Sixty-six carriers on a small-city roster
Of the 66 active carriers FMCSA’s carrier census places in South Pasadena, 54 hold intrastate authority and 12 run interstate. If your truck stayed inside California under an intrastate number, bring the registration and the title in the name shown on that authority so the paperwork lines up at pickup.
Seventeen of those carriers are private fleets moving their own goods, according to the same FMCSA census. A contractor or wholesaler selling a box truck or tractor from a private fleet should have the title, the current registration and any service records from the shop that kept it on the road.
The census gives the biggest operation here 34 power units and 34 drivers, and the next two run 5 trucks each with 3 drivers. Selling several units at once from a fleet of that size is fine; send a list of VINs and where each truck is parked, and we will plan one collection around them.
General freight, passengers and containers
Eighteen South Pasadena carriers list general freight as their cargo in FMCSA’s census, seven carry passengers and four haul intermodal containers. Buses and passenger vans count too: have the seating capacity and the title ready, along with photos of the interior and the exterior.
Two local carriers are registered for driveaway and towaway work, per the FMCSA census. If the truck you are selling is a tow tractor or a unit that delivered other vehicles, tell us what equipment is mounted on it so we know what we are collecting.
New registrations picked up recently: FMCSA records show 7 carriers starting here in 2025 against 2 in 2024. A newer owner-operator may still hold the title under a lender; tell us the lienholder’s name up front and we will work through the payoff paperwork with you.
Rail yards and container ramps toward downtown
The North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, places Aurant Yard 2.5 miles south of South Pasadena and the Metrolink Shops Yard 4.3 miles west. A drayage tractor parked near either yard can stay where it is; send us the address and the name of whoever controls the lot.
Container trucks working the city’s four intermodal carriers have two ramps close by, with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics listing Los Angeles - Lamar Street (LATC) 5.2 miles south-west and the East Washington Boulevard ramp 7.1 miles south. For a day cab that pulled boxes off those ramps, the VIN, the odometer reading and a photo of the fifth wheel are the first things to send.
Terminals in Montebello, Vernon and the Peck Road pit
The Energy Information Administration lists petroleum product terminals at Montebello, 7.4 miles south, and at Vernon, 7.9 miles south-west, while the Bureau of Transportation Statistics adds the Ventura Transfer Company liquid bulk terminal 8.7 miles south. If a tanker tractor you own served those sites, list the terminals it loaded at and keep any inspection reports with the title.
East of town by 8.8 miles, the Mine Safety and Health Administration records the Peck Road Gravel Pit as a sand and gravel operation. Dump trucks and transfer units that hauled from a pit like this are on our list; photograph the body, the frame and the cab, and tell us whether the truck is parked at the pit or at home.
Clearances and how far trucks travel
Ten bridges in South Pasadena appear in the National Bridge Inventory, none of them load posted, and one sits under 14 feet: State Route 110 over the Arroyo Seco ramp, at 13 ft 10 in. Tell us your truck’s height if it is parked on the far side of that structure, so the collection route avoids it.
Among local carriers in the FMCSA census, 74 drivers work within 100 miles and 59 go beyond it, and the 10 carriers reporting mileage show a median of 25,000 miles per truck. Most trucks here stay close to home, so we usually collect from a driveway, yard or job site in or near the city.
Jobs and permits
Work that keeps trucks in the city
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 9,287 jobs in South Pasadena for 2023, with 165 in wholesale trade, 152 in construction, 144 in transportation and warehousing and 128 in manufacturing. Each of those lines runs vans, flatbeds or straight trucks, and any of them can be sold to us with a clear title and current registration.
South Pasadena has 33 construction establishments on the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns tally. A contractor retiring a work truck should gather the title, the registration card and any California inspection paperwork before calling; a lost title is replaced through the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
The questions we get asked in South Pasadena
- A drayage tractor of mine sits by Aurant Yard; can it be picked up from that lot?Aurant Yard is 2.5 miles south of South Pasadena on the North American Rail Network, and we pick up from the lot where the truck sits. Send the yard address plus the name and phone of whoever controls access there.
- Is the low bridge over the Arroyo Seco ramp an issue for pickup? The National Bridge Inventory lists that crossing over the Arroyo Seco ramp at 13 ft 10 in, the only one of the city’s ten bridges under 14 feet. Share your truck’s height and parking spot, and the pickup route is planned around it.
- I run a passenger van company here; are vans and buses part of what you purchase?Seven South Pasadena carriers list passengers as their cargo in FMCSA’s census, and their buses and vans are trucks we buy. Send the VIN, seating capacity, title and photos to start.
