Novato carriers, mostly working in-state
Of the 387 Novato carriers active in FMCSA’s census, just 18 hold interstate authority while 369 keep their trucks on California roads. If your truck has stayed inside California its whole working life, the registration and title you already hold are what we need to see; send a photo of each with your first message.
Of those Novato carriers, 123 are private fleets hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire, according to the same FMCSA census. A contractor, landscaper or Marin builder selling a truck the business owns should have the title in the company’s name ready, along with the name of whoever is allowed to sign for the business.
New registrations keep arriving: the federal carrier census shows 21 Novato carriers starting up in 2024 and 16 more in 2025. If you bought your truck recently and the title transfer is still pending with the state’s title agency, tell us at the start so the paperwork can be lined up before collection.
Freight by type
Refuse, household moves and lumber
General freight leads the cargo listings at 112 carriers in FMCSA’s census for Novato, and 38 carriers list garbage, refuse and trash. Roll-off and packer trucks from those routes usually sit in a town yard between shifts; give us that yard’s address and a gate contact so the truck can be collected where it is parked.
Nineteen local carriers in the FMCSA listings haul household goods, which means box trucks and moving vans parked at homes and small lots around town. For one of those, send photos of the box, the liftgate if fitted, and the cab, plus the VIN plate.
Logs, poles, beams and lumber appear on the cargo lists of 18 Novato carriers, the FMCSA census records. A log truck or flatbed with a loader may be kept out at a job or a ranch gate rather than in town; describe the access road when you write, so the right equipment comes for it.
FMCSA’s carrier census puts 507 Novato drivers inside a 100-mile radius and 414 beyond it. Either way, the truck can be collected wherever its run ends, whether that is a Marin yard or a stop further out; just tell us the address it will be at.
A Novato truck covers a median 11,833 miles a year, going by what 64 carriers here reported to FMCSA. Read the odometer and photograph it before you contact us, since that figure and the VIN are the first two things we ask for.
The biggest fleets based here are modest: FMCSA’s census shows one with 61 power units and 65 drivers, then fleets of 28 and 21 power units. A fleet manager letting several units go at once can send one list of VINs, titles and locations and have them handled together.
What the Marin roadside stops recorded
Roadside inspections of 177 Novato-based trucks, logged by FMCSA from August 2024 to August 2026, put the middle model year at 2017. Have the model year, make and engine listed on your registration card to hand so our questions start from the right truck.
A little over a third of those inspected trucks, 36.2 percent in FMCSA’s roadside records, carried a model year ten or more years back. Any service records or inspection reports you have kept belong in the folder you send with the title, whatever the truck’s year.
Quarries, rail yards and the Richmond port
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists San Rafael Rock Quarry, a crushed-stone operation 8.7 miles south-east of Novato, and Napa Quarry, an industrial-mineral mine 19.2 miles to the north-east. Dump trucks and end-dump tractors that have hauled from either one can be picked up at the quarry lot if the operator agrees; send the name of the person who can let us in.
To the south-east, NORTH BAY YARD at 12.8 miles and WEST CHEVRON YARD at 13.2 miles appear in the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A day cab that shuttles loads to those yards can be collected from a Richmond-side lot as easily as from Novato.
Richmond’s port lies 13.8 miles off on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics list, and the Point Potrero Marine Terminal, a roll-on/roll-off facility, sits 15.6 miles away. The Energy Information Administration places two petroleum product terminals there too, RICHMOND CA TERMINAL at 13.9 miles and RICHMOND at 14.7 miles. If your tractor works those docks and terminals, include any site access paperwork with the photos.
Construction, manufacturing and ranch work
Novato counted 24,040 jobs in 2023 in the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts, of which 2,567 were in manufacturing and 2,296 in construction. The Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns adds 310 construction establishments, so dump trucks, flatbeds and service bodies are common; tell us which body is fitted and send a photo of it.
Wholesale trade accounted for 637 Novato jobs and transportation and warehousing for 190, by the LEHD figures for 2023. A delivery straight truck from a wholesale route is usually parked at the business it serves, so the business address is where we will meet it.
Marin County had 255 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with milk, cattle and equine ranking as the top products. Livestock haulers and milk tankers kept on a ranch can be collected there; mention any gate codes or locked yards in advance.
The questions we get asked in Novato
- My dump truck sits in the San Rafael Rock Quarry lot. Will you collect it from the quarry? The quarry lot works. The Mine Safety and Health Administration places that quarry 8.7 miles south-east of Novato, and we can meet the truck on site once you give us the name of the person who can open the gate.
- The truck belongs to my Marin County ranch. Which papers and photos go in my first message?USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 255 farms in the county, with milk and cattle among its top products. Send the title, the registration card and a few photos of the truck where it sits on the ranch, plus directions in from the road.
- I run one of the private fleets in town. Can I sell under the business name?A business title is fine. FMCSA’s census counts 123 private fleets among Novato carriers, and a truck titled to a business is handled the same way; have the company title ready and name the person authorised to sign.
