Quarry and rail siding
Lockport stone and the South McCormick rails
Lockport Mine, a crushed-stone quarry the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists 9.8 miles west of Owenton, is the closest working site to the courthouse square. Dump trucks and tri-axles that haul from a quarry face often stay parked at the pit between jobs, so if yours is sitting at Lockport, tell us the gate hours and who can let a driver in.
Another 5.7 miles past the quarry in the same westward direction, the North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, places the South McCormick rail yard 15.5 miles from town. If your tractor shuttles loads to that siding, send a clear photo of the data plate and the VIN with your first message.
Gravel at Warsaw, limestone at Verona
Up the road toward Gallatin County, the Warsaw Plant is a sand and gravel operation 18.9 miles north, according to Mine Safety and Health Administration records. Gravel haulers that load there and return to Owenton each evening may be titled in either county; check the name and county printed on the title before you contact us, and take any correction to the clerk who issued it.
MLC - Verona is a crushed-stone quarry 20.7 miles north in the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s listings. If your truck splits its week between Verona and Lockport, tell us which yard it will be at on the day, and have the registration and the latest service invoices in the cab.
Southeast and south
Georgetown’s ramp and the Frankfort guard center
Toward Scott County, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists the Georgetown, KY intermodal ramp 24.2 miles southeast, with the GEORGETOWN AUTO rail yard a little closer at 23.4 miles on the North American Rail Network. We collect container chassis and day cabs at the Georgetown yard where they park; a seller living in Owenton can leave the truck there.
Due south at 24.7 miles, the Boone National Guard Center in Frankfort appears in Bureau of Transportation Statistics listings as a military installation. A truck parked near a secured site needs an escort or a gate pass arranged in advance; give us the contact name when you send photos of the cab, frame and tires.
Home-county intrastate outfits
General freight, machinery and hay hauling
Owenton’s 86 active carriers split 67 intrastate to 19 interstate in FMCSA’s carrier census. For a seller, that split usually means a Kentucky-only registration and a truck parked at a farm, shop or home lot in the county rather than at a distant terminal.
General freight is the most common cargo among those carriers, at 32, followed by machinery and large objects at 18 and an even 13 each for farm supplies and for grain, feed and hay, as the federal carrier census records it. Lowboys, flatbeds and grain trailers all fit that list; tell us what the truck pulled so we ask the right questions about the trailer connections.
Private fleets account for 49 of the town’s registered carriers under the same FMCSA records, and three new carriers registered in each of 2024 and 2025. If the truck belongs to a business rather than to you personally, have the company’s title and a signed authorization from whoever can sell it.
Odometers and haul length
Short runs, long runs and three fleet sizes
Of the drivers working for carriers based here, about three in ten (127 of 428) stay inside a hundred-mile radius, and the other 301 run farther, according to FMCSA’s carrier census. A long-haul tractor may be parked out of state when you decide to sell; tell us the city where it sits and we arrange collection there.
FMCSA’s carrier census puts the median at 17,500 miles a year per truck, among the 16 local carriers that reported mileage. Keep the odometer photo and the most recent annual inspection sheet together, since those two items answer most of what we ask first.
The three biggest operations registered in town field 49, 27 and 19 power units, with 60, 15 and 25 drivers respectively, by FMCSA’s count. A fleet retiring several units at once can list every VIN in one message, and we work through them together.
Tobacco barns and wholesale routes
Cattle, tobacco and soybean ground
Owen County holds 674 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with cattle, tobacco and soybeans as the leading products. Livestock haulers, grain trucks and straight trucks with farm plates often sit in barns or field lots off gravel lanes, so describe the access road and whether a tow truck can turn around near it.
Wholesale trade employs 157 of the 639 people who work in Owenton, a 24.6 percent share in the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023, while County Business Patterns lists four construction establishments. Box trucks from a wholesale route and dump trucks from a small contractor are both trucks we collect from the business lot.
Bryan Street
The Owen County Clerk, a block from the square
Kentucky titles go through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, which works through county clerk offices; here that is the Owen County Clerk at 136 West Bryan Street, Owenton, 40359, about 0.2 miles from the center of town. If the title is lost, a duplicate is requested at that counter before the sale.
Bring a photo ID and the registration when you visit the clerk, and if a lender is still listed on the title, ask the clerk’s office what lien release the Transportation Cabinet needs. With the clear title in hand, send us a photo of its front and back along with the truck’s photos.
