Coast to quarry
Rock and gravel hauling inland from the Avila shore
Whale Rock Quarry, a crushed-stone operation the Mine Safety and Health Administration places 19.2 miles north-west of Avila Beach, is one of four mine sites inside a twenty-mile ring of town. Dump trucks, end dumps and transfer rigs that load at a pit like that are on the list of trucks we buy. If yours is parked at the quarry gate rather than at your house, give us the gate location and the name of whoever holds the key.
Rocky Canyon Plant, another crushed-stone site, lies 20 miles north on Mine Safety and Health Administration records, while Santa Margarita Aggregates works sand and gravel 17.2 miles to the north-east. A truck that has spent years hauling rock between those two belongs to a working route, so tell us which plant it loaded at and roughly how many seasons it ran there. The VIN and a clear photo of the door sticker answer most of our first questions.
To the south, Gordon Sand Co is a sand and gravel operation the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists 17.4 miles from town. Owners whose trucks sit near that pit can sell without driving north to the coast; we arrange collection at the site.
Union Pacific and SMV sidings
Guadalupe’s two yards and the trucks that meet them
GUADALUPE YARD (UP) sits 18.3 miles south-east of Avila Beach according to the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Right beside it, GUADALUPE YARD (SMV) appears at 18.9 miles in that same North American Rail Network. Day cabs and flatbed tractors that shuttle loads off those sidings are trucks we purchase.
If your tractor works the Guadalupe yards and stays parked down there between runs, there is no need to bring it back up the coast. Send us the street address of the lot, photos of the cab, frame, fifth wheel and tires, and a phone number for whoever can let a driver in.
Behind the coastal hills
Cattle and nursery stock behind the Avila hills
San Luis Obispo County counted 2,184 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and propagative material, cattle and transplants headed the county’s listed products. Livestock haulers, stake beds and box trucks that carry seedlings or nursery stock between those farms are all trucks we will look at.
A ranch truck often lives in a barn or on a back pasture, not in a yard with a street number. Drop a pin or describe the gate and road when you write to us, and mention whether the ground is firm enough for a tow vehicle to reach it.
Small coastal economy
Jobs, builders and the vans that serve them
Avila Beach held 853 jobs in 2023, a figure from the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for workplaces inside the town. Of the town’s businesses, County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau show 3 construction establishments, so contractor pickups, flatbeds and small dump trucks make up part of what is registered around here.
If you run one of those builders or a service business and are clearing out a work truck, have the registration card and any service records together before you call. Those two items, plus a few photos taken in daylight, let us talk about the truck itself from the first conversation.
South Higuera, a short trip from Avila Beach
The State of California Department of Motor Vehicles handles titles through its DMV field offices, and its San Luis Obispo office at 3190 S Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo, 93401, sits 5 miles from Avila Beach by the department’s listing. A seller who has misplaced the title can request a replacement there before the sale.
Bring the signed title, or the replacement once the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles issues it, along with your registration. If a lender still holds a lien on the truck, tell us at the start so the release can be sorted out alongside everything else.
Statewide truck standards
Where the state’s zero-emission truck regulations stand
California’s Advanced Clean Trucks Regulation is contested, according to the California Air Resources Board’s own amendment notice. A federal court filing addresses the state’s requirement that every new medium- and heavy-duty truck sold be zero-emission, and enforcement of that requirement is paused.
For fleets around Avila Beach, the Advanced Clean Fleets Regulation - Drayage Fleet Requirements and High Priority and Federal Fleets Requirements has been repealed, as the Air Resources Board’s rulemaking record shows. Owners deciding whether to sell a diesel tractor can read those three notices directly rather than relying on hearsay about them.
The questions we get asked in Avila Beach
- Can my dump truck stay at the Santa Margarita pit instead of coming down to the Avila coast?Santa Margarita Aggregates sits 17.2 miles north-east of town on Mine Safety and Health Administration records, and we collect from sites like that directly. Send the pit’s location and the name of whoever unlocks it for our driver.
- The pink slip went missing in a move to Avila Beach. Who issues another?San Luis Obispo’s DMV field office at 3190 S Higuera Street is 5 miles away, according to the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles, and it can issue a replacement title. Take your registration card and photo ID to the Higuera counter.
- Does Camp San Luis Obispo matter if I hauled for it?NG ITC Camp San Luis Obisbo lies 9.7 miles north of Avila Beach in Bureau of Transportation Statistics listings. If your truck hauled there, mention it along with the VIN and photos, and we will plan pickup wherever the truck is parked.
