Nursery stock, cut flowers and the trucks that carry them
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 614 farms in Santa Cruz County, led by propagative material, potted flowering plants and cut flowers with cultivated greens. A box truck or reefer that moves plants and flowers out of these growers is usually parked at the farm or the packing shed, so give us that address rather than your home address when you get in touch.
Farm, forestry and fishing work fills 758 Interlaken jobs out of 1,688 in the Census Bureau’s 2023 LEHD job counts, a 44.9 percent share of everyone working in town. If your truck spends the season between fields and coolers, note the gate code or the name of whoever opens the yard, and the pickup can be planned around harvest traffic.
Produce, refrigerated loads and general freight from Interlaken
Of the 89 active carriers based here in FMCSA’s carrier census, 32 list general freight, 18 list fresh produce, and six each list refrigerated food and meat. For a reefer unit, have the trailer or unit serial number and any service records for the refrigeration system ready alongside the truck’s title.
Intrastate operators make up 86 of those 89 carriers, with three running interstate and 40 registered as private fleets, as FMCSA’s carrier census records them. A private-fleet truck owned by a farm or nursery business is often titled to the company, so check whose name is on the California title before we talk, and have someone authorised to sign for the business.
Short-haul miles and the fleets behind them
The FMCSA carrier census shows 226 drivers at Interlaken carriers working within 100 miles and 113 going beyond that radius. A median of 15,000 miles a truck is reported across 19 carriers in the same census. Note the odometer reading and the VIN in your first message; those two figures let us start on your truck straight away.
One fleet registered here runs 88 power units with 110 drivers, another 70 power units with 60 drivers, and a third 12 power units with seven drivers, per FMCSA’s carrier census. If you are selling several trucks from one yard, send a list with each VIN and where each unit is parked, and we can arrange collection of the group in one visit.
Five new carriers registered in 2024 and five more in 2025, according to the carrier census FMCSA keeps. An owner who started recently and now wants out of a truck can sell it the same way a long-established operator does: title, registration and photos are what we need.
Model years on Interlaken trucks stopped for roadside checks
Between August 2024 and August 2026, FMCSA roadside inspection records logged 908 trucks from carriers here, with a median model year of 2020. Of those 908 inspected trucks, 24.45 percent carried a model year ten or more years back, by FMCSA’s roadside count.
Whatever the model year, photograph the cab, the frame, the tires and the data plate on the door jamb, and include the registration card. If you kept inspection reports from roadside checks, send copies with the photos so the record travels with the truck.
Stone from A R Wilson and Olive Springs, freight at Watsonville Yard
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists A R Wilson Quarry, a crushed-stone operation 6.8 miles south-east, and Olive Springs Quarry Inc, 12.6 miles north-west. Dump trucks and transfer rigs that haul stone from either site are usually kept near the pit or at the owner’s yard, and we collect from wherever yours stands.
Further out, the Mine Safety and Health Administration places PLANT 25, a sand and gravel operation, 18 miles east, Quail Hollow Operation 19.8 miles west, and the Marina Landfill industrial-mineral site 24.7 miles south. The Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns counts 210 construction establishments and eight warehousing establishments in the area, and the LEHD job counts put construction at 158 jobs. If your truck is parked at a job site, tell us the site contact and the hours it is open.
Watsonville Yard lies 3.6 miles south of town on the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A tractor that shuttles loads to and from that yard can be picked up near the rail siding as easily as from a driveway in Interlaken.
Paperwork for a California title
Sign-off on a truck sold here runs through California’s title agency. Find the title, check that every owner and lienholder listed on it matches what you expect, and gather the current registration.
If the title has gone missing, the state’s title agency is the office that issues a duplicate, and starting that request before the sale saves a second appointment. Where a lender is still shown on the title, get the lien release from them and keep it with the other papers.
The questions we get asked in Interlaken
- My reefer hauls cut flowers out of a grower near Interlaken. Do I need to empty the yard first?Santa Cruz County’s 614 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture include many flower and plant growers, and we collect trucks straight from those farm yards. Tell us the address and who can open the gate, and leave the truck where it is.
- My dump truck is parked at a quarry south-east of town. Does that dump truck have to leave the quarry before the sale?A R Wilson Quarry sits 6.8 miles south-east of Interlaken in the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s listings, and a truck parked there or at another pit can be collected on site. Name the quarry office contact and say which days the pit gate opens to visitors.
- Our nursery company owns the box truck on its California title. Which person at the nursery puts a name on the sale?Forty of the carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census for Interlaken are private fleets, and many of their trucks are titled to a company. Whoever is authorised to sign for that company signs the California title, and we work with them directly.
- The title to my Interlaken produce truck is lost. Where do I get a fresh title for a reefer kept near Watsonville Yard? For a truck kept in Interlaken, the duplicate comes from California’s title agency, the same office for all of Santa Cruz County. Apply for the duplicate, keep the receipt, and tell us where things stand when you get in touch.
