Carlsbad carriers by the cargo they declare
Of the 423 active Carlsbad carriers on FMCSA’s carrier census, general freight is a declared cargo for 128. If your tractor or box truck moved general freight around North County, have the title and current registration in your name before you call, and we can talk about the truck rather than the paperwork.
Among those same Carlsbad registrations, the FMCSA census shows 23 carriers hauling passengers, 22 moving household goods and 21 doing utility work. A shuttle bus, a moving van or a bucket truck from one of those operations is a truck we will look at; send the VIN, a few photos of each side and the body, and tell us what equipment is mounted on it.
Carlsbad added 15 carriers to FMCSA’s register in 2024 and another 21 in 2025. If you are one of those newer owner-operators closing out a first truck, the registration card and the payoff letter from any lender are the two papers to find first.
Intrastate authority, short and long radius
Of the carriers in the federal census for Carlsbad, 377 are registered as intrastate and 45 as interstate, with 133 running private fleets that carry their own goods. A truck that never left California still needs a clean California title in hand, so check that the name on it matches the name you will sign with.
Drivers split almost evenly by distance in FMCSA’s records: 544 work within 100 miles of base and 513 beyond it. For a short-radius truck, tell us the yard in or near Carlsbad where it is kept; for a long-haul unit, tell us the city or yard where it is parked, since we collect from wherever it is.
The FMCSA filings of 61 Carlsbad carriers that report mileage put the median at 11,628 miles a year per truck. Have the current odometer reading ready with the VIN; it is the first thing we ask for with any truck.
Inspected trucks and the three biggest fleets
Roadside inspection records from FMCSA cover 116 Carlsbad-based trucks checked between August 2024 and August 2026, and their median model year is 2020. Whatever year yours is, the inspection reports from those stops belong in the folder with the title.
In that same set of FMCSA inspections, 15.5 percent of the trucks were ten or more model years old. Older or newer, we buy commercial trucks of every year, so give us the year, make and model up front along with any service records you keep.
The three biggest fleets in the Carlsbad census run 50, 43 and 43 power units, according to FMCSA. If you manage a fleet near that size and are retiring several trucks together, send a list of VINs and where each one parks, and we will plan the collection as one job.
Where the work is
Manufacturing, wholesale and construction around town
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023 put 80,229 jobs in Carlsbad, with manufacturing holding 14,692 of them, or 18.3 percent. Straight trucks and tractors that served those plants often sit at a loading dock or in a company lot, so tell us whose property it is on and who can open the gate.
Wholesale trade accounts for 6,562 local jobs and construction for 3,529 in the same LEHD figures, while transportation and warehousing holds 898. A dump truck or flatbed from a job site can be collected from the site itself; give us the address and a contact on the day.
County Business Patterns, from the Census Bureau, lists 309 construction establishments in Carlsbad and 7 warehousing ones. Contractors selling a work truck should pull the registration and any smog or inspection paperwork from the glovebox before the truck is collected.
Quarries and yards
Rail yards, quarries and the base to the north-west
The North American Rail Network places East Brook Yard 8.4 miles north-west of Carlsbad and Escondido Yard 10.8 miles east. Day cabs that worked the yards around those rails can be picked up near them, so tell us which side of town the truck is sitting on.
Inland, the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Superior - Twin Oaks, a crushed-stone quarry 9.2 miles north-east, and West Coast Rock and Sand, a sand and gravel operation 18.3 miles south-east. A dump truck or transfer rig that hauled aggregate from either is welcome; photos of the bed, the frame and the tires help us see it before we arrive.
Further out, MSHA records the Jerry Brown dimension-stone quarry 15.5 miles east and the Oceanview Mine, an industrial-mineral site, 22.5 miles north-east. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics places Camp Pendleton 8.7 miles north-west and the Fallbrook installation 15.9 miles north. If your truck is parked anywhere along that stretch, we come to it.
Bridges and growers in San Diego County
Of Carlsbad’s 44 bridges in the National Bridge Inventory, not one carries a load posting or sits below 14 feet of clearance. A tall box truck or a loaded dump can be reached on local roads without a clearance detour, so the address where it sits is all we need to route the pickup.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 4,031 farms across San Diego County, led by foliage plants, potted flowering plants and cut flowers. If a nursery or greenhouse truck is part of what you are selling, tell us which grower lot it sits on and bring the title and registration to the pickup.
The questions we get asked in Carlsbad
- My dump truck is parked near the Twin Oaks quarry, not in Carlsbad. Will you pick it up at the quarry? The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Superior - Twin Oaks 9.2 miles north-east of Carlsbad, and a quarry lot is as good a pickup point as any driveway in town. Give us the site address and a contact who can let us in.
- I ran a nursery delivery truck for a San Diego County grower. Would you take a flower grower’s box truck?USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 4,031 farms in San Diego County, with foliage and potted flowering plants at the top, and a box or stake truck that delivered for one of them is a commercial truck we buy. Send the VIN, the odometer reading and photos of the body.
- What paperwork should a Carlsbad owner have before calling? The California title in your name, the current registration and any inspection reports; FMCSA roadside records cover 116 Carlsbad trucks, so if yours was stopped, keep that report with the rest.
