Small town, local routes
Colma’s two dozen trucking outfits, nearly all in-state
FMCSA’s carrier census shows 23 active carriers registered in Colma, and 22 of them run intrastate only, with a single one crossing state lines. If your truck has spent its working life inside California, keep its California registration card in the cab with the title; those two papers are what we check first.
Seven of those Colma operations are private fleets hauling their own goods, according to the same federal census of motor carriers. A business here that owns two or three trucks for its own deliveries can sell one without selling the others; give us the VIN of each unit you want gone and we will treat them one at a time.
The top fleet on the FMCSA list for the town runs 11 power units with 19 drivers, and the next two run four and three. Owners with a handful of trucks in a yard off Mission Street or El Camino Real can send one address and a set of photos for every unit, and we plan a single visit around them.

Freight, cars on carriers and passenger seats
General freight is the cargo listed by five Colma carriers in FMCSA’s census, ahead of two that do driveaway and towaway work and two that carry passengers. For a box truck or straight truck that moved general freight, photograph the cargo body inside and out along with the cab, and note the liftgate if it has one.
Passenger carriers count two entries in the federal register for this town, and one Colma carrier lists farm supplies. Buses and shuttles are sold on the same title as any truck, so a passenger operator here needs the title, the current registration and the seating count ready when we talk.
Car haulers and tow units tied to the driveaway and towaway work listed by FMCSA come with their own equipment to describe. Tell us whether the deck, wheel lift or headache rack stays with the truck, so the photos you send match what we collect.
A DMV counter 1.4 miles away
The State of California Department of Motor Vehicles handles titles through its DMV field offices, and the Daly City office at 1500 Sullivan Avenue, Daly City, 94015, sits about 1.4 miles from Colma. If the title has gone missing, that counter is where a Colma owner applies for a duplicate before the sale.
A title still showing a lender needs that lien released before the truck can change hands, and the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles records the release. Bring the lender’s release letter to the Sullivan Avenue office with the title, then send us a photo of the clean title once it arrives.
East of the cemeteries
Rail sidings and fuel racks three miles east
Three miles east of the Colma town line, South San Francisco Yard appears on the North American Rail Network that the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics maintain. A tractor or flatbed that worked rail-served industry around that yard can stay parked where it is; give us the street address and a gate contact.
Just past it, the Energy Information Administration lists the Brisbane petroleum product terminal about 3.2 miles east of town. Fuel trucks and tankers that loaded there should come with any terminal access or inspection paperwork the owner kept, since those papers tell us where the unit served.
Toward the waterfront
Pier 80, Pier 92 and the Port of San Francisco
Pier 80 at the Port of San Francisco is a roll-on/roll-off terminal 6.4 miles north-east of Colma, as the Bureau of Transportation Statistics records it, and the port itself lies about 7 miles north. Drivers who hauled off the San Francisco piers can sell from home in Colma while the truck stays on the waterfront.
Close by, the Mine Safety and Health Administration registers Pier 92 Marine Aggregate, a sand and gravel operation 6.3 miles north-east. Dump trucks and end dumps that carried aggregate from that pier are trucks we buy; photograph the bed, the tarp system and the plates on the door.
Over the Bay Bridge side
Oakland’s container ramps
Across the water, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists the Port of Oakland 11.6 miles east, with the Oakland International Container Terminal ramp at the same distance and the Nutter Terminal ramp named for Ben Nutter at 10.9 miles. A Colma owner whose day cab pulled containers there can leave it in an East Bay yard and let us collect it on that side.
California’s Advanced Clean Fleets drayage requirements have been repealed, CARB’s rulemaking notice says, and the state’s 2036 zero-emission sales requirement for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles is not being enforced while a court case runs. A port tractor here is sold under the same title steps as any other truck in town.
Colma’s workplaces and San Mateo growers
Workplaces in Colma counted 4,593 jobs in 2023 on the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts, with manufacturing at 93 and wholesale trade at 64. Delivery and service trucks from those employers are sold the same way: title, registration and a few clear photos.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture tallied 250 farms across San Mateo County, led by potted flowering plants, mushrooms and foliage plants. Growers in the county who run a refrigerated or nursery truck can send us its photos and paperwork, and we come to the farm.
The questions we get asked in Colma
- The pink slip for my Colma truck has vanished - which DMV counter replaces it?The Daly City DMV field office of the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles, at 1500 Sullivan Avenue about 1.4 miles away, takes duplicate title applications; start there before the sale.
- My tractor sits on the San Francisco waterfront, not at my Colma house - does it have to come home first?Pier 80 sits 6.4 miles north-east of town on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ listing, and we collect the truck there; send the gate details and a contact.
- Our Colma business hauls its own goods with a few trucks - could one of them go while the others keep working?Seven Colma carriers in FMCSA’s census are private fleets, and any of them can sell a single unit; send its VIN, title and photos and keep the rest working.
