Trucks at work on Sanibel
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 1,910 jobs on Sanibel in 2023, and 165 of them, 8.6 percent, were in construction. If your dump truck, flatbed or box truck spends its week on island job sites, tell us which ones; that is where we will look for it when we come to collect.
Wholesale trade accounted for 57 island jobs, or 3 percent, in that same 2023 LEHD release from the Census Bureau. A delivery straight truck that restocks island shops is just as welcome as a dump truck; send the VIN, a photo of each side and a clear shot of the dash.
Island builders
Sanibel’s building trade and its trucks
County Business Patterns, from the Census Bureau, counts 20 construction establishments on Sanibel. A small contractor here often keeps one or two trucks, and if yours is sitting in a yard behind a shop or a home on the island, give us that street address and we plan the pickup there.
Have the Florida title in the owner’s name ready, along with the current registration. If the business owns the truck rather than you personally, tell us whose name is on the title so the paperwork is right the first time.
The quarries off the island
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Alico Road Quarry, a crushed-stone operation 22.1 miles east of Sanibel, and the Fort Myers Mine, also crushed stone, 24.2 miles east. Aggregate trucks that run between those pits and island sites are trucks we buy, whether the cab is parked on Sanibel or back on the mainland.
If your dump truck or tractor and end-dump trailer worked those two quarries, let us know which one and keep any scale tickets or service records with the truck. Records like those answer questions before we have to ask them.
Island spans and truck heights
Of the 12 bridges the Federal Highway Administration’s National Bridge Inventory records for Sanibel, none is load-posted and none has a clearance under 14 feet. For a seller, that means a tall box or a loaded tractor at an island address is one we can reach without routing around a restricted span.
Tell us the height of the truck if it carries a body or a rack, and whether the driveway or lot has a gate or a tight turn. Those two details are what we plan a Sanibel collection around.
Grain, cattle and hive trucks off the island
Corn leads the Lee County crop list, ahead of cattle and honey, across the 813 farms tallied by USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. A grain truck, a cattle hauler or a flatbed that moves hives and supplies is a truck we purchase, wherever in the county it is kept.
Farm trucks often stay registered to a family member or the farm itself. Check the name on the title against the person signing, and if a title has gone missing, say so up front so we can tell you what the replacement needs.
The questions we get asked in Sanibel
- Will you take a dump truck that hauls stone from Alico Road onto Sanibel?Alico Road Quarry and the Fort Myers Mine, both listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration as crushed-stone quarries east of Sanibel, are exactly the kind of work we expect a dump truck here to have done, and we buy those trucks.
- Can you collect a truck parked on the island itself?None of Sanibel’s 12 bridges in the National Bridge Inventory is load-posted or under 14 feet of clearance, so an island address is a normal pickup; give us the street and any gate details.
- My island building company owns the truck; which papers should the company have ready?Sanibel’s 20 construction establishments in County Business Patterns mostly hold trucks in the company’s name, so bring the title in that name, the registration and someone able to sign for the business.
