Silica and aggregate
Silica, stone and gravel to the north-west
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Sierra Silica Resources, an industrial-mineral mine, 3.9 miles north-west of Palermo, and Pacific Heights Pit, a crushed-stone quarry, just beyond it at 4.1 miles. A dump truck or end-dump tractor that shuttles between those two sites and town is often parked at a pit gate rather than a driveway, so tell us which gate and who holds the key.
Further out, Morris Ravine Mine works sand and gravel 9.4 miles north, while TRP Table Mountain Plant quarries crushed stone 12.3 miles north-west, both on the MSHA register. If your truck was leased onto one of those operations, bring the lease paperwork or a release letter along with the title so ownership is plain from the first call.
To the south, Hallwood Plant is a sand and gravel operation 15.9 miles from Palermo according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Aggregate haulers based between Hallwood and the Table Mountain quarry can be collected at either end; give us the address where the truck actually sits tonight.
Oroville rails, Chico tanks
Railheads and a fuel terminal up the valley
Oroville Yard, 4.2 miles north-west of Palermo, appears on the North American Rail Network maintained by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Tractors that drop and pick up near a rail yard tend to be day cabs; photograph the fifth wheel, the frame rails and the cab interior so we see the setup before we arrive.
The Energy Information Administration records a petroleum product terminal called Chico 24.5 miles north-west of town. A fuel tanker or bobtail that loads there should come with its tank inspection paperwork and its registration, since both answer questions we would otherwise have to ask.
Twelve small intrastate operations
FMCSA’s carrier census shows 12 active motor carriers based in Palermo, all 12 intrastate and none authorised for interstate work, with 2 of them registered as private fleets. That means most trucks registered here carry California plates and California paperwork only, which keeps the title transfer inside one state.
According to the same federal carrier census, 10 drivers among these carriers stay within 100 miles and 14 travel beyond it. A truck whose driver works farther afield may be parked away from Palermo when you call; that is fine, and we collect from wherever it is.
Cargo listings in FMCSA’s registrations put 2 Palermo carriers in general freight, 1 in driveaway and towaway, 1 in logs, poles, beams and lumber, and 1 in machinery and large objects. Log trucks, lowboys and towing rigs each carry their own equipment, so list the bunks, ramps, winches or wheel-lifts fitted when you describe yours.
Power units versus drivers
From three units to sixteen
One Palermo carrier on FMCSA’s census registers 16 power units with 5 drivers, another lists 6 power units and 6 drivers, and a third runs 3 power units with 2 drivers. An outfit with more trucks than drivers usually has units parked in a yard between jobs, and those can be sold one at a time or together.
If you are selling several units from a fleet like those, put each VIN, each title and the yard address on one list before we talk. The list lets us plan a single collection rather than one visit per truck.
Construction crews and farm work
Of the 436 jobs the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts place in Palermo for 2023, construction accounts for 73, or 16.7 percent, and agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting for 61, or 14 percent. Palermo has 3 construction establishments on the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns, a small base of builders for a town of 5,266.
Those builders and farm employers run flatbeds, dump bodies and service trucks; if yours did that work, the body type and any attached equipment matter as much as the chassis, so describe both. Keep the registration current through the sale so the truck can be moved legally on collection day.
Rice fields and rangeland
Rice, cattle and corn country
Butte County has 1,667 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and rice, cattle and corn lead its farm output. Grain trucks, livestock haulers and farm flatbeds from those operations are often stored in a barn or field between seasons.
When a truck lives on a farm, give us directions to the barn or field gate, not just the mailing address. Note whether the ground is firm enough for a tow truck or lowboy to reach it after rain in the rice country.
CARB status in Butte County
A federal court filing in the Eastern District of California shows enforcement of the 2036 zero-emission sales requirement paused.
The Advanced Clean Trucks Regulation is listed as contested in the Air Resources Board’s own amendment announcement. None of these change what you need to sell a diesel truck here: the title in your name, a current registration and the keys.
The questions we get asked in Palermo
- I only ever drove in California. Does that affect the paperwork? All 12 active Palermo carriers on FMCSA’s census are intrastate, so a California-only truck is the usual case here. A California title in your name and current registration are what we need.
- Our farm truck sits in a rice field outside town. Will a tow rig reach it out in the paddies?Rice leads Butte County’s 1,667 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and field and barn pickups are routine here. Send directions to the field gate and a note on whether the ground is passable.
- We have several trucks in one yard. Is one collection possible for the whole yard?FMCSA’s census lists a Palermo carrier with 16 power units and only 5 drivers, so yards holding several parked units exist here. Send us every VIN and title on one list and we plan one collection.
