Small outfits that mostly stay inside California
Of the 52 active carriers that FMCSA’s carrier census places in Quartz Hill, 46 keep their trucks on California routes and only 6 are registered for interstate hauling. A truck from one of these in-state outfits is usually parked at the owner’s home or a small yard nearby, so give us that address and a time someone can meet us there.
Eight of the town’s carriers operate as private fleets according to the same FMCSA census, hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire. If your truck belongs to a business that moves its own materials, have the name on the title match the business that is selling, or bring a signed letter showing who can sign for it.
The biggest operations in town are tiny: FMCSA’s records show the top three running two power units, two power units and one power unit. With one or two trucks, the owner is usually the driver too, so you can send the photos, VIN and registration yourself and answer our questions directly.
General freight, car haulers and machinery
General freight is the most common cargo listed by Quartz Hill carriers, with 8 of them naming it in FMCSA’s census, so box trucks, dry vans and the tractors that pull them are what we expect to see here. Photograph the cab, the frame and every axle, plus the trailer if it is part of the sale.
Three local carriers list motor vehicles and two list driveaway or towaway work, per the FMCSA carrier census. If you own a car hauler or a tow rig, say whether the ramps, deck or wheel lift go with the truck, and send a photo of the plate on each piece so the paperwork matches what we collect.
Two carriers in town declare machinery and large objects on their FMCSA filings. A lowboy or heavy-haul tractor is often kept at a contractor’s lot rather than a driveway; tell us whose lot it is so the pickup can be arranged with them.
Aggregate and mineral sites around the valley
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Littlerock Quarry, a sand and gravel operation, 13.5 miles south-east of Quartz Hill, and a Palmdale sand and gravel site 13.6 miles east. Dump trucks and transfer rigs that work those pits can stay where they are parked; we come to the truck, so send the site name and a gate contact.
Big Iron DG Mine, a crushed-stone quarry, lies 16.6 miles north on MSHA’s register, with Acton Clay Quarries 15.4 miles south and Big Rock Creek Quarry 22.6 miles east. If your truck spent its working life hauling out of any of these, keep its scale tickets or service records with the title; they tell us where it has been.
Farther north, the Soledad Mountain Project appears in MSHA’s listings as a metal mine 24.7 miles from town. A truck stationed at a mine site may need an escort or a site pass to reach, so mention that when you first contact us.
Construction crews and the aircraft plant
In 2023 the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 1,615 jobs in Quartz Hill, and 156 of them, or 9.7 percent, were in construction. Contractors’ pickups, flatbeds and dump trucks from that work are welcome; have the registration current or the most recent renewal notice on hand.
Air Force Plant 42 is 7.5 miles east of town, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A truck that has served contracts on or around the plant is often parked off site; give us the street address rather than the plant, since we collect from where the vehicle actually sits.
Potted plants, mushroom houses and horse barns
Los Angeles County holds 766 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and the leading products there are potted flowering plants, then mushrooms, then horses. Stake-bed trucks, refrigerated straight trucks and horse-hauling rigs from that work all qualify; tell us whether any body or reefer unit comes with the chassis.
Ranch trucks are often titled to a farm or family trust rather than a person. Check whose name is on the California title before you call, and if the paper is missing, request a duplicate from the state’s title agency first so the sale is not held up.
Where the clean-truck regulations stand
The California Air Resources Board’s Advanced Clean Fleets requirements for drayage, high-priority and federal fleets have been repealed, while the Advanced Clean Trucks Regulation is listed as contested. Owners in Quartz Hill selling a diesel tractor can tell us the engine model year from the emissions label, which is what we ask for.
A federal court filing shows enforcement paused on the 2036 requirement that all new medium- and heavy-duty trucks sold be zero-emission. None of these rules stops you from selling the truck you own now; send its emissions label photo along with the VIN.
The questions we get asked in Quartz Hill
- Our dump truck sits at the Littlerock pit, not at home in Quartz Hill; can you collect it from the quarry?Littlerock Quarry is 13.5 miles south-east of town on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from the quarry itself. Send the site name and the person who controls the gate.
- I’m a single-truck owner hauling only within California. Would you buy from someone that small?Forty-six of Quartz Hill’s 52 active carriers in FMCSA’s census are intrastate-only, and most run one or two power units, so a single-truck owner is the usual seller here. Gather the California title, the current registration card and the VIN off the door jamb before you contact us.
- Our horse-hauling truck is titled to the family ranch near Quartz Hill; which of us signs the California title? With 766 farms in Los Angeles County on USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, ranch-titled trucks are common; whoever is authorised to sign for the ranch signs the title, and a missing title is replaced through California’s title agency before the sale.
