Eight hundred twenty carriers, most of them staying in-state
Of the 820 South El Monte carriers active in FMCSA’s carrier census, a lopsided 753 keep their freight inside California and just 66 hold interstate authority. For a seller that usually means the tractor or box truck is parked somewhere in the valley, not out on a long run, so we can arrange to see it where it already sits.
Factory and wholesale owners moving their own stock make up 219 of the town’s carriers, a private-fleet tally that also comes from FMCSA’s census. If your truck belongs to a manufacturer or wholesaler rather than a for-hire outfit, have the company name on the title match the name on the registration before you call us; that match is the first thing we check.
The FMCSA census also shows 619 carrier filings in South El Monte keeping drivers within 100 miles, while 789 report driving beyond that radius. Tell us which kind of work your unit did, local yard moves or regional lanes, and send the most recent service record so we can read its history alongside the photos.
General freight, chilled loads and produce
General freight is the cargo listed by 253 South El Monte carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census, which points to dry vans, box trucks and day cabs as the common units around town. Photograph the cab, the frame and the trailer coupling in daylight, and note the VIN plate in one of the shots.
Refrigerated food is listed by 35 local carriers, meat by another 35 and fresh produce by 34, again per the FMCSA carrier census. If your truck pulled a reefer or carries its own refrigeration unit, include the unit’s make and its hour meter reading in what you send, since the box is part of what we are looking at.
Smaller operators keep arriving too: the FMCSA census records 35 new carriers registering here in 2024 and 22 in 2025. An owner-operator who started recently and now wants out of the truck can still sell it to us; bring the title, or the lienholder’s name and contact if a loan is still open.
Inspection-lane snapshot of the valley’s tractors and box trucks
Across the 392 South El Monte trucks pulled in for roadside checks from late August 2024 to late August 2026, the midpoint model year sits at 2018, per FMCSA roadside inspection records. That figure is simply where the local fleet sits; we buy across model years, so tell us yours along with the engine make.
Just under three in ten of those valley trucks, 29.3 percent in FMCSA’s roadside inspection tallies, carried a model year at least a decade back. Whether yours is a recent unit or an older one, the paperwork we ask for is the same: title, current registration, and any inspection reports you kept.
FMCSA’s census figures on mileage, drawn from 111 local carriers that reported it, put the median at 20,000 miles per truck a year. Read the odometer before you contact us and include a photo of the dash, so the number on the title paperwork and the one on the gauge agree.
Gravel pits, terminals and rail ramps around town
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Durbin Plant, a sand and gravel operation 4.5 miles north-east of South El Monte, and the Peck Road Gravel Pit 4.9 miles in the same direction. Dump trucks and end-dump tractors that worked those pits can stay parked where they are; give us the address and a contact who can let us onto the lot.
About 5.2 miles south-west, the Energy Information Administration places a petroleum product terminal at Montebello, and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics puts the Savage Service Corp liquid bulk terminal 6.3 miles to the south. If your tractor pulled tankers between those sites, list the trailer types it hauled and any tank-related inspection paperwork you have.
For container work, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists the Commerce rail intermodal ramp 7.1 miles south-west and the City of Industry ramp 7.2 miles east. The North American Rail Network from the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics adds Pico Rivera Yard at 6.1 miles and Valla Yard at 6.4 miles; a day cab that ran drayage off any of them should come with its port or ramp access records if you still hold them.
Plant work, wholesale lanes and the town’s builders
Manufacturing accounts for 4,537 of the 15,468 jobs located in South El Monte in 2023, which the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put at 29.3 percent. Box trucks and straight trucks that served shop floors here are units we purchase; send photos of the liftgate if it has one and the body length.
Wholesale trade holds 2,555 local jobs, or 16.5 percent, while transportation and warehousing hold 362, both in the Census Bureau’s LEHD figures for 2023. County Business Patterns, also from the Census Bureau, counts 7 warehousing establishments in town, so a truck that moved goods between a wholesaler and its customers may well be parked at a loading dock; tell us which one.
Construction employs 1,174 people here per the LEHD job counts, and the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns lists 140 construction establishments. Contractors selling a flatbed, a dump body or a water truck should gather the title and registration for the truck and note any equipment mounted on it.
Reaching your lot
Bridges, county farms and access
South El Monte’s 7 bridges carry no load postings and none clears less than 14 feet, going by the Federal Highway Administration’s National Bridge Inventory. Tell us if your truck is behind a gate, inside a building or on a tight lot, since those details shape the collection more than the roads do.
Across Los Angeles County, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture records 766 farms, with potted flowering plants, mushrooms and equine operations at the top of the list. A truck that delivered nursery stock or hauled for a horse property can be collected from the farm itself; share the location and gate hours.
The questions we get asked in South El Monte
- Our dump truck is still at a yard by the Peck Road Gravel Pit - does it have to come into South El Monte first? The Peck Road Gravel Pit is 4.9 miles north-east of South El Monte by the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s listing, and we collect from that area directly. Give us the yard address and who holds the gate key.
- Our South El Monte plant keeps a handful of its own trucks; can just one of them be sold?South El Monte has 219 private fleets in FMCSA’s carrier census, and selling a single unit from one is common for us. Have the title in the business name and someone authorised to sign for the company.
- What should I send first for a reefer truck? With 35 refrigerated food carriers in town per FMCSA’s carrier census, reefers are a familiar request here. Send the VIN, the odometer photo, the refrigeration unit’s make and hour reading, and the title status.
- The title for my South El Monte truck has gone missing - where do I get a replacement?South El Monte trucks are titled through California’s title agency, so a replacement title comes from that office. Start that request and tell us at the outset, and we can talk through the rest of the sale while it is processed.
