Intrastate haulers on the Pismo Beach coast
FMCSA’s carrier census shows 31 active carriers based in Pismo Beach, and every one of the 31 is registered for intrastate work, with none listed as interstate. A truck registered that way carries California plates and California paperwork only, so the title and current California registration are the two documents to find before you call us.
Ten of those carriers run private fleets, hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire, according to the same FMCSA census. If your truck has spent its life delivering for your own business around Pismo Beach, tell us what the business is and where the truck is parked; a company truck often sits at a shop or yard rather than at a home address.
The fleets here are small: the three biggest in town list five, two and one power units in the federal carrier census. With an owner-operator or a two-truck outfit, the person selling is usually the person on the title, which keeps the paperwork to a signature and a few photos of the cab, frame and VIN plate.
General freight, feed and livestock
Six Pismo Beach carriers list general freight as a cargo in FMCSA’s records, and two each list farm supplies, grain, feed and hay, and livestock. Box trucks, flatbeds and tractors on general freight around the Five Cities area are the trucks we see most from here; send the body type and length with your photos so we know what is behind the cab.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 2,184 farms across San Luis Obispo County, with propagative material, cattle and transplants at the top of the list. A truck that has carried cattle or nursery stock out on a ranch road may be parked well outside town, and that is fine: give us the ranch address and a gate contact and we arrange collection there.
For a livestock or feed hauler, include photos of the trailer or body as well as the tractor, and say whether you are selling the pair together or the power unit alone. Having that settled before we talk saves a second round of questions.
Sand plants and quarries north and south of town
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Gordon Sand Co, a sand and gravel operation 13.7 miles south of Pismo Beach, and Troesh Recycling, Inc. dba RoXsand, another sand and gravel site 17.2 miles to the south-east. Dump trucks and end dumps that load at pits like these can be collected from the yard where they are kept; tell us the site and who can let us in.
North of town, Rocky Canyon Plant, a crushed-stone quarry, sits 22.5 miles away on MSHA’s mine list, and Whale Rock Quarry is 23.2 miles to the north-west. If your aggregate truck works out of one of these and is parked on site, ask the operator whether a visitor needs an escort or a site induction, and pass that on when you send us the location.
Keep any scale tickets, service logs or inspection sheets the truck has picked up at the pits. They are not required, but they show us where the truck has worked and fill in its history alongside your photos.
Guadalupe’s rail yards and fifteen bridges
The North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, places GUADALUPE YARD (UP) 14.3 miles south-east of Pismo Beach and GUADALUPE YARD (SMV) 14.9 miles out in the same direction. A truck kept near either yard is close enough that you do not need to move it toward town before we collect; give us the street address or a pin.
Fifteen bridges serve Pismo Beach in the National Bridge Inventory, and none is load-posted or under 14 feet of clearance. That gives our driver no posted weight or height limit to plan around on those spans when coming to pick up a tractor, a dump truck or a box truck in town.
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists NG ITC Camp San Luis Obisbo, a military installation, 13 miles north. If the truck is stored on or near a gated property up that way, let us know what access needs arranging in advance.
Construction work and jobs in town
Census Bureau LEHD job counts put 4,659 jobs in Pismo Beach in 2023, of which 161, or 3.5 percent, were in construction. Pismo Beach has 23 construction establishments on the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns, the contractors whose dumps and flatbeds work the town. If your truck is a contractor’s dump, flatbed or service body, the business name on the registration should match the name on the title, or we will need a signed letter from the business.
Contractors selling a truck that is still lettered or carrying tool racks can leave them on; just tell us what is mounted so the description matches what our driver finds when he arrives at the job yard or your driveway.
CARB’s three truck rules, as filed
Owners on the Central Coast asking about CARB can note three positions: CARB’s 2025 rulemaking notice records the Advanced Clean Fleets drayage, high-priority and federal fleet requirements as repealed for Pismo Beach owners and everyone else in California. CARB’s own amendment notice leaves the Advanced Clean Trucks Regulation contested, while a federal court record shows the 2036 medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission sales requirement with enforcement paused.
None of those three rules stops a Pismo Beach owner from selling a diesel truck. What we need is the California title, the registration and the VIN; if the title is lost, the state’s title agency issues a duplicate, so start that request before you contact us.
The questions we get asked in Pismo Beach
- Can you load my end dump off the Gordon Sand Co pit, south of Pismo Beach, instead of me driving it up?Gordon Sand Co sits 13.7 miles south of Pismo Beach on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from sites like that directly. Name the pit and the person at Gordon Sand or your own yard who holds the key to the entrance.
- My Pismo Beach truck has only carried California intrastate loads; can it still be sold to you?All 31 active Pismo Beach carriers in FMCSA’s census are registered intrastate, so in-state trucks are what we usually see from here. Dig out the California title and the current registration card before you send us photos.
- Can you pick up a cattle truck from a ranch outside town?San Luis Obispo County has 2,184 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with cattle among the top products, and ranch pickups are routine for us. Give us the ranch address and tell us whether the trailer is included.
