San Martin outfits on intrastate authority
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 141 active carriers with a San Martin address, and 137 of them operate intrastate only, against 4 registered for interstate work. A truck sold from here is almost always on California plates, so keep the current California registration card with the title when you contact us.
Forty-four of those San Martin carriers are private fleets moving their own goods rather than hauling for hire, according to the same FMCSA census. When the truck belongs to a farm, nursery or contractor, the business named on the title is the party that signs it over, so check that name before we schedule anything.
On FMCSA’s carrier census the biggest local operation has 16 power units and 16 drivers, and the two after it each run 9 trucks with 7 drivers. Outfits that size usually keep a maintenance file per unit; send it with photos of the cab, the frame and the VIN plate.
Freight, produce, machinery and refuse
General freight leads the cargo classes here, with 38 San Martin carriers listing it in FMCSA’s census. Dry vans, box trucks and day cabs on that work are the units we expect to collect from yards and driveways in town; give us the VIN and body type first.
Nine carriers in town are registered for machinery and large objects and seven for fresh produce, the FMCSA census shows. If yours is a lowboy tractor or a reefer unit, note the trailer or refrigeration equipment that goes with it and photograph the reefer’s data plate.
Six San Martin carriers haul garbage, refuse and trash under FMCSA registration. For a packer or roll-off, the body maker and model matter as much as the chassis, so include a clear shot of the body’s own plate.
Inspection stops, odometers and new outfits
Between September 2024 and August 2026, inspectors stopped 86 trucks belonging to San Martin outfits, and FMCSA roadside inspection records put their median at the 2017 model year. Of those inspected, 40.7 percent were ten or more model years old, the same FMCSA inspection records show. Whatever the year of yours, the title and the odometer reading are the two things we ask for first.
Among the 29 local carriers that reported mileage, the median was 15,000 miles per truck a year in FMCSA’s carrier census. Write down the exact odometer figure when you take your photos, so the number on the paperwork and the number in the picture agree.
San Martin gained eight newly registered carriers in 2025 after four the year before, FMCSA’s census records. If you started your outfit recently and the truck still carries a lender’s lien, have the lienholder’s name and contact ready, since the title release comes from them.
Job sites, mushroom houses and nurseries
Of the 1,479 jobs sited in San Martin in 2023, the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts place 388 in construction, a 26.2 percent share. Sixty-four building and site-work firms appear for the San Martin area in the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. Dump trucks, flatbeds and water trucks from those firms are often parked at a job site; tell us the site address and who controls access.
Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting supply 186 local jobs, 12.6 percent of the total in LEHD’s 2023 figures, and wholesale trade supplies another 134. Santa Clara County had 825 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, led by mushrooms, potted flowering plants and cattle. A truck working a mushroom house, nursery or cattle ground can stay on the property; we collect it there.
Manufacturing holds 76 of the jobs in town on the Census Bureau’s LEHD figures for 2023. A stake-bed or box truck that runs parts and finished goods for a plant should come with its registration in the company’s name and a contact who can release it from the lot.
Gilroy Yard and the quarries to the south
Gilroy Yard sits 5.7 miles south of San Martin on the North American Rail Network, and Watsonville Yard lies 14.8 miles to the south-west. Tractors that shuttle loads to and from those rail yards can be collected wherever they are parked between runs; give us the yard or lot address.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists A R Wilson Quarry, a crushed-stone operation, 13 miles south, and Olive Springs Quarry 18.2 miles west. Plant 25 and Southside Sand And Gravel, sand and gravel operations 16.4 and 24.6 miles to the south-east, appear in the same MSHA records. For a dump truck or transfer unit that hauls aggregate from those pits, photograph the bed, the hoist and the tarp system along with the cab.
The questions we get asked in San Martin
- My end-dump sits at a lot by A R Wilson Quarry; does it have to come up to San Martin first?A R Wilson Quarry is 13 miles south of town on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect the truck where it sits. Give us the lot owner’s name and a phone number for whoever holds the quarry-side gate key.
- I run one reefer hauling produce around California; would you take a truck like mine from San Martin?Seven San Martin carriers list fresh produce in FMCSA’s census, and 137 of the town’s 141 carriers work intrastate only, so a California-plated produce truck is squarely what we collect here. Start with the VIN, a photo of the reefer unit and the California title.
- Our mushroom farm owns the truck, not a trucking company; which of us puts a signature on the California title?FMCSA’s census counts 44 private fleets among San Martin carriers, many of them businesses hauling their own goods. Whoever is named on the title signs it, so if that is the farm’s business name, an authorised officer of the business signs for it.
