Ninety-four carriers, nearly all of them in-state
Of the 94 active carriers with an Avenal address, just 7 hold interstate authority and the other 87 stay inside California, by the count in FMCSA’s carrier census. A tractor or straight truck from one of these operations has usually spent its working life on California roads, so the California registration card is the document to find before anything else, alongside the title.
Sixteen of those Avenal carriers are private fleets, according to the same FMCSA census, meaning they move their own goods rather than freight for hire. If your truck belonged to a farm, a contractor or a family business rather than a trucking company, it still belongs on our list. Tell us what it carried and who owned it on paper; the name on the title is the name we deal with.
Fleets in town stay small: the three biggest Avenal carriers in FMCSA’s records run 4, 2 and 2 power units. With one or two trucks to a yard, the person who drove it is often the person selling it, so you can answer most of our questions from memory and a few phone photos of the cab, frame and tires.
General freight, hay and fresh produce
Thirty-seven Avenal outfits tick the general freight box on their federal carrier census filing with FMCSA. Box trucks, dry vans and day cabs that pulled them all fit what we purchase; send the VIN and a picture of the odometer to begin.
Six carriers here are registered for grain, feed and hay, six more for fresh produce and five for dry bulk commodities, per the federal carrier census. If yours pulled a hopper, a flatbed of baled hay or a reefer, mention the trailer too, and say whether it goes with the tractor or stays behind with you.
Out in the county, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 862 farms in Kings County, with milk, cattle and cotton at the top of the sales list. A farm truck that has sat in a shed between harvests can be collected right where it is parked; give us the field road or yard address and the name of whoever holds the gate key.
Gravel to the west, a naval air station to the east
Up the road toward Coalinga, 16.4 miles north-west of Avenal, the sand and gravel workings called Coalinga Pit are on file with the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Dump trucks and end-dumps that hauled aggregate from that pit can be picked up at the pit, at your yard or wherever you left them, so tell us which before we schedule anything.
Twenty-two miles north-east, NAS Lemoore appears in the Bureau of Transportation Statistics list of military installations, 22.3 miles from town. If your truck has made deliveries onto the base, keep any gate or access paperwork with it; it is useful history, and it tells us whether collection needs a pass.
Avenal has just 3 construction firms with payroll, going by the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. A contractor’s truck is often kept on a job site rather than at home, so let us know the site’s address and whether the truck can be reached without moving other equipment.
Odometers, model years and the folder
Have the current odometer figure ready when you contact us, since it is one of the first things we ask for and it goes on the bill of sale.
Between November 2024 and August 2026, inspectors stopped 38 Avenal-based trucks, and FMCSA roadside inspection records put the middle model year at 2017, with 44.7 percent of them a decade old or older. Whatever the year of yours, the model year printed on the title is the one we use, so check that it matches the VIN plate on the door.
Gather service records, inspection reports and receipts for tires or parts into one folder. They are not required, but they let us see the truck’s working history alongside the photos you send.
The title and CARB
Clearing the title and the CARB rules from Avenal
California’s title agency, not us, handles a missing title, and the request is best made before collection is booked. Where a lender still appears on the title, keep the lien release or the lender’s contact details to hand so the transfer goes through.
The Air Resources Board has repealed the drayage and high-priority fleet parts of its Advanced Clean Fleets regulation; a federal court filing shows enforcement of the 2036 zero-emission sales requirement paused; and the Advanced Clean Trucks regulation is contested. An Avenal owner can still sell us a diesel truck under all three, and a photo of the engine family label helps if it can be reached.
A small job base, a wide service area
Avenal held 2,959 jobs in 2023, a figure from the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. Plenty of trucks here are parked at home between runs, and a driveway or side lot is a perfectly good place for us to collect from.
Four fresh carrier registrations came out of Avenal in 2025, after a single one in 2024, on FMCSA’s census. If you started your operation recently and are now selling the truck, bring the purchase paperwork from when you bought it as well as the current title.
The questions we get asked in Avenal
- The tractor sits by the gravel pit outside Coalinga; must it come to Avenal first?Coalinga Pit is 16.4 miles north-west of town on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from there or from any yard nearby. Tell us which yard and who unlocks it for the Avenal pickup.
- Will you buy a Kings County farm truck that carried baled hay?Kings County has 862 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and six Avenal carriers list grain, feed and hay with FMCSA, so hay trucks are a familiar part of what we purchase. Put the pink slip and the registration card together before the call.
- My Avenal truck never left California; is in-state work a problem?Eighty-seven of the 94 Avenal carriers in FMCSA’s census are intrastate, so an in-state-only truck is the usual case here. The California title and registration are all we need to start.
- Where does an Avenal seller replace a missing title?A replacement comes from California’s title agency, and Avenal sellers should start that request before we book collection. If a lien is still recorded, bring the lender’s release as well.
