Red Rock to Fishtrap
Quarries south of Sumiton and mines to the east
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Southern Red Rock, a crushed-stone quarry 4.8 miles south-east of Sumiton, and Bessie Mine, another stone quarry 7 miles south. A dump truck or tractor that has hauled from either pit can be collected at the quarry yard or wherever it is parked now; give us the site name and who holds the gate key.
Black Warrior Mine No 1, a coal mine 10.7 miles east, and Fishtrap, a coal mine 11.1 miles south, are both on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s register. If your truck is parked on mine property, tell us before pickup whether the operator needs a visitor sign-in or an escort, so the collection is arranged on their terms.
North-east of town, Dodge Mine is a coal preparation plant 17 miles out by the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s listing. Send us photos of the cab, the frame and the bed or trailer, plus the VIN plate, and say which of these Walker County sites the truck served.
Racks west, rails south-east
Tanker loading at Vulcan and Birmingport, freight at New Boyles
Seven and a third miles west of Sumiton, the Energy Information Administration lists the Vulcan petroleum product terminal, and Birmingport, a second petroleum product terminal, lies 13.5 miles south. A tanker tractor that loads at either rack can be picked up from your own lot; list the trailer separately if you are selling it too.
The New Boyles rail yard stands 18.4 miles south-east, according to the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. If your truck shuttles freight to that yard, have the registration and any service records together so the paperwork matches the unit we see.
Sumiton carriers keep mostly to Alabama roads
FMCSA’s carrier census shows 30 active carriers based in Sumiton, with 26 of them running intrastate and only 4 authorised for interstate work. Fourteen are private fleets hauling their own goods, so the truck you sell may belong to a contractor or farm rather than a for-hire outfit; either way, the name on the title is who signs.
Machinery and large objects is the cargo class most often listed, by 7 carriers in the FMCSA census, ahead of coal and coke and motor vehicles at 6 apiece and general freight at 5. A lowboy tractor, a coal hauler and a car carrier are all trucks we collect here.
The three biggest fleets on FMCSA’s census in town run 9, 6 and 4 power units. If you are selling more than one truck from a yard that size, send the VINs as a list and we can collect them together.
Drivers working within a hundred-mile radius number 36 in the FMCSA carrier census, against 29 who go beyond it. The same FMCSA census gives a median of 7,000 miles a truck across the 7 carriers that report mileage. Tell us whether your truck is kept in a yard around Sumiton or Jasper, and we collect it there.
Across 26 trucks inspected between September 2024 and August 2026, FMCSA roadside inspection records put the median model year halfway between 2020 and 2021, and roughly 19 percent were ten or more years old. Whatever the year, have the odometer reading and the VIN to hand when you first contact us.
Manufacturing, farms and building crews
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023 put 1,337 jobs in Sumiton, with manufacturing holding 112 of them, agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting 62, and construction 53. Box trucks, flatbeds and log trucks from those trades are all welcome; tell us what the truck carried and what body is mounted on it.
Dump trucks and service bodies from a contractor’s yard can go together in one collection if the titles are ready.
Walker County holds 437 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, where cattle, equine and cut flowers lead the list. A livestock hauler or a horse-trailer tractor from one of those farms is collected at the barn; tell us whether the farm lane takes a tow vehicle.
A missing title is replaced up the road in Jasper
In Alabama the Alabama Department of Revenue issues titles, and its County License Plate Issuing Officials take the applications. For Sumiton sellers, the Walker County office at 1900 3rd Ave., Jasper, 35502 is 14.4 miles away according to the Alabama Department of Revenue’s list of licensing offices.
If the title is missing, start the replacement at that Jasper office before pickup and tell us it is in progress. Bring the registration and your ID, and if a lender still holds a lien, have the release letter ready too.
