Cement, limestone and gravel north of the lake

The Mine Safety and Health Administration places the Cushenbury Plant, a cement plant, 8 miles north of Big Bear Lake, with the Lucerne Valley Plant and Quarry, a crushed-stone operation, at 8.6 miles. A dump truck, mixer or tractor that hauls out of either site may be sitting in a yard out there rather than in town, so give us the exact address where it is parked and the name of whoever can let us in.

Omya California, a crushed-stone quarry, is 10.4 miles north on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and two sand and gravel operations, Lucerne Valley at 9 miles and Lucerne Valley Pit at 11.9 miles, sit in the same direction. If your truck spent its shifts between those pits and the lake, send photos of the body, the frame and the tires along with the cab, and note which pit or plant it served.

Keep any site paperwork from those quarries, such as scale tickets, gate passes or safety checks, in the cab folder with the title. It tells us where the truck has worked without you having to reconstruct it from memory.

Forty-eight carriers in a lake town

FMCSA’s carrier census lists 48 active carriers based in Big Bear Lake, and 45 of them operate intrastate against 2 that cross state lines. For most owners here that means a California-plated truck that stays in-state, so have the California title and current registration together before you call.

Fourteen of those carriers run private fleets, hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire, according to the same federal census. A contractor’s flatbed, a lodge’s shuttle or a supplier’s box truck all fall into that group; tell us what the truck carried for your business and we will ask the right follow-up questions.

The biggest operation on FMCSA’s register here lists 33 power units and 54 drivers, the next 18 power units and 11 drivers, and a third 5 power units with 6 drivers. Whether you are selling one unit out of a group that size or the only truck you own, we look at each truck on its own.

Freight and passengers

Tow rigs, buses and general freight

General freight is the most common cargo among local carriers, at 14 on FMCSA’s census, while driveaway and towaway, motor vehicles and passengers each count 7. Rollback tow trucks, car haulers and passenger coaches are all trucks we will talk to you about.

For a bus or shuttle that moved passengers around the lake, have the seating layout and any state inspection certificates ready to photograph. For a tow truck, include the boom, the bed and the controls in your photos so we can see the equipment, not just the chassis.

New registrations stay small here: FMCSA records 3 new carriers in 2024 and 1 in 2025. If you started hauling recently and are now stepping back, the newer authority does not change anything about selling the truck itself.

Short runs from a lake town

Have the current odometer reading and the VIN on hand when you reach out; those two details start every conversation we have about a truck.

Drivers working within 100 miles of base number 134 in FMCSA’s census, against 56 who go farther. A truck on those local loops is most likely parked at home or at a shop in Big Bear Lake or out toward Lucerne Valley, and we come to wherever it is.

Construction work in the local economy

Of 4,720 jobs counted in Big Bear Lake for 2023 by the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts, 88 were in construction, a 1.9 percent share, and 62 were in transportation and warehousing, at 1.3 percent. Pickups with dump beds, stake trucks and small cranes from those trades are part of what we buy.

If the truck is titled to one of those companies rather than to you personally, have the business owner or an officer ready to sign the title, and bring a copy of the registration that matches the company name.

Feed trucks, livestock haulers and milk tankers that served those operations can be sold from wherever they are parked in the county.

If a farm truck is registered under a ranch or dairy name, gather the title, the registration and any brand or livestock-hauling permits you hold, and photograph the trailer hookups and the bed or tank.
