Hart County

Almost no bridges at all — and the few there are, are strong

Within ten miles of the quarry node the 2025 National Bridge Inventory records 25 structures. That is the sparsest road network of any site in this entire body of research.

Seven of the 25 are posted for load and exactly one of those is county-maintained. The nearest posted crossing is 4.4 miles away. And the lowest operating rating among them is 33.3 metric tonnes, about 36.7 US tons — the highest floor of the twenty sites measured alongside it, and within touching distance of the weight at which a fully legal load goes over whole.

Sparse and strong is a rare combination in this state, and it has one cause. This is the heart of the sinkhole plain, where there is almost no surface drainage to bridge. Few watercourses means few bridges; and the handful that were built were built across something that needed spanning properly.

Which makes this the opposite of most of this lane

That combination inverts the usual reading. Elsewhere in this research a low structure count has meant trouble — few roads with a large share of them posted, so no alternative route rather than a longer one. Here the count is lower still and the constraint mostly is not there.

What it means for a truck is straightforward and unusually good news. Loads went out whole, routes were not rebuilt around ratings, and the mileage on a vehicle from around here means roughly what it says. Hours and miles stay in step, which is not true fifty miles east.

The quarry itself works eight people for the operator whose county-named chain runs across this part of the state, carried by the state as source AGP004601, a mile east of town, without the asterisk that marks a mine operation. Its node sits 0.87 miles from the Census centroid. A second Hart County source in the same book is marked inactive.

And the karst reaches past the public road

Those same conditions do one thing that is not benign. This is the Pennyroyal, developed on Mississippian limestone and holding Mammoth Cave, the longest known cave system in the world, and across Hart County the ground over solution voids is not uniformly supported.

So while the public network here is easy, a private haul road on this geology is a recurring maintenance item in a way a road cut over competent rock is not. The surface moves, and suspension, frame and tyres take it.

That is the honest split for anyone reading a truck from here: gentle public roads, demanding ground inside the gate. No permit or discharge condition was researched at this row and none is asserted.

Kentucky weight law

A statute you can actually use

All of that sits under one statute, and this is one of the few places in the lane where it is the number that binds.

Kentucky gives a ten per cent tolerance on its axle weight provisions to vehicles engaged exclusively in hauling crushed stone, fill dirt and rock, soil, bulk sand, coal, phosphate muck, asphalt, concrete, solid waste, tankage or animal residues, livestock, feed for livestock or poultry, and agricultural products — except on the interstate system. Stone qualifies, and so do grain, feed and livestock.

With a 33.3-tonne floor rather than a 4.5-tonne one, the crossings do not take the decision away. A loaded truck can reach the statutory weight on the roads it actually uses, which is the whole difference between this county and the eastern half of the state.

The larger coal-haul figure belongs to a separate certified network — 90,000 lb on one steering axle plus two tandem axles with a five per cent tolerance — and that certified road list was not read for this work.

Kentucky paperwork

We need a title — unless it never had one

Beyond the weight, the paperwork is that one sentence.

Everything after it is a fix rather than a category. A lost title has a counter replacement; where one never existed there is a bonded route. Neither stops a sale.

The statute brands a vehicle salvage when parts and labour to rebuild it to pre-accident condition and legal operation exceed 75 per cent of its retail value, with the cost of reinstalling a deployed airbag system excluded from that calculation — a flat percentage rather than a formula.

And on a truck standing at somebody else’s yard the clock is 45 days, after which, with reasonable or agreed storage or towing charges unpaid, it may be sold to pay them. Liens are recorded through the county clerk here and may be transmitted electronically.

What we buy here

None of that narrows what we will look at. Dump trucks and aggregate haulers off the Hart County Stone quarry, farm trucks and grain hauls off the sinkhole plain, day cabs and road tractors, flatbeds, box trucks and straight trucks, service bodies, and the work trucks and pickups that go with a crew.

Box trucks and straight trucks are not a Pennyroyal thing in particular — they are everywhere. They are on the list because we buy them here too.

Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them. The Hart County Stone quarry a mile east, the farms across the plain and the 25 structures in the whole ten-mile circle are simply where a lot of them turn up.

On collection: we come to you and drive it away, we come to you and tow it, we buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody coming out at all, or you bring it to us. Any of those is ordinary here.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in Horse Cave

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • The mileage looks high for the years.Around Hart County it usually is honest. With a 33.3-tonne floor on the nearest postings, loads went out whole and routes were not rebuilt around ratings, so hours and miles stay in step here in a way they do not further east.
  • It ran a private haul road. Then say so, because the ground is the hard part rather than the public roads. Over solution voids the surface is not uniformly supported and it moves, so suspension, frame and tyres take it.
  • The quarry it worked for is marked inactive. One of the two Hart County sources in the state book is. It is a fact about the site rather than about the truck. Tell us where it actually ran.
  • What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement, and where none ever existed there is a bonded route.
  • How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.

Why people call

Those are the practical questions, and the reasons behind them are mostly personal. Retiring. A medical that didn’t go the way it used to. A contract that ended and took the run with it. A truck standing at the back of a yard since somebody stopped driving it, costing insurance every month it isn’t turning a wheel.

It reads the same across Hart County, whether the truck hauled off the Hart County Stone quarry, ran grain over the sinkhole plain, or did neither.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone by the end of the week. That’s what we’re here for.

Kentucky weight and title rules read from the Kentucky Revised Statutes in August 2026 — verify with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet before acting on them. Bridge figures from the FHWA National Bridge Inventory 2025 Kentucky file, computed within ten miles of the node’s own coordinate. Producer code, directions and the neighbouring inactive source from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Aggregate Source Book; employment from the MSHA mines dataset; centroid distance from the Census 2024 Gazetteer. No permit or discharge condition was researched at this row and none is asserted.
