Lumber, freight and machinery out of Fortuna
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 139 active carriers based in Fortuna, and 38 of them declare logs, poles, beams or lumber as cargo. If your log truck or flatbed spent its working life on timber loads, tell us the trailer setup and whether it goes with the tractor, so the pickup crew arrives with the right equipment.
General freight is declared by 48 Fortuna carriers in that same FMCSA census, with 21 listing machinery and large objects and 13 listing farm supplies. A lowboy tractor that moved equipment, or a box truck on local freight, both fit what we collect; send the VIN, a few photos of the cab and frame, and the address where it sits.
Of those 139 carriers, the federal census counts 123 operating intrastate only and 16 crossing state lines, while 45 are private fleets hauling their own goods. For an intrastate truck, your California registration card and title are the two papers we ask for first.
One-truck owners and larger Humboldt fleets
The biggest Fortuna-based fleet in FMCSA’s census runs 134 power units with 74 drivers, and the next two carry 37 and 36 power units. If you manage a fleet of that size and are retiring several units at once, list each VIN and its yard location in one message and we will plan the collections together.
Driver counts in the carrier census split 364 operating within 100 miles of home and 262 working beyond that radius. A truck that stays close to Fortuna is usually parked at a home yard or shop when we arrive; a long-haul unit may be sitting at a terminal elsewhere, and either location works if you give us a contact on site.
Thirty Fortuna outfits report yearly mileage in FMCSA’s census, and their trucks log a median 24,667 miles each between the Humboldt coast and wherever the loads go. Have the odometer reading handy when you call, since it is one of the first details we record.
Whatever the year on your title, note it along with the engine make when you get in touch.
Of those 199 Fortuna trucks, FMCSA’s inspection records show 43.7 percent carrying a model year ten or more years back. Older or newer, we collect them the same way; keep any inspection reports you were handed at the roadside and send them with the VIN.
Gravel, crushed stone and the fuel terminal
Alton Pit & Mill, a sand and gravel operation listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, lies 2.7 miles south of Fortuna. Dump trucks and transfer rigs that ran out of a pit like this one are often parked at the operator’s yard, so tell us whether a gate needs opening and who holds the key.
Farther out, the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Hatchery Road Crusher 20.9 miles north-east and Ford Quarries, a crushed-stone quarry, 24.9 miles north. A truck still parked at either site can stay there, and we collect it from the quarry yard itself.
Heading north toward Eureka, a Fortuna fuel hauler reaches the petroleum product terminal that the Energy Information Administration lists 13.4 miles from town. Fuel tankers and the tractors that pulled them qualify too; mention the tank trailer, if it comes with the sale, and bring any cleaning or certification papers you kept.
Construction, dairies and farm hauling
Construction accounts for 155 of Fortuna’s 3,162 jobs, or 4.9 percent, according to the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023, and County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau records 32 construction establishments in town. Contractors selling a dump truck, flatbed or service body can send photos of the bed and the cab together so we see the whole unit.
Humboldt County has 721 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with milk, cattle and hemp at the top of the list. A milk tanker, livestock hauler or farm flatbed parked out at a ranch is fine where it is; give us directions to the gate and the name of whoever will be there.
New registrations in FMCSA’s carrier census show 7 Fortuna carriers starting up in 2024 and 1 in 2025. If you bought a truck to start one of those operations and are now stepping away, the title in your name is what matters; if a lender still holds it, tell us the lender’s name up front.
