Quarry roads south
Quarries and the cement plant below Steele
Head south out of Steele and the Mine Safety and Health Administration places the Ashville Quarry at Hwy 26 and Hwy 33 about 8.6 miles off, with the Ashville Rock Quarry 9.4 miles to the south-west. A dump truck or tractor that has shuttled stone from either site can be collected at the shop, the quarry lot or your driveway; give us the exact spot and who holds the keys.
The NATIONAL CEMENT COMPANY plant and the RAGLAND industrial-mineral mine both sit 13.8 miles south of town on Mine Safety and Health Administration listings. Bulk trailers and mixers tied to that corner of the county are trucks we take; send the VIN, a photo of the door plate and a few shots of the whole rig from each side.
Further out, MSHA lists the GLENCOE QUARRY 14.5 miles east, the Gargus Borrow Pit 14.2 miles west and the TREMENDOUS PIT dimension-stone quarry the same distance north-west. Whichever of those pits your truck hauled from, the title in your name is the first thing we ask to see.
Log and pole haulers
Lumber, farm supply and machinery loads
Logs, poles, beams and lumber top the cargo lines for Steele, claimed by 14 of the 39 active carriers that FMCSA’s carrier census lists in town. Log trucks, knuckle-boom rigs and pole trailers from around town are welcome; note the loader or crane model in your message so the photos make sense to us.
Farm supplies come next with 12 carriers in FMCSA’s census, ahead of general freight at 10 and machinery or large objects at 9. If your Steele outfit pulled a lowboy or a step-deck for equipment moves, list the trailer separately from the tractor so each one gets its own title check.
Only five of those carriers run interstate, while 34 stay inside Alabama, and 25 are private fleets hauling their own goods, according to FMCSA’s carrier census. A farm or sawmill truck that never left the state still sells to us the same way: the Alabama title, a registration card and the keys.
Small yards and short hauls around town
The three largest Steele fleets on FMCSA’s census run eight, six and three power units, each with a matching driver count. An owner selling one truck out of a yard that size can hand us the VIN and title for that unit alone and keep the rest working.
Seven local carriers report mileage in FMCSA’s census, and their median is 27,300 miles per truck per year. Have the current odometer reading ready when you call; it is a neutral figure we record next to the VIN.
Inside a hundred-mile radius is where 37 Steele carriers keep their drivers, while 29 also send them farther, per FMCSA’s census. If your truck is out on a run or parked at a customer’s site, tell us the town it is in and we arrange collection there.
North-east to the yard
Clear bridges and the yard at ALABAMA CITY
Not one of the sixteen structures the National Bridge Inventory records around Steele is load-posted, and none has clearance below fourteen feet. A loaded lowboy or a tall dump body can reach a pickup point in town without a detour for weight or height.
About 9.2 miles north-east, the North American Rail Network shows the ALABAMA CITY rail yard. A tractor that has worked shuttles to that yard can be picked up wherever it was last parked; send the street address and a phone number for whoever opens the gate.
Manufacturing shifts and construction crews
Manufacturing holds 549 positions in Steele, or 71.6 percent of the 767 counted for 2023 in the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. Box trucks and straight trucks that served plant routes are part of what we buy; a service log from the plant garage, if you kept one, belongs in the message with the photos.
County Business Patterns, from the Census Bureau, puts construction establishments in the area at six. Contractors selling a dump truck, flatbed or water truck should gather the title and any annual inspection records before we talk, so nothing waits on a missing sheet.
Cattle pots, horse rigs and feed trucks
Cattle lead the county’s farm list, then equine and deer, across 585 farms that USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counted in the county around Steele. Steele owners with a cattle pot, a horse trailer rig or a feed truck can sell it to us from the barn lot where it sits.
Take pictures of the tractor and the trailer in daylight, including the floor and the gate side, and send them with the title. If the truck is registered to the farm rather than to you, tell us whose name is on the title so the right person signs.
In Alabama, the Alabama Department of Revenue handles title applications through County License Plate Issuing Officials, and the Alabama Department of Revenue lists the office serving Steele at 165 5th Ave., Ashville, 35953, about 8 miles away. A Steele owner without the title in hand should visit that Ashville counter first, and we book the collection once the duplicate arrives.
Bring your registration and photo ID to the Ashville counter, and ask about any lien still shown on the record. Once the replacement title is in your hand, send us a photo of the front and back and we set up collection.
The questions we get asked in Steele
- Do you buy farm trucks that only ever ran inside Alabama?FMCSA’s carrier census shows 34 of Steele’s 39 carriers working intrastate only, and those trucks are part of what we buy. An Alabama title and the keys are what we need.
