trucks are part of what we collect. Have the Alabama title and registration ready, plus photos of the bunks and loader if fitted.
- The grain truck sits behind a barn on our cattle place past Southside; is that reachable for you?USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 725 farms in Etowah County, and we pick up from farm yards across it. Send directions to the gate and a photo showing how the truck can be reached.
