Granite pit country
Granite, gravel and crushed stone close to the canyon
Turvey’s Granite Pit, a sand and gravel operation the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists 2.3 miles north-east of Harbison Canyon, is the nearest extraction site to town. If your dump truck or end-dump has hauled out of that pit, tell us so when you first get in touch, and send photos of the bed, the hoist and the cab together.
El Cajon Quarry sits 5.3 miles south-west, a crushed-stone operation on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s register, and LAKESIDE - VIGILANTE AGGREGATES is 8.1 miles north-west. A truck that runs between those two may be parked at either yard on the day we collect; give us the yard address and the name of whoever can let our driver through the gate.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration also lists Santee Aggregates, a crushed-stone quarry 11.3 miles west of the canyon. Have the title, the current registration and any scale tickets or service records together before we arrange pickup there.
Canyon payrolls
Builders and plant workers along Harbison Canyon Road
Construction holds 125 of Harbison Canyon’s 408 jobs in 2023, or 30.6 percent, on the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for the canyon. Contractors who own a flatbed, a water truck or a small dump here can sell it straight from the job site or from a driveway in the canyon.
Manufacturing accounts for 68 of those jobs, or 16.7 percent, in the same LEHD figures. Box trucks and stake beds that carry finished goods for those employers are trucks we take as well; a clear photo of the VIN plate and the odometer gets the conversation started.
Around the canyon, 244 construction establishments appear in the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. If you run one of them and are parting with more than one vehicle, list each VIN and where each truck is parked so the collections can be planned as a group.
Model years of trucks pulled over near the canyon
FMCSA roadside inspection records cover 286 trucks inspected near Harbison Canyon between 2024-09-03 and 2026-08-26, with a median model year of 2018. Whatever year your truck is, send the model year and VIN with your first message.
Of the 286 trucks stopped, FMCSA’s roadside inspection records put 36.4 percent at ten or more model years old. Older and newer units are both on our list; if you kept inspection reports from those stops, put them in the folder with the title.
Base, port, terminal
Miramar, the port and the Mission Valley terminal
Marine Corps Air Station Miramar lies 14.8 miles west of the canyon and the Mission Gorge Rec Area 14.9 miles west, both listed as military installations by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. If your truck sits at a base contractor’s yard out that way, tell us what access rules apply so the pickup can be cleared in advance.
San Diego Unified Port is 16 miles west on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ list of ports, and the Energy Information Administration places the MISSION VALLEY petroleum product terminal 16.5 miles west. A tractor that pulls containers off the waterfront or a tanker that loads at Mission Valley can be collected where it is parked, without a trip back up the canyon.
Nursery and flower hauling in San Diego County
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 4,031 farms in San Diego County, with foliage plants, potted flowering plants and cut flowers listed as the top products. Reefer box trucks and straight trucks that move nursery stock from those growers are welcome here.
If the truck belongs to a farm or nursery rather than to you personally, have the title holder’s name and signature arranged, and bring the registration that matches it. Where a title has gone missing, the state’s title agency issues a replacement before the sale can close.
The questions we get asked in Harbison Canyon
- Can you collect my end-dump from the El Cajon Quarry yard instead of up the canyon?El Cajon Quarry is 5.3 miles south-west of the canyon on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from the yard itself. Pass along the quarry yard’s street address and whoever holds the gate key there.
- My title went missing somewhere between the quarry and home; where do I get another?Harbison Canyon sellers go to the state’s title agency for a duplicate title. Start that request early and send us the receipt along with the registration so we can line up the rest.
- Will you take a box truck from a San Diego County nursery?San Diego County’s 4,031 farms, counted in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, lead with foliage and potted flowering plants, and the trucks that carry that stock are on our list. Photos of the box, the cab and the VIN plate are the place to begin.
