Log, freight and refuse hauling on Humboldt Bay
General freight is the cargo listed by 90 of the 311 Eureka-based carriers that remain active in FMCSA’s carrier census. If your tractor or box truck hauls mixed loads around Humboldt County, gather the title, the current registration and a few clear photos of the cab and frame before you call us.
Logs, poles, beams and lumber appear on 24 carrier registrations in the federal carrier census, the same number that list machinery and large objects. A log truck or lowboy tractor often sits at a landing or a yard rather than in town, so tell us the road it is parked on and whether a pickup can reach it.
Garbage, refuse and trash shows up on 15 Eureka carrier records filed with FMCSA. For a roll-off or packer truck, the body and the chassis may be titled together or apart; send us both documents if you have them, and we will sort out which one the sale needs.
Mostly intrastate work along the coast
Of those 311 carriers, FMCSA’s census lists 288 as intrastate operators and 23 as interstate, with 91 running private fleets. A truck that never left California still needs its California title in your name, so check the name on it matches the one on your registration card.
FMCSA’s carrier census puts 576 Eureka drivers within a 100-mile radius and 538 beyond it. Wherever your driver last parked the truck, on a job site or at your own shop, we arrange collection at that spot instead of asking you to bring it in.
Per truck, a median of 13,333 miles a year is what 49 Eureka carriers reported in their FMCSA filings. Have the odometer reading and the VIN ready on your first call; most of our follow-up questions start from those.
Big operators and median truck years around the bay
Power units at the top three Eureka operations number 61, 54 and 40, with 53, 46 and 27 drivers, according to FMCSA’s carrier census. If you are retiring several units at once, send us a list with each VIN, year and make, and we can work through them together rather than one call per truck.
Whatever year your truck is, service records and inspection reports help us see its history alongside the photos.
Gravel, stone and the fuel terminal
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Hatchery Road Crusher 9.6 miles north-east of Eureka and Christie Bar 10.3 miles out in the same direction, both sand and gravel operations. Dump trucks and end-dump tractors parked at a pit can be collected there; give us the gate contact and the hours the site is open.
Ford Quarries, a crushed-stone quarry, is 11.6 miles north-east of town in MSHA’s records. Two miles and a half south-west, the Energy Information Administration lists the Eureka petroleum product terminal, so if your tank truck is stationed near the bay, tell us which yard it sits in.
Construction, manufacturing and dairy country
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023 put 808 Eureka jobs in construction, 611 in manufacturing, 473 in wholesale trade and 337 in transportation and warehousing, out of 19,027 in total. County Business Patterns, also from the Census Bureau, records 49 construction establishments here, so a contractor selling a flatbed or dump truck should bring the business registration that matches the title.
Humboldt County had 721 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with milk, cattle and hemp as the leading products. A feed truck or livestock hauler parked on a ranch can be collected at the ranch; just tell us how the access road is gated.
The state route crossing over Marina Road
The National Bridge Inventory lists seven bridges in Eureka, none load-posted; the one under 14 feet is State Route 255 over Marina Road, at 10 feet 5 inches of clearance.
If your truck is parked anywhere off Marina Road, mention it when you book, so the route we plan for collecting a tall box or trailer avoids that state route crossing.
The questions we get asked in Eureka
- My log truck is at a landing outside Eureka. Do I have to bring it to town?Twenty-four Eureka carriers list logs and lumber with FMCSA, and their trucks are often parked out of town; we collect from the landing or yard where yours is. Send us the location and who can let us in.
- My Humboldt County truck’s title has gone missing - where does a replacement come from?A truck registered in Humboldt County is titled by California’s title agency, and a duplicate comes from that office. Start the request before you sell, and tell us it is under way so we can plan around it.
- Can you take a dump truck from one of the gravel pits?Hatchery Road Crusher, Christie Bar and Ford Quarries all sit within 12 miles north-east of Eureka in the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s records, and we collect from sites like these. Name the pit or quarry and who holds the key to its gate.
