Small fleets that stay in state
Of the 88 Aptos carriers still active in FMCSA’s carrier census, an in-state registration covers 82, while just 5 hold interstate authority. If your truck has only ever carried California loads, have its California registration and title in the same name before we talk, since a matched pair is what lets the paperwork close cleanly.
Of those carriers, 19 are private fleets according to the same FMCSA census, meaning a business moving its own goods rather than hauling for hire. A landscaping outfit, a builder or a grower selling one of its own trucks should have someone who can sign for the company ready, along with the title in the business name.
The biggest fleet on the Aptos list runs 29 power units with 17 drivers, per FMCSA’s carrier census, and the next two hold 8 and 6 units. If you are thinning a yard of several trucks, send us the VINs together and we will plan one collection trip rather than one per truck.
Water wells, refuse and general freight
General freight is the cargo listed most often by Aptos carriers, with 10 of them naming it in FMCSA’s carrier census. Box trucks and straight trucks doing that local delivery work are trucks we buy, so photograph the cargo box inside and out as well as the cab.
Five Aptos carriers list well water as a cargo with FMCSA, and four list garbage and refuse. For a water tanker, note the tank capacity and the pump setup; for a packer or roll-off, note the body make and the hydraulics, alongside the chassis photos.
Three local carriers haul motor vehicles, according to the FMCSA census. A rollback or car carrier sells with its bed and winch included, so tell us the bed length and include photos of the deck and the controls.
Aggregate pits in the Santa Cruz hills
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Olive Springs crushed-stone quarry 4.7 miles north-west of Aptos, with the Quail Hollow sand and gravel operation 10.9 miles out and Felton Quarry 11.7 miles to the west. A dump truck or transfer that has run aggregate from those pits can stay at the yard it works from; give us the gate contact and we arrange collection there.
Down the coast, the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places Watsonville Yard 10.5 to 11 miles south-east of town. If your tractor sits near the yard in Watsonville rather than at your Aptos address, tell us the street location so the pickup goes to the truck, not to you.
Work and crops
Builders, makers and nurseries
Manufacturing accounted for 255 and construction for 183 of the 3,379 Aptos jobs that the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts recorded for 2023. Contractors’ trucks often carry a company name on the doors and a title in a business name, so check whose name the title shows before anything else.
Santa Cruz County had 614 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and its leading products were propagative material, potted flowering plants and cut flowers. A nursery stake bed or reefer box truck from those growers is welcome; include the reefer unit’s make and hours with your photos.
Short runs around the bay
FMCSA’s carrier census records 68 Aptos drivers working within 100 miles and 101 working beyond that radius. Wherever your routes went, the truck is collected from where it now stands, so give us that address rather than your home base.
Among the 10 local carriers that report mileage, the median truck covered 8,000 miles a year in FMCSA records. Read the odometer off the dash and send it with the VIN, as those two numbers open every conversation we have about a truck.
New registrations stay modest here: FMCSA lists 3 new Aptos carriers in 2025 and none in 2024. If you started up recently and are now selling, your operating authority paperwork and the title are what we need to see.
Repealed, paused and contested: three CARB truck rules
The California Air Resources Board lists the Advanced Clean Fleets drayage and high-priority fleet requirements as repealed, and enforcement of the zero-emission sales requirement for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles is paused by a federal court order. Neither ruling stops an Aptos owner from selling a diesel truck to us.
The Advanced Clean Trucks Regulation remains contested, per the Air Resources Board’s own notice of amendments. Keep any CARB compliance records you hold with the title, because a full file answers questions before they are asked.
The questions we get asked in Aptos
- Can you pick up my dump truck at the Olive Springs quarry instead of in Aptos?Mine Safety and Health Administration records put Olive Springs Quarry 4.7 miles north-west of Aptos, a short trip for our driver, who picks the dump truck up right at the pit. Name the quarry staffer who can open the yard for that visit.
- I haul water for Aptos well work; will you take a water tanker?Five Aptos carriers list well water as cargo in FMCSA’s carrier census, and their tankers are trucks we purchase. Send the tank size, pump details and photos of the whole rig.
- My Santa Cruz County nursery holds the truck’s title rather than me personally; who has to sign?USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture names propagative material and potted flowering plants as leading products across Santa Cruz County’s 614 farms, and a truck titled to a nursery needs a signature from someone authorised to sell for the business. Bring that signer and the nursery’s title to the handover.
