Quarries and sand pits north of town
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Santa Margarita Aggregates, a sand and gravel operation 11.7 miles north-east, and the Rocky Canyon Plant, a crushed-stone quarry 14.7 miles north. A dump truck or transfer that hauls out of either one may still be parked at the pit when you decide to sell. Give us the site name and a contact who can let us through the gate, and we collect it there.
Whale Rock Quarry, 16.9 miles north-west on Mine Safety and Health Administration records, is another crushed-stone site in reach of the city. If your truck has worked the quarry roads, send photos of the bed, the frame and the cab, plus the plate number and VIN.
Sand pits and rail sidings toward Guadalupe
Down toward the Santa Barbara County line, Gordon Sand Co is a sand and gravel operation 21.4 miles south, according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration. If your truck stays down there between loads, it does not need to come up to San Luis Obispo for the sale; tell us the yard address and we arrange collection on site.
The North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, places the Union Pacific Guadalupe Yard 21.6 miles south and the Santa Maria Valley line’s Guadalupe Yard 22.2 miles south. A tractor that shuttles loads to and from those rail sidings can be picked up wherever it is kept. Have the title and current registration in the same name before we arrive, so the paperwork matches at handover.
Intrastate haulers, reefers and machinery trailers
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 305 active carriers based in San Luis Obispo, with 286 operating intrastate, 18 interstate and 93 operating as private fleets. A truck that only ever ran California routes still sells the same way: we need the title, the registration and the VIN to start.
General freight is the top cargo type, carried by 71 carriers in the FMCSA census, followed by machinery and large objects at 23, fresh produce at 15 and farm supplies at 14. Tell us what the truck pulled, whether a lowboy, a reefer or a dry van, and whether the trailer goes with it or stays behind.
Under the same federal carrier census, 734 drivers here work within 100 miles of base and 667 go farther out. If your truck is out on a long run when you contact us, tell us when it will be back home and where it will be parked.
Fleets and their trucks
Small outfits and mid-size fleets alike
The three biggest fleets registered in the city run 77, 68 and 53 power units, according to FMCSA’s carrier census. If you are selling several units at once, send a list with each VIN and where each truck is parked, and we can plan one trip that covers the lot.
Among the 45 local carriers reporting mileage to FMCSA, the median comes to 10,000 miles per truck. Have the odometer reading ready when you call; it is one of the first things we ask for, alongside the year, make and model.
New registrations keep coming too: FMCSA records 12 new carriers in 2025 and 9 in 2024. If you started up recently and are now selling, the title may still show a lender; tell us who holds it so the payoff and release can be arranged.
Inspection records
Roadside checks on San Luis Obispo trucks
FMCSA roadside inspection records cover 179 trucks checked here from August 2024 to August 2026, putting their median model year at 2020 and the share aged ten years or more at 15.1 percent. Send the build year of your truck along with its VIN when you first get in touch.
If you kept the roadside inspection reports or any annual inspection paperwork, hand them over with the title. A recent registration card and service invoices also help us identify the exact truck and its equipment.
Jobs, builders and ranches around the city
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts record 32,759 jobs here in 2023, including 1,588 in manufacturing, 1,431 in construction, 618 in wholesale trade and 486 in transportation and warehousing. Box trucks and flatbeds serving those shops and job sites are trucks we purchase; tell us the body type and length when you get in touch.
Builders are well represented locally, with 160 construction establishments counted by the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. A contractor’s dump truck or service body can be collected from the job site or the yard, so long as someone there can hand over the keys.
In the USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, San Luis Obispo County carries 2,184 farms, led by propagative material, cattle and transplants. A ranch truck or livestock hauler parked out on the property can be collected there; send directions if the gate or road is hard to find.
Load limits, clearances and clean-truck rules
The National Bridge Inventory lists 59 bridges in and around the city, none of them load-posted and none under 14 feet of clearance. Tell us the exact pickup address and whether a tow truck can reach the spot where yours is parked.
The California Air Resources Board has repealed its Advanced Clean Fleets drayage and high-priority fleet requirements, and enforcement of the zero-emission truck sales requirement is paused under a federal court ruling. If you have questions about these rules for your truck, have the engine model year and the registration on hand when you call.
The questions we get asked in San Luis Obispo
- Our end dump sits at the Santa Margarita sand and gravel pit; will you pick it up from the pit itself? We will: the Mine Safety and Health Administration places Santa Margarita Aggregates 11.7 miles north-east of San Luis Obispo, and the pickup happens right there. Let us know the operator who controls access to the pit so the visit is booked through them.
- Our tractor stays down by the Guadalupe rail yards; must we haul it up to San Luis Obispo first? There is no need, since the North American Rail Network places the Guadalupe yards about 22 miles south of the city, and we collect from wherever the truck is parked down there.
- Where do I replace a missing California truck title before selling?Request a duplicate from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the state’s title agency, and tell us once you have applied so the collection can be planned around it.
