Intrastate operators lead Montague’s carrier list
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 75 active carriers based in and around Montague, and 60 of them are registered for intrastate work only, against 15 cleared to cross state lines. If your truck has stayed inside California its whole working life, have the California registration card ready with the title; it is the document we ask about first after the VIN.
Of those 75 operators, 26 run private fleets, hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire, according to the same federal carrier census. A ranch flatbed, a contractor’s dump truck or a farm tanker owned by a business that is not a trucking company is just as welcome here. Tell us what the business used it for and send photos of the cab, the frame and the bed or body.
Pole loads, beams and lowboy freight around Montague
Ten Montague-area carriers in the FMCSA census list logs, poles, beams and lumber as cargo, and another ten list machinery and large objects. A log truck with its bunks and stakes, or a lowboy tractor that moved equipment between job sites, both fit what we collect. Photograph the trailer hookup and any loader or winch mounted on the truck, and note which of them comes with the sale.
General freight leads the cargo list at 19 carriers on FMCSA’s census, ahead of the timber and machinery haulers. Day cabs and sleepers that carried mixed loads up and down the county are part of the same picture. For any of them, a short note on what the truck pulled and the trailer types it ran with saves a round of questions later.
Water and wells
Eight carriers moving well water
Eight carriers near Montague register water from wells as a cargo, the FMCSA carrier census shows. A water tender or a straight truck with a tank is something we purchase, with the tank on it. Tell us the tank’s capacity as stamped on its plate and whether the pump and hoses stay with the truck.
If the water truck still sits at a well site or a ranch yard outside town, it can stay there for collection. Give us the road or ranch name, a phone number for whoever holds the gate key, and a note on whether a tow truck can turn around at the spot.
Stock, dairy, grain
Cattle, milk and wheat on Montague’s ranch roads
Montague’s surrounding county counted 655 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with cattle, milk and wheat at the head of its list. Stock trucks, bulk milk haulers and grain trucks from those operations are trucks we buy. If the truck carries a farm registration rather than a commercial one, mention that when you reach us so we know which plates and papers to expect.
County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau records 15 construction establishments for the Montague area, beside the farm count. Dump trucks, flatbeds and service bodies from either line of work go through the same steps with us: the title, the VIN, a few clear photos and the address where the truck is parked.
Odometers and door stickers
Ten thousand miles a year, give or take, near Montague
Across 15 local carriers reporting mileage to FMCSA’s carrier census, the median is 10,000 miles a year per truck. That census also counts 42 drivers working within 100 miles of home and 65 working beyond that range. Have the current odometer reading handy when you call; it is one of the first figures we ask for.
FMCSA roadside inspection records from October 2024 to August 2026 cover 40 trucks belonging to Montague-area carriers; their median model year is 2017, and 47.5 percent carry a model year ten or more years back. Whatever the model year on yours, send the VIN and the build year on the door sticker so we can match the truck to its records.
Montague’s few multi-truck outfits
The biggest operation on FMCSA’s census list for Montague runs 15 power units with 10 drivers, the next 7 units with 3 drivers, and a third 5 units with 6 drivers. A small fleet selling several tractors at once can send one list of VINs and the yard address, and we work through them together.
New registrations stay modest here: the federal carrier census shows 3 carriers starting up in 2025 and 1 in 2024. An owner-operator who bought a single truck recently is handled the same way as a long-running outfit, with the title in the seller’s name or a lien release from the lender if one is still on record.
Montague’s nearest DMV counter sits on Fort Jones Road
The State of California Department of Motor Vehicles issues titles through its DMV field offices, and the nearest to Montague is the Yreka office at 1848 Fort Jones Rd, Yreka, 96097, 6.2 miles from town. If the title is missing, ask there about a duplicate before the sale, and bring your registration and identification.
California’s clean truck rules are in flux on the agency sources listed: the Advanced Clean Trucks Regulation is contested, enforcement of the 2036 zero-emission sales requirement for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles is paused, and the Advanced Clean Fleets drayage and high-priority fleet requirements have been repealed, per the California Air Resources Board and a federal court filing. Montague sellers can keep the truck’s engine label and emissions paperwork with the title, since those are the documents those rules point to.
The questions we get asked in Montague

- The truck is on a ranch outside Montague. Should I tow it in from the ranch gate before you come?Siskiyou County’s 655 farms, counted in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, spread trucks across a lot of open ground, and we come to the ranch. Give us the road name and a contact who can open the gate.
