Gridley’s farm haulers and private fleets
Of the 219 Gridley carriers active on FMCSA’s census, just 32 run interstate and the other 187 keep their loads inside California. If your rig has only ever worked California roads, have the California registration card in the cab when we arrive; an interstate tractor should also carry its apportioned cab card.
Of those Gridley carriers, 74 run private fleets hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire, according to the same FMCSA census. A grower’s or packer’s own tractor is often parked in a shop yard or barn, so give us the street address and a gate code or contact name for whoever holds the key.
The three biggest operations in town field 30, 17 and 15 power units on FMCSA’s carrier census. Selling several units together from a yard like that works fine; list each VIN and send a photo of every cab and its door sticker so each one can be matched to its title.
Produce, farm supplies and machinery loads
General freight is the cargo class most Gridley carriers declare to FMCSA, at 84, followed by farm supplies at 43, fresh produce at 34 and machinery or large objects at 31. Reefer tractors, flatbeds hauling equipment and dry vans all fall inside what we purchase from sellers around here.
Rice leads Butte County’s crops ahead of cattle and corn, across the 1,667 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. A tractor that pulled rice bins, a cattle pot or a grain trailer may be sitting at a field edge or a feedlot after harvest; tell us whether the ground is dry enough for a tow unit to reach it.
Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting account for 92 jobs located in Gridley, about 4.5 percent of the 2,067 total in the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023, while manufacturing accounts for 122. If your truck served a mill or processing plant in town, keep its maintenance log from that employer with the title.
Quarries, gravel plants and Oroville Yard
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Pacific Heights Pit, a crushed-stone quarry, 9.5 miles north-east of Gridley, with the Sierra Silica Resources mine a mile beyond it at 10.5 miles. Dump trucks and transfer rigs from those sites can be collected at the pit gate if the operator allows it, so ask the site office before you book.
Further out, Hallwood Plant lies 15 miles south-east and Morehead Pit 15.2 miles south-west, both sand and gravel operations on MSHA’s register, and TRP Table Mountain Plant is a crushed-stone quarry 17.3 miles north-east. For a gravel truck parked at any of them, send photos of the bed, the hoist and the tag axle along with the cab.
On the North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, OROVILLE YARD sits 11.4 miles north-east of town. Day cabs that shuttle loads to and from the yard are welcome; have the VIN and the odometer reading ready when you first call.
Beale, the Chico terminal and longer routes
Beale Air Force Base, which the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places 23.2 miles south-east of Gridley, and the CHICO petroleum product terminal, 24.6 miles north on the Energy Information Administration’s list, are the two farthest sites on that list from town. A fuel tanker or base contractor’s tractor based near either is still a pickup we can plan; give us the nearest cross street.
Forty-six Gridley outfits give FMCSA a mileage figure, and the middle one puts 19,448 miles a year on each truck. Note your own odometer reading and the date you took it, and include a photo of the dash so the figure on the title transfer matches.
Inspection stops and the Butte County fleet’s vintage
Gridley trucks stopped for FMCSA roadside inspections from September 2024 to August 2026 number 112, and their median model year is 2016.5. If yours went through one of those checks, the inspection report is a handy record to send along with the registration.
In that same set of roadside inspection records, 45.5 percent of the trucks carried a model year ten or more years back. Older and newer units are equally part of what we collect, so list the model year plainly in your first message.
Titles, liens and new operators
California titles go through the state’s title agency, and a lost certificate is replaced through it before the sale closes. If a bank or equipment lender still holds a lien, have the payoff letter or lien release in hand so the title can be signed over cleanly.
Gridley added 10 freshly registered carriers in 2024 and another 7 in 2025, going by FMCSA’s carrier census. A newer outfit selling its first tractor should keep the USDOT number, the bill of sale from its own purchase and the current registration together in one folder.
The questions we get asked in Gridley
- Do you collect from farms around Gridley?Butte County holds 1,667 farms on USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and we arrange collection at farm yards, barns and field roads across them; send the address and directions to where the truck is parked.
- Will you buy a dump truck from one of the gravel pits?Pacific Heights Pit, Hallwood Plant and Morehead Pit all sit between 9.5 and 15.2 miles from Gridley on MSHA’s register, and dump trucks from sites like those are part of what we purchase; check with the site office about access first.
- My rig has only hauled inside California. Is an in-state tractor a problem? In Gridley 187 of the 219 carriers on FMCSA’s census are intrastate, so a California-only truck is the usual case here; the California registration and title are what we need to see.
