Thirty-seven carriers, nearly all of them local
Of the 37 active Los Altos carriers on FMCSA’s carrier census, 33 keep their trucks on California roads under intrastate registration alone. If your truck has stayed inside California, have its California registration card and the title in your name ready before we talk; those two papers settle most of what we need to know.
Only 4 Los Altos carriers hold interstate authority, according to the same federal carrier census, while 10 are private fleets hauling their own goods. A private-fleet truck often has a company name on the title rather than a person’s, so check who the registered owner is and have someone with signing authority available on the day of collection.
The carrier census shows one new carrier registering in Los Altos in 2024 and one more in 2025. If you are one of those newer operators and the truck is still financed, tell us the lienholder’s name at the start so the payoff letter can be requested alongside the paperwork.
General freight, passengers and food loads
Among the cargo types Los Altos carriers report to FMCSA, general freight leads with 4 carriers, passengers follow with 2, and beverages and refrigerated food have one each. Box trucks, tractors, passenger vans and buses all fit what we collect, so describe the body and any equipment mounted on it when you first get in touch.
For a refrigerated unit, photograph the reefer’s hour meter and its data plate as well as the truck’s odometer, since the unit and the chassis carry separate serial numbers. A passenger vehicle should come with its seating capacity noted, which you can read off the registration or the manufacturer’s label by the door.
Fleet sizes stay modest: the biggest Los Altos operation in FMCSA’s carrier census runs 20 power units with 30 drivers, and the next two run 2 power units each. Selling one truck out of a small fleet is routine for us; send the VIN of the one you are parting with and keep the rest of the fleet’s paperwork separate.
Stone in the hills, rail and fuel toward the bay
Stevens Creek Quarry, a crushed-stone operation 5 miles south, and Langley Hill Quarry, 8.6 miles west, both appear in Mine Safety and Health Administration records. A dump truck or end-dump trailer working either site may be parked at the pit or at a contractor’s lot, so give us the exact location and any gate hours before we schedule a pickup.
The North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, places Newhall Yard 9.3 miles east and Redwood City Yard 10 miles north-west. A truck that shuttles to either yard can stay at its usual base in the Peninsula or South Bay, and we will meet it there.
East of town, the Energy Information Administration lists the San Jose petroleum product terminal at 10.3 miles and the Shell San Jose Terminal at 10.5 miles. A fuel or tank truck that loads there should come with its tank inspection and hazmat paperwork, which we will ask to see alongside the title.
Wholesale routes and contractor rigs in Los Altos
In 2023 the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 12,211 jobs in Los Altos, with 326 in wholesale trade and 279 in construction. Delivery trucks and contractor rigs from both trades are trucks we take, and a wholesale route truck often has a liftgate whose make and capacity you should list.
Twenty-one construction firms have an establishment in Los Altos, by the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns tally. If a contractor is closing out a dump truck, flatbed or utility body, keep the business registration with the title so the name on both papers lines up on the day of collection.
Manufacturing holds 170 jobs and transportation and warehousing 53, by the same LEHD counts. A truck tied to a small shop or warehouse here may sit in a loading bay or behind a gate, so let us know who holds the keys and whether the yard is open on weekdays.
Bridges, routes and how far drivers travel
Of the 9 Los Altos crossings in the National Bridge Inventory, not one carries a posted load limit or sits below 14 feet. Height and weight limits on those crossings are not an obstacle to reaching a parked truck, so a residential driveway or side street is a workable collection spot.
Driver counts on file with FMCSA show 72 Los Altos drivers working within 100 miles of base and 49 working beyond that. If your truck is away on a longer run, tell us where it will be parked next; we can arrange collection at that address instead of waiting for it to come home.
County farms and California rules
Santa Clara County agriculture and clean-truck rules
Santa Clara County had 825 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with mushrooms, potted flowering plants and cattle among its top products. A refrigerated box hauling mushrooms or a stake bed carrying nursery stock is a truck we will collect from the farm itself; bring the title and the farm’s name as it appears on the registration.
On the state’s clean-truck regulations, the California Air Resources Board’s rulemaking page shows the Advanced Clean Fleets drayage and high-priority fleet requirements as repealed, and a federal court filing shows enforcement of the zero-emission sales requirement paused. Whatever those rules mean for your fleet, a truck with a clean title and current registration can still be sold to us.
The questions we get asked in Los Altos
- Do you collect trucks that are parked at a quarry near Los Altos?Stevens Creek Quarry sits 5 miles south of town on Mine Safety and Health Administration records, and a truck parked there or at Langley Hill Quarry can be collected on site once you give us the gate details.
- My Los Altos truck has only ever worked inside California; which papers should I gather?Like 33 of the 37 Los Altos carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census, an intrastate truck needs only its title and current California registration to start; add the VIN and photos of the cab, frame and tires.
- Will you take a passenger van or small bus from a Los Altos operator? Two Los Altos carriers list passengers as a cargo type with FMCSA, and their vans and buses are vehicles we collect; note the seating capacity from the registration when you contact us.
