Intrastate haulers and private fleets on the Black Forest roster
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 46 active carriers based in Black Forest, and 43 of them run intrastate only, with just 3 crossing state lines. A truck from one of these outfits usually spends its working life inside Colorado, so expect us to collect it from the property it works out of rather than from a terminal or yard elsewhere.
Thirty-three of the Black Forest carriers on FMCSA’s census move their own goods as private fleets rather than hauling for hire. If your truck belongs to a builder, a ranch or a family business rather than a for-hire outfit, have the Colorado title in the name of whoever is selling, and if the business owns it, a signature from someone who can sign for that business.
The two biggest fleets registered here run 26 and 24 power units, with 19 and 11 drivers respectively, on FMCSA’s census; the next one down has 4. Selling several trucks from one fleet at once is no harder than one: send a list of VINs and where each unit is parked, and we can plan the collections together.
Log bunks, lowboys and box vans
General freight is the cargo most often declared, by 31 of the town’s carriers in FMCSA’s census, while 15 list machinery and large objects and 10 list logs, poles, beams and lumber. Log trucks, lowboy tractors and box trucks are all part of what we purchase, and a photo of the truck with its body or trailer coupled helps us see the setup you run.
Seven carriers here declare motor vehicles as cargo, the FMCSA census shows. A car hauler or rollback from Black Forest is welcome too; tell us whether the deck or headache rack comes with the truck, so the collection crew knows what they are taking.
Seven local carriers reported mileage to FMCSA, and their median comes to 12,000 miles a truck per year. That figure is simply how these outfits report their trucks’ annual use; give us the odometer reading along with the VIN and we will work from those.
What the inspection stations saw on Black Forest trucks
Roadside inspectors checked 55 trucks from Black Forest carriers from October 2024 through August 2026, and FMCSA’s inspection records show a median model year of 2017 among them. Have the model year, engine make and transmission to hand when you get in touch, since those are the first details we ask for.
Just under half of that group, 47 percent in FMCSA roadside inspection records, carried a model year ten or more years back. Whatever year yours is, send any inspection reports or service records you have kept along with the photos, so the truck’s history reaches us in writing.
Builders and contractors around the forest
In 2023, building work filled 373 of Black Forest’s 1,983 jobs, an 18.8 percent share on the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. Dump trucks, flatbeds and water trucks from building work are trucks we buy, and if yours is parked on a job site, tell us who controls access so the pickup can be arranged with them.
The area holds 123 construction establishments, a figure from the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns that covers framers, excavators and every other trade with a truck in the yard. If you run one of those firms and own a single truck outright, the title, a photo ID and the keys are usually all the paperwork needed on collection day.
Transportation and warehousing employ 160 people here and wholesale trade another 103, the LEHD job counts for 2023 show. If your truck delivers for one of those businesses, the registration and the title should name the same owner; if they differ, mention it early and we will tell you what paperwork closes the gap.
Gravel pits, bases and the fuel terminal
Amrize Solberg Pit, a sand and gravel operation, lies about 12.5 miles south-east of Black Forest, and Crusher 4 is 19 miles to the south-west, both on Mine Safety and Health Administration listings. A dump truck or end-dump tractor that hauls aggregate out of either pit can be collected where it is parked, at the pit or at your place.
The Energy Information Administration lists a petroleum product terminal at Colorado Springs, 19.5 miles south of town. If your fuel truck or tanker works out of that terminal, tell us whether the tank is empty and what product it last carried, and send the tank’s inspection paperwork if you have it.
USAF Academy Site 2 is 11.2 miles to the west and Peterson Space Force Base is 16.6 miles to the south, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Trucks that serve contracts at either base sometimes stay parked near the gate, so give us an address we can reach without base access, or arrange to have the truck brought out.
Cattle, horses and alpacas in El Paso County
Cattle lead the livestock list across El Paso County’s 1,207 farms, followed by horses and then alpacas, in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. Stock trucks, flatbeds hauling hay and tractors that pull livestock trailers off these properties are all trucks we take, and we collect from the ranch itself.
A ranch truck here may be parked in a barn or well down a private lane. Send a pin or directions to where it is parked, note any gate code or locked gate, and tell us whether the ground is firm enough for a tow truck to reach it.
Getting a Black Forest title and emissions label ready
If the Colorado title is lost, apply to the state’s title agency for a duplicate before the sale, and start that request early if you can. Tell us as well if a lender is still listed on it; a lien release has to travel with the title.
The Colorado Secretary of State’s rule register lists the Advanced Clean Trucks Rule and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Rule from the Air Quality Control Commission as in force. Neither stops you from selling the truck you have now; keep the emissions label legible and send a photo of it with the others.
The questions we get asked in Black Forest
- Could you pick up an end-dump that is still sitting at Amrize Solberg Pit rather than at my house?Amrize Solberg Pit sits about 12.5 miles south-east of Black Forest on Mine Safety and Health Administration listings, and we can collect the truck there. Give us the name of whoever controls the pit gate, and the collection is set up with that person.
- Would you take a log truck that has hauled poles and beams around Black Forest?Ten Black Forest carriers declare logs, poles, beams and lumber as cargo in FMCSA’s census, and their trucks are among the ones we purchase. Send the VIN, the odometer reading and photos showing the bunks and the cab.
- Our stock truck is parked far up a private lane on the ranch. Can a tow truck still reach it out there?El Paso County has 1,207 farms on USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and trucks on them are often parked well off the paved road. Send directions, any gate code and a note on the lane with your photos. We plan the collection at the ranch.
- Our Black Forest truck is titled to the family business rather than to me personally. What signature does the sale need?Thirty-three of the 46 carriers in Black Forest are private fleets on FMCSA’s census, so business-owned trucks are common here. Someone with authority to sign for the company signs the title, and we will tell you what else the sale needs.
