Three mine sites up the coast from campus
Ellwood Pit, which the Mine Safety and Health Administration records as an industrial-mineral mine, lies 3.4 miles north-west of the campus community. A dump truck or water truck that has worked that pit can be collected from wherever it is parked, whether at a yard near the pit or a driveway near campus. Send us the street address and a note on whether a tow truck can reach it.
Bee Rock Quarry, a crushed-stone operation 12 miles north-west, appears on the same Mine Safety and Health Administration register. Aggregate haulers that load at a quarry like that usually carry a site log or a scale ticket trail; keep a few with the truck and take photos of the bed, the hoist and the cab before you reach out.
Further out, at 21.3 miles north-west, the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Solvang Plant as a sand and gravel operation. If your truck spends its week on that run up the coast and inland toward the plant, tell us where it sits on the weekend, since that is often the easiest place for us to pick it up.
Cut flowers and potted plants in the county
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,359 farms in Santa Barbara County, with cut flowers and cultivated greens at the top of the list. Box trucks and refrigerated straight trucks that move cut stems from greenhouse to cooler are vehicles we buy, so dig out the reefer unit’s service records before you call.
Potted flowering plants and transplants follow cut flowers in the county’s leading crops, according to that same agricultural census. A stake-bed or flatbed that carries nursery trays between growers spends much of its life on farm roads, so give us the gate code or the name of the ranch so we can find it.
Farm trucks in this county are sometimes registered to a ranch entity rather than a person. Check that the name on the California title matches the seller who will sign it, and if the title has gone missing, California’s title agency is where a duplicate is requested.
Jobs based in the campus community
For 2023, the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts place 4,272 jobs in University of California-Santa Barbara. Service vans, delivery box trucks and utility bodies that support those workplaces are part of what we purchase.
If your vehicle was assigned to a contractor working on or around campus, gather the registration card, the VIN plate photo and any maintenance printouts. Those three items answer most of what we need to know before collection.
Three state truck rules and a coastal campus
The California Air Resources Board’s Advanced Clean Fleets requirements for drayage, high-priority and federal fleets have been repealed, per the board’s own rulemaking notice. The Advanced Clean Trucks Regulation is listed as contested after the board approved amendments to it.
A federal court filing has paused enforcement of the 2036 requirement that all medium- and heavy-duty sales be zero-emission. Owners near campus weighing whether to sell a diesel truck can do so under the current status of each of these three rules, and we will ask for the engine model year on the emissions label.
Getting ready before pickup
Have the title, current registration and a set of photos covering all four sides, the dash and the VIN. If a lender still holds the title, tell us who it is so the lien release can be arranged.
Trucks around the Santa Barbara County coast are often parked in tight lots near the campus. Let us know the clearance at the gate and whether the keys will be left on site, and we will plan the collection to fit.
The questions we get asked in University of California-Santa Barbara
- Do you collect trucks from the quarries north-west of campus?Ellwood Pit at 3.4 miles and Bee Rock Quarry at 12 miles, both on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, are within reach, and we collect from the site or from wherever the truck is parked.
- I haul flowers for a grower in Santa Barbara County. Will you take the refrigerated box truck I use for stems and greens? With 1,359 farms counted by USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture and cut flowers leading the county’s crops, refrigerated straight trucks are a regular part of what we buy here; bring the reefer service records.
- Can I still sell a diesel truck in California?California’s Advanced Clean Fleets drayage and high-priority fleet requirements were repealed, per the California Air Resources Board, and the 2036 zero-emission sales requirement has its enforcement paused, so a diesel truck can be sold to us.
- Where does a seller near campus go for a replacement California truck title?A lost California title for a truck kept near University of California-Santa Barbara is replaced through California’s title agency; start that request before scheduling pickup.
