The gravel pits beside Clifton
Crusher 2, a sand and gravel pit on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s roll, works the ground 1.7 miles south-west of Clifton’s center. A dump truck or end-dump tractor that has spent its shifts between that pit and job sites around the valley is one we would collect from a yard on this side of town, so give us the street address where it is parked.
Suncore West Colorado, another sand and gravel operation on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, lies 4.2 miles west toward Grand Junction. If your truck hauled aggregate out of there, photograph the bed, the hoist and the cab, and keep the title in the glovebox file so it is ready when we arrive.
Nearly a quarter of the jobs in Clifton are in construction: 505 construction jobs out of 2,199 in total for 2023, or 23 percent, per the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. Mixers, dumps and lowboys tied to that work can be sold from wherever the crew left them; just tell us whether the truck sits on a site or at home.
East Yard, the Grand Junction yard and the fuel terminals west of town
Two rail yards appear on the North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics: East Yard, 3.8 miles west of Clifton, and the Grand Junction yard at 6.1 miles. A tractor that has shuttled loads to and from those sidings can stay where it is parked; send us the VIN, the registration and a few clear photos of the cab and frame.
According to the Energy Information Administration, the Grand Jct Plant petroleum product terminal is 5.9 miles west, and the Fruita terminal is 14.3 miles out along the same direction. If your truck pulled a fuel tanker between those racks, keep its tank inspection paperwork with the title and hand it over with the truck at pickup.
General freight, lowboys and log trucks
General freight is the cargo line for 39 of the 108 active Clifton-based outfits on FMCSA’s carrier census. Box trucks, straight trucks and dry-van tractors from those outfits are all trucks we buy, so tell us the body type and the axle setup when you get in touch.
Machinery and large objects show up for 25 carriers in the same federal census, logs, poles, beams and lumber for 15, and motor vehicles for 14. A lowboy tractor, a log truck or a car hauler from Clifton is something we will look at; include photos of the trailer coupling and the deck if the trailer is part of the sale.
New registrations have been steady: FMCSA’s carrier census shows four new carriers in Clifton in 2025 and four in 2024. If you started an outfit here and are now selling a unit, your operating authority paperwork and the truck’s registration are the two documents to pull together first.
Mostly intrastate, mostly short-haul
Of the 108 Clifton carriers in the FMCSA census, 93 run intrastate only and 15 cross state lines. A truck that never left Colorado still needs its Colorado title and current registration at pickup, and those are the papers we ask to see before anything else.
Drivers working within 100 miles number 151 across these carriers, against 97 who go farther, as FMCSA’s census records it. Short-haul trucks are usually parked close to home at night, so a driveway or shop lot in Clifton is a perfectly good place for us to meet the truck.
Seventeen Clifton carriers give FMCSA a yearly mileage figure, and their median truck covers 25,000 miles a year. Have the current odometer reading handy when you call; it is one of the first figures we write down.
Private fleets and small operators
FMCSA’s census shows 55 of Clifton’s carriers operating as private fleets, hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire. A contractor or farm business selling one of its own trucks needs the business name on the title to match the person signing, so check that before we schedule the pickup.
In FMCSA’s carrier census, the three largest Clifton fleets run 30, 7 and 6 power units, with 16, 4 and 5 drivers. Whether you are clearing one unit or several from a lot that size, list each VIN and where each truck is sitting so we can plan one visit.
Thirty-three construction firms keep an address around Clifton, according to the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. Owners of equipment-hauling trucks in those firms can send the title, registration and service records together, which keeps the paperwork in one place.
Clifton-registered carriers had 34 of their trucks pulled over for roadside checks from October 2024 through August 2026; in FMCSA roadside inspection records, half of those were built in 2020 or later. Tell us the year, make and model up front, since that is how we identify the truck before we see it.
Roughly 41 percent of those Clifton trucks, by FMCSA’s roadside inspection records, carried a model year ten or more years back. Older and newer units are both trucks we buy, and a copy of the most recent inspection report is a useful thing to include with your photos.
Ranch trucks, warehouse jobs and emissions rules
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 2,353 farms in Mesa County, with cattle, corn and sheep at the top of the list. Cattle haulers, grain trucks and farm flatbeds parked on a ranch outside Clifton can be collected right there; send a pin or directions if the gate is off a county road.
Wholesale trade holds 193 jobs in Clifton and transportation and warehousing 105, according to the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023. Delivery trucks from those employers are welcome too; the registration card and the title are what we need from the company.
Two Colorado emissions rules for heavy trucks, Advanced Clean Trucks and Heavy-Duty Low NOx, are in force through the state’s Air Quality Control Commission. If you have emissions paperwork for your truck, put it with the title so it goes with the sale.
The questions we get asked in Clifton
- Will you pick up a gravel truck at a pit near Clifton?Crusher 2 is 1.7 miles south-west of town and Suncore West Colorado 4.2 miles west, both listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and we collect trucks from sites like those. Tell us which pit or yard the truck is in and who can let us in.
- Is a Clifton truck that never left Colorado a problem to sell?Ninety-three of Clifton’s 108 carriers in FMCSA’s census are intrastate only, so a Colorado-only truck is the usual case here. Have the Colorado title and current registration ready and we will handle the rest.
- Can a Clifton log hauler with its bunks be sold together?Fifteen Clifton carriers list logs, poles, beams and lumber in FMCSA’s carrier census, and those trucks are ones we buy. Send photos of the truck and any bunks or trailer included in the sale.
- What should a private-fleet owner have ready?Clifton has 55 private fleets in FMCSA’s census, and for them the title must be in the business name that signs the sale. Bring the title, registration and any service records for each unit.
