Who registers trucks at a San Carlos address
FMCSA’s carrier census shows 188 active carriers with a San Carlos address, and 180 of them operate intrastate while 8 cross state lines. For a seller that usually means a California-plated truck that stays in-state, so have the current California registration card in the cab with the title when we arrive.
Of those carriers, 63 are private fleets according to the same FMCSA census, meaning the trucks serve a business’s own goods rather than hauling for hire. If your truck belongs to a contractor, a nursery or a supply company and is titled to the business, tell us whose name is on the title so the right person signs.
New registrations keep arriving: FMCSA lists 10 carriers that first registered in San Carlos in 2025 and 6 in 2024. An owner-operator who started recently and is now selling should have the purchase paperwork and any lien release ready, since a financed truck needs the lender’s sign-off before the title moves.
Freight on the Peninsula
General freight, refuse and lumber loads
General freight is the most common cargo on San Carlos registrations, at 41 carriers in the FMCSA census, so box trucks, day cabs and straight trucks are what we expect to see. Photos of the cargo body, the liftgate if fitted, and the cab interior let us understand the truck before we come out.
Fourteen carriers here list garbage, refuse and trash, per FMCSA, and eight list logs, poles, beams and lumber. A roll-off, a rear loader or a flatbed with a lumber rack is welcome; send the body make and its serial plate along with the chassis VIN.
Seven San Carlos carriers are registered for passengers in that same census. Buses and shuttles are commercial vehicles too, and for one of those we ask for the seating count and any California inspection paperwork you hold.
Model years on FMCSA roadside reports for San Carlos trucks
Across 88 trucks inspected at the roadside between August 2024 and August 2026, FMCSA roadside inspection records put the median model year at 2019, with 29.6 percent of them ten or more model years old. Whatever the year on your title, give us the VIN and the odometer reading first; both go straight onto the paperwork.
The 33 local carriers that report annual mileage to FMCSA show a median of 10,000 miles per truck. A service log with dates, even a handwritten one, tells us what the truck has had done.
The census also counts drivers by range: 598 drivers here work within 100 miles and 516 go beyond, according to FMCSA. A truck that runs longer routes may be parked away from San Carlos when you call, and we collect it at whatever address it is sitting at.
Fleets with dozens or hundreds of units
The biggest fleet registered in San Carlos runs 292 power units and 351 drivers, by FMCSA’s carrier census, and the next runs 159 units with 190 drivers. A fleet manager clearing several units at once can send one list of VINs, plate numbers and yard addresses and we will work through it together.
A third local carrier fields 33 power units and 38 drivers in the FMCSA figures. For mid-size operators, keep each title matched to its VIN and note which trucks share a yard, so a single visit covers as many as possible.
Building trades, plants and distributors in town
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023 place 18,129 jobs in San Carlos, with 2,117 of them, or 11.7 percent, in construction. County Business Patterns counts 173 construction establishments here, so dump trucks, flatbeds and service bodies tied to building work are trucks we look for.
Manufacturing accounts for 1,183 local jobs and wholesale trade for 694 in those 2023 LEHD figures, while transportation and warehousing holds 385. If your truck delivered for a plant or a distributor, the equipment list for its body, such as a reefer unit or a crane, helps us describe it correctly on the bill of sale.
Only 3 warehousing establishments appear in County Business Patterns for San Carlos. Many trucks here are kept at a shop, a jobsite or a driveway instead, and we pick up from any of those as long as there is room to load.
Rail yards, the port and the quarry
The North American Rail Network places Redwood City Yard 3.1 miles south-east of San Carlos and South San Francisco Yard 13.3 miles north-west. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists the Redwood City port 3.3 miles east and the Port of Oakland 15.6 miles north. A drayage tractor that works those terminals can be collected where it is parked between loads.
To the south, Langley Hill Quarry, a crushed-stone operation on Mine Safety and Health Administration records, lies 11.3 miles from town. Dump trucks and transfer trailers that haul aggregate from it should come with the scale tickets or haul logs if you kept them.
Energy Information Administration records show the Brisbane petroleum product terminal 15.2 miles to the north-west. For a fuel truck or tanker, have the tank inspection certificate and the cargo tank paperwork with the title.
Nursery and mushroom growers in San Mateo County
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 250 farms in San Mateo County, and potted flowering plants, mushrooms and foliage plants lead its list of crops. Refrigerated box trucks and stake beds that carry plants to market are trucks we buy.
On a farm truck, check whether the registration is a farm plate or a standard commercial plate, and bring the title even if the truck has only moved between greenhouses. If the title has gone missing, the state’s title agency issues a duplicate, and we can tell you which form to ask for.
