Thirty intrastate outfits and one that crosses state lines
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 32 active motor carriers based in Capitola, and 30 of them are registered for intrastate work against a single interstate operator. A tractor or straight truck from one of these outfits has most likely spent its life on California roads, so its California registration card is the paper we will ask about first.
Eight of those Capitola carriers are private fleets, per the same federal census: companies moving their own goods rather than freight for hire. If your truck belonged to a business that ran it for its own deliveries, have the business name on the title match the person signing, or bring a letter showing you can sign for the company.
Refuse bodies, log trucks and lowboys
Five Capitola carriers declare general freight to FMCSA, three declare garbage, refuse and trash, two declare logs, poles, beams and lumber, and two declare machinery and large objects. That spread covers box trucks, roll-off and packer bodies, log rigs and tractors that pull lowboys, and we buy every one of those body styles.
With a refuse or log body, send a photo of the chassis plate and one of the body’s own data plate or builder tag. For a tractor that has pulled machinery trailers, send a clear shot of the fifth wheel and the VIN sticker on the door jamb along with the title.
Stone and gravel pits in the Santa Cruz hills
Olive Springs Quarry, a crushed-stone operation the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists 5.7 miles north of Capitola, is the closest pit to town. The Mine Safety and Health Administration also lists Felton Quarry 8.9 miles west and the Quail Hollow sand and gravel operation 9.1 miles north-west. A dump truck or transfer rig that worked these sites may still be parked at a contractor’s yard up in the hills; give us that address and a gate contact and we collect it there.
The Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns counts 34 construction establishments in the area, and its LEHD job counts put 165 construction jobs among the 5,575 counted in Capitola for 2023. If your dump truck or water truck went from quarry to job site, photograph any service log or annual inspection sheet you kept and send it along.
Watsonville Yard, east along the coast
The North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, places Watsonville Yard about 12.8 miles east of Capitola, with a second listing for it at 13.4 miles. Day cabs that shuttle loads between the yard and nearby warehouses fall well within what we purchase.
If your truck is kept near the Watsonville tracks rather than at your home in Capitola, there is no need to move it. Tell us the street, whether a trailer is still attached, and who holds the keys, and the pickup gets arranged around that lot.
Odometer and fleet size
Fleets of seven to eighteen trucks around Capitola
The census also counts 45 drivers working within 100 miles of base and 34 who go beyond it. Read the odometer off the dash and send it with the VIN; those two figures start every conversation we have about a truck.
One Capitola fleet runs 18 power units with 19 drivers on FMCSA’s census, and two more run 10 and 7 power units. Selling several trucks from one fleet works the same as selling one: list each VIN, note which titles are in the company’s name, and we take them on a single schedule.
Potted plants and cut flowers from Santa Cruz County growers
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 614 farms in Santa Cruz County, led by propagative material, potted flowering plants, and cut flowers and greens. Reefer box trucks and flatbeds that carry nursery stock out of the county fit squarely in what we take.
Farm trucks are often titled to the grower’s business rather than a person, so check the name on the certificate before you call. If a title has gone missing, California’s title agency issues the duplicate, so start that request before you contact us about the truck.
The questions we get asked in Capitola
- My truck hauled out of the Olive Springs quarry. Will you pick it up at the pit rather than in Capitola?Olive Springs Quarry is 5.7 miles north of Capitola on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s listing, and we collect from quarry and contractor yards like it. Give us the name of whoever runs that quarry gate and the collection is booked through them.
- Are there low or weight-posted bridges around Capitola that affect pickup?Capitola’s 8 spans in the National Bridge Inventory include no weight-posted crossing and no clearance under 14 feet, so a tall dump body or loaded lowboy has an open road out of town. Send the street address where the truck is parked and we plan the route from there.
- I ran a refuse truck under a Capitola carrier number. Which documents should I gather for a packer or roll-off?Three Capitola carriers declare garbage, refuse and trash to FMCSA, so packer and roll-off trucks are familiar here. Have the title, the current registration, and photos of the chassis and body plates ready.
