Small carriers on the peninsula’s tip
FMCSA’s carrier census shows 29 active carriers based in Pacific Grove, and 28 of them are registered for intrastate work only, with one cleared to cross state lines. A truck from one of these outfits most likely spent its life on California roads, so the California title and current registration are the two papers to dig out before you call us.
Seven of those 29 are private fleets, according to the same FMCSA census, meaning they haul their own goods rather than freight for hire. If your truck belonged to a business that moved its own materials, tell us what the business did; it helps us picture the body and equipment before the photos arrive.
Pacific Grove’s outfits are one-truck operations at the top end: in FMCSA’s records the three biggest Pacific Grove carriers each list a single power unit, with one or two drivers apiece. Most sellers we hear from on the peninsula are owner-operators, so the person who signs the title is usually the person who drove the truck.
Refuse, general freight and passengers
Garbage, refuse and trash is listed by 4 local carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census, close behind the 5 that list general freight. Roll-off and rear-loader trucks are part of what we purchase. Photograph the body, the hoist or packer, and the cab, and note the body manufacturer if the plate is still readable.
Two Pacific Grove carriers move passengers and one moves household goods, per FMCSA’s census. A shuttle, a small bus or a moving van with a box body all count. For a passenger vehicle, have the seating layout and any state inspection paperwork to hand, since those are the first things we ask about.
Quarries and a landfill out toward Salinas
East of town the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Marina Landfill about 14.4 miles out, Pine Canyon Quarry for sand and gravel at 16.6 miles, and the Natividad Plant crushed-stone quarry at 19.9 miles. A dump truck or transfer truck that has worked those sites may still be parked near one of them, and that is fine; give us the site and who can let us in.
Further north-east, A R Wilson Quarry sits 24.9 miles away on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list. If your aggregate truck is stored at a quarry lot rather than at home in Pacific Grove, send the street address or the gate it is behind so the pickup can be planned around site hours.
Building trades on the peninsula
Construction accounts for 362 of the 3,825 jobs in Pacific Grove in 2023, a 9.5 percent share by the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. Contractors’ pickups with service bodies, flatbeds and small dump trucks all fall within what we buy, and send a list of the tools or racks fitted to the body along with the VIN.
Alongside those jobs sit 57 building-trade establishments, a count the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns keeps for Pacific Grove. If a truck was titled to a contracting business that has since closed, the business owner or an authorised officer signs the title; have that person available, or a letter showing who can sign for the company.
Rail yards and Monterey County farms
On the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Salinas Yard lies 15.4 miles east and Watsonville Yard 21.3 miles north-east. Trucks that ran loads to either yard can be collected from wherever they now sit between there and the coast.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,057 farms in Monterey County, led by potted flowering plants, transplants and cattle. A stake bed, a reefer box or a livestock hauler from that work belongs on your list to us; tell us whether it is parked on a ranch or at a nursery so we know what access looks like.
Advanced Clean Fleets, Clean Trucks and a paused sales mandate
The California Air Resources Board has repealed the Advanced Clean Fleets drayage, high-priority and federal fleet requirements, and it describes the Advanced Clean Trucks Regulation as amended and contested. Neither changes what you need to sell: a signed title and the truck’s VIN.
A federal court filing in the Eastern District of California shows enforcement of the zero-emission sales requirement for medium- and heavy-duty trucks is paused. If you have kept compliance letters from the state, add them to the folder with the registration; they are part of the truck’s record.
The questions we get asked in Pacific Grove
- My truck is parked at a quarry near Salinas, not in Pacific Grove. Can you still collect it from the quarry lot?Pine Canyon Quarry is about 16.6 miles east of Pacific Grove on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from sites like it. Tell us who controls the gate so a time can be set with them.
- I ran a one-truck business in Pacific Grove. Which papers should I gather before selling?FMCSA’s carrier census shows Pacific Grove’s three biggest carriers each run one power unit, so a one-truck seller is typical here. Have the California title in the name that signs, the current registration, and any service records you kept.
- Do you buy garbage trucks from the peninsula?Four Pacific Grove carriers list garbage, refuse and trash as cargo in FMCSA’s census, and refuse trucks are among those we purchase. Send photos of the packer or hoist along with the cab and the VIN.
