145 private fleets in FMCSA’s census
FMCSA’s carrier census lists 185 active carriers in Columbia City, and 145 of them run as private fleets hauling their own goods rather than freight for hire. If your truck belongs to a farm, a contractor or a plant that keeps its own trucks, that is the common setup here, and we buy from it directly; have the title in the business name and someone who can sign for the company.
Only 51 of those carriers are registered for interstate work, against 134 that stay inside Indiana, according to the same FMCSA census. A truck that has spent its working life on Whitley County roads is still one we collect from the yard or barn it sits in, so tell us the address and whether a trailer can turn around there.
The census also counts 477 drivers working within 100 miles of their base and 294 going further. Long-haul or local, send us the VIN, the registration and a few photos of the cab, frame and tires, and mention whether it is used close to home or on longer runs.
Freight, machinery and grain on the same roads
General freight is listed by 63 Columbia City carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census, and machinery and large objects by 57. A lowboy tractor that has moved equipment between job sites, or a van tractor that ran general loads, both fit what we purchase, and so does the trailer if you want to sell the pair.
Farm supplies and grain, feed and hay each appear on 41 carrier registrations, again per FMCSA. If yours is a grain truck or a tractor that pulled hopper trailers at harvest, gather the title and any scale or service records you have kept, and tell us whether the truck is parked on the farm or in town.
Among the 47 carriers that report annual mileage to FMCSA, the median truck covers 10,000 miles a year. Read the odometer before you call and give us that figure along with the VIN and the make.
A 2012 median at the inspection stop
Of 72 Columbia City trucks stopped for roadside checks from August 2024 to August 2026, the middle model year was 2012, per FMCSA inspection records. Whatever the year on your title, write it down along with the make and model so we are looking at the right truck from the start.
Those FMCSA records also show close to two in three of the 72, 65 percent, carrying a model year ten or more years back. If you have past inspection reports or a maintenance log, include them with your photos; they give a fuller picture of a Whitley County truck’s working history than pictures alone.
Small owners and bigger yards alike
Three Columbia City carriers in FMCSA’s census each run more than 50 power units: one with 85 trucks and 50 drivers, one with 55 trucks and 89 drivers, and one with 53 trucks and 34 drivers. A yard retiring several tractors at once can send us a list of VINs, and we will arrange to collect them from the lot together.
New registrations are few, with 8 new carriers in 2024 and 2 in 2025 in the FMCSA carrier census. If you are a one-truck owner closing down your operating authority, keep the title and registration together, and we handle the truck while you handle the paperwork with the state.
Quarries, terminals and GM’s rail yards
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Ardmore Stone Quarry 17.8 miles south-east and IMI Huntington Quarry 18.5 miles south, with Hixson Sand & Gravel Inc 19.5 miles north-east. Dump trucks and tri-axles that haul stone and gravel from those pits are trucks we buy, and we can collect one at a quarry lot if the site lets us in; give us a contact at the gate.
West of town, the Energy Information Administration lists the WARSAW petroleum product terminal 18.2 miles out, and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics puts the Asphalt Materials liquid bulk terminal at the same distance. HUNTINGTON, another EIA-listed fuel terminal, sits 18.4 miles south. If your tractor pulled tank trailers between these terminals, tell us which ones and list anything replaced on the unit.
Sixteen miles south-east, the North American Rail Network from the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places the GENERAL MOTORS and GM AUTOLOAD rail yards, at 16.1 and 16.2 miles. A tractor that shuttled loads to those yards can be sold from wherever it now sits, in Columbia City or closer to the plant.
Plant floors, building sites and hog barns
Of the 4,245 Columbia City jobs in the Census Bureau’s LEHD counts for 2023, manufacturing held 385, construction 177, transportation and warehousing 94 and wholesale trade 71. Box trucks, flatbeds and straight trucks from plants and building firms are as welcome as tractors; send the body type with your photos.
County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau counts 52 construction establishments, and USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture records 647 farms in Whitley County, led by corn, soybeans and hogs. Farm trucks often sit for months between seasons, so tell us where yours is parked and whether the title is in a farm name or your own.
The questions we get asked in Columbia City
- Will you pick up a tri-axle sitting at IMI Huntington Quarry?IMI Huntington Quarry is 18.5 miles south of Columbia City on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we come to the truck there. Name the person who unlocks the quarry gate and when the Huntington lot is staffed.
- Will you take a corn-and-bean truck off a Whitley County farm?Whitley County has 647 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with corn and soybeans at the top, and their grain trucks are on our list. Have the title ready and tell us which farm lane the truck is on.
- Our Columbia City yard is retiring a handful of tractors; can they go in one collection?Three local carriers in FMCSA’s census each run more than 50 power units, and fleets of any size can sell to us in one go. Send the VINs as a list and we will plan one collection from your yard.
- What should I gather before selling a 2012 tractor kept in Columbia City?2012 is the median model year across 72 Columbia City trucks in FMCSA roadside inspection records, and we buy trucks of that year and every other. Send the VIN, the odometer reading, the title and photos of the cab, frame and tires.
