Pit-side pickups
Aggregate trucks from the two Middlebury pits
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Middlebury Plant 2, a sand and gravel operation 3.3 miles north-east of town, and Middlebury Plant 1 at 4.7 miles in the same direction. Dump trucks and tri-axles that load at those two pits are trucks we buy, and if yours is parked at a pit yard rather than at home, give us that address and we will collect it there.
For a truck that has hauled aggregate out of either pit, photograph the bed, the hoist and the cab, and note which body is mounted on the chassis. Keep the title and the current registration together so they can go with the truck on pickup day.
Private haulers, lumber loads and grain hoppers
Of the 124 active Middlebury carriers on FMCSA’s carrier census, 92 are private fleets hauling their own goods, not other people’s freight. If your truck belonged to a business that hauled its own product, the bill of sale from that company and the title in its name are the two papers to find first.
General freight is the cargo listed by 53 of those carriers, with machinery and large objects at 33, logs, poles, beams and lumber at 24, and grain, feed and hay at 23, according to the same federal census. A flatbed, a lowboy, a log trailer setup or a grain hopper tractor from any of those lines can be sold to us; tell us which cargo it carried so we know the trailer and coupling to plan for.
Interstate authority is held by 72 of the town’s carriers and 52 run intrastate only, per FMCSA. Have your USDOT number handy when you contact us, along with the registration for whichever authority the truck ran under.
Long-radius drivers
Middlebury rigs on long runs
Carriers here report 1,439 drivers working beyond a 100-mile radius and 314 within it, FMCSA’s census shows. So a Middlebury truck may well be away from Elkhart County when you decide to sell; tell us where it will be parked between runs and we will arrange collection at that spot.
Across 51 local carriers that reported mileage, the median sits at 16,000 miles per truck in FMCSA’s census figures. Write down the current odometer reading along with the VIN before you call, since those two numbers start every conversation we have about a tractor.
Three fleets registered in town run 528, 299 and 200 power units, with 465, 372 and 300 drivers respectively, by FMCSA’s count. Owners selling one unit and fleets clearing several at once are both welcome; send a list of VINs if there are several so each title can be matched up.
Inspectors stopped 674 trucks belonging to Middlebury carriers from August 2024 through August 2026, and FMCSA roadside inspection records put the median model year of that group at 2018. A 38.4 percent share of those 674 stopped trucks were a decade or more past their model year, by FMCSA roadside inspection records.
Whatever the model year, the paperwork we ask for is the same: the title, the registration, any inspection reports from those roadside stops, and service records if you kept them. Clear photos of each side, the dash and the data plate let us confirm the year and make before we schedule anything.
Elkhart, Milford, Granger
Elkhart rail yard and the fuel terminals
Drive 15.9 miles west of Middlebury and you reach the Elkhart rail yard, as mapped in the North American Rail Network from the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A day cab that shuttles between plants and that yard is a truck we collect; let us know if it is kept near the rail lot rather than in town.
Fuel loads around Middlebury come from the Milford Indiana terminal 18.2 miles south-west and the Granger terminal 21.7 miles west, both petroleum product terminals on Energy Information Administration lists. If your tractor has pulled fuel tankers out of either one, say which terminal and include any tank or hazmat paperwork that travels with the unit.
Plant floors and dairy farms
Manufacturing payroll and Elkhart County farms
Manufacturing accounts for 74.1 percent of jobs in Middlebury on the 2023 LEHD job counts from the Census Bureau, while wholesale trade adds 155 jobs, transportation and warehousing 93, and construction 82. Box trucks and tractors tied to plant shipping docks are welcome; if the truck is titled to a manufacturer, the company officer who signs titles should be ready to sign this one.
Elkhart County holds 1,809 farms whose top products are corn, milk and soybeans, in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. Grain trucks and milk haulers parked on a farm lane can be picked up from the farm itself; a clear driveway and the title in hand are what we need on arrival.
Contractors with a dump truck, a flatbed or a rollback to sell can text us photos of the body and the VIN plate to begin.
Posted bridges and a missing title
Bridges, pickup and title paperwork
Fifteen bridges around Middlebury appear in the National Bridge Inventory, three of them load-posted and none with clearance under 14 feet. When you give us the pickup address, mention whether the route to it crosses a posted bridge so we bring the right equipment.
If the title has gone missing, a replacement comes from the state’s title agency, so start that request before you contact us. A title in your name, or a lien release if the truck was financed, is what lets the sale close at pickup.
The questions we get asked in Middlebury
- Will you collect a dump truck from the gravel plants outside Middlebury?Middlebury Plant 1 and Plant 2, both sand and gravel operations listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, sit 4.7 and 3.3 miles north-east of town, and we can collect from either pit yard. Give us the address and have the title with the truck.
