Sixty-two carriers, all of them staying in California
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 62 active carriers based in Half Moon Bay, and every one of the 62 is registered for intrastate work, with 0 holding interstate authority. If your truck has only run California routes, have its California registration and the carrier’s USDOT number on hand when you call, since those are the first two things we will ask for.
Of those coastside operators, 20 run private fleets hauling their own goods, according to the same FMCSA census. A grower, contractor or landscaper who owns one or two trucks for the business can sell a single unit to us; send the VIN, a photo of each side of the cab and the name on the title.
At the top of the Half Moon Bay list, FMCSA’s census shows one operator with 18 power units and 18 drivers, then fleets of 12 and 10 trucks. If you are clearing several trucks out of one yard at once, list each unit’s VIN and where on the property it is parked, so one collection visit can cover all of them.
Freight, refuse, farm supplies and heavy machinery
General freight is the cargo most often declared here, with 14 carriers listing it in FMCSA’s census, while 6 list garbage and refuse. Box trucks and roll-off or packer bodies both fit what we collect, so tell us the body type and its make along with the chassis.
Five Half Moon Bay carriers declare farm supplies and another five declare machinery and large objects, by FMCSA’s count. For a flatbed or lowboy setup, photograph the deck, the ramps and the tie-down points, and say whether the trailer goes with the tractor or stays behind.
Potted plants, mushrooms and foliage across San Mateo County
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 250 farms in San Mateo County, led by potted flowering plants, mushrooms and foliage plants. A refrigerated straight truck or a stake bed that moved nursery stock from a greenhouse can stay parked at the grower’s site; give us the farm address and a gate contact.
Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting account for 107 of the 4,826 jobs located in Half Moon Bay in 2023, per the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. Farm trucks are often titled to a family member or a ranch name, so check whose name is printed on the California title before we schedule anything.
Construction crews on the coast
Construction holds 168 local jobs, a 3.5 percent share, on the 2023 figures from the Census Bureau’s LEHD program. Dump trucks, utility bodies and crew-cab haulers from those jobs are trucks we buy; a list of the upfits on the chassis helps us describe it correctly.
San Mateo County has 53 construction establishments on record in the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. When the truck belongs to a company rather than a person, have whoever signs for the business ready to sign the title over.
Langley Hill Quarry, a crushed-stone operation the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists 13.9 miles south-east of town, and the Pier 92 Marine Aggregate sand and gravel site 19.5 miles north are both on the MSHA roster. A dump truck that has worked either site can be collected wherever it is parked now.
Rail yards, a port and a fuel terminal toward the bay
The North American Rail Network places Redwood City Yard 12.2 miles east and South San Francisco Yard 13.3 miles north of Half Moon Bay. A tractor kept near either yard does not need to come back over to the coast; send us the street address where it sits.
Thirteen miles east, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists the port at Redwood City, and 19.8 miles north it lists Pier 80, the roll-on/roll-off terminal at the Port of San Francisco. If your truck works from a port lot, tell us whether we need a badge or an escort to reach it.
Brisbane’s petroleum product terminal sits 15.7 miles north on the Energy Information Administration’s list. For a fuel or tank truck, note the tank’s capacity and compartment count and include any tank test certificates you hold.
Half Moon Bay rigs and their 2021 median model year
Between October 2024 and August 2026, 31 trucks from Half Moon Bay carriers came through roadside checks, and those FMCSA roadside inspection records put their median model year at 2021, with 12.9 percent ten or more years old. Whatever the model year of yours, the plate, the VIN and a clear odometer photo are what we need to begin.
Ten local carriers reported their mileage to FMCSA’s census, and the median among them is 10,000 miles per truck. Keep the service log with the truck if you have one, since it answers questions about the engine and hours before we ask them.
Reaching the truck on the coast
The National Bridge Inventory records 7 bridges in and around Half Moon Bay, none load-posted and none under 14 feet of clearance. For a tall reefer or a loaded tractor, mention it only if the truck sits up a private road or behind a locked gate.
Up the coast 3.8 miles to the north-west, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places Pillar Point Space Force Station. If the truck is parked out near the station, write down the turnoffs and any landmark beside the gate, and send them with the address.
The questions we get asked in Half Moon Bay
- My truck sits at a mushroom or potted-plant grower outside Half Moon Bay. Does it need hauling into town before you come for it?San Mateo County’s 250 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture include plenty of nursery sites, and we collect from the grower’s yard. Tell us which greenhouse row or shed it is beside and who on the farm holds the key.
- My trucking authority never covered interstate runs. Can you still buy the truck? All 62 carriers in FMCSA’s census for Half Moon Bay are intrastate operators, so a California-only truck is the usual case here. Keep the California title and the current registration card together for the signing.
- The truck is kept by the Redwood City rail yard rather than on the coast. Will your hauler cross the hill to that side of the county?Redwood City Yard is 12.2 miles east on the North American Rail Network, and we collect the truck from where it is parked. Send the street address over the hill and the phone number of whoever runs that lot.
- Our San Mateo County building company owns the dump truck. Does the owner or the office manager put a name on the title? Many of the 53 construction establishments in County Business Patterns for San Mateo County hold trucks in the company’s name, and the person authorised to sign for the business signs the title. Have that person available when we schedule the collection.
