Allen County

A rating of two hundred kilos, and why the minimum is the wrong number

Allen County Stone works 11 people, a mile and a bit north of town, carried by the state as source AGP002101 without the asterisk that marks a mine operation. Its node sits 4.22 miles from the Census centroid.

Within ten miles the 2025 National Bridge Inventory records 96 structures — 75 in Kentucky and 21 in Tennessee, because the circle crosses the state line and is computed from every state file with structures inside it. Twenty-three are posted for load and 21 are rated below legal loads, 12 of those county-maintained, with the nearest 0.87 miles out.

And the lowest operating rating among them is 0.2 metric tonnes. Two hundred kilos. That is not a bridge any vehicle in this trade has ever thought about, and quoting it as “the floor” would be alarming and useless at the same time.

The number that governed a load was twenty-seven tonnes

That is why the useful figure is not the minimum but the lowest crossing that still clears the commercial floor. An empty tandem dump runs to roughly 11.0 tonnes; below that nothing commercial goes over at all, loaded or empty, and the 0.87 miles to the nearest posting tells you nothing about which kind it is.

The lowest rating at or above that mark here is 27.2 metric tonnes, about 30.0 US tons, 8.83 miles out. Since the rating counts the gross weight of the rating vehicle, that cap admits roughly 16.2 tonnes of stone over the tare — a real load rather than a gesture, and one of the more workable numbers in this whole lane.

Read in bands: below 11.0 tonnes no commercial vehicle crosses even empty; between 11.0 and 36.3 it crosses part loaded; at 36.3 and above a legal load goes over whole. And treat any floor as a minimum for the circle rather than for the route — at 64.1 per cent of the sites measured for this work a tighter crossing lies between ten miles and twenty.

Sinkhole country, and a chain built around county lines

Those crossings are scarce for a reason under the trucks. This is the Pennyroyal, the sinkhole plain of south-central Kentucky, developed on Mississippian limestone and holding Mammoth Cave, the longest known cave system in the world. Karst drains underground rather than by surface streams, so it carries few watercourses and therefore few bridges.

It reaches past the gate too: across Allen County the ground over solution voids is not uniformly supported, so a private haul road here is a recurring maintenance item in a way a road cut over competent rock is not. No permit or discharge condition was researched at this row and none is asserted.

The operator is the one whose sources in this research are named for the counties they sit in — this one, and four more across neighbouring counties. On ground where bridges make the next county hard to reach, a chain of county-named quarries is a logistics answer rather than a branding one: if you cannot carry a load across, you start it on the other side.

Kentucky weight law

The allowance, and the line it stops at

All of that sits under one statute, and near a state line it has an obvious edge.

Kentucky gives a ten per cent tolerance on its axle weight provisions to vehicles engaged exclusively in hauling crushed stone, fill dirt and rock, soil, bulk sand, coal, phosphate muck, asphalt, concrete, solid waste, tankage or animal residues, livestock, feed for livestock or poultry, and agricultural products — except on the interstate system. It is Kentucky law, so it stops at the line as surely as it stops at a ramp, and 21 of the structures in that ten-mile circle are on the far side of it. What Tennessee allows on those was not researched for this page and is not asserted either way.

Underneath the statute the crossings still bind first, and with a workable 27.2-tonne crossing eight miles out, this is one of the places in this lane where a truck could actually reach the allowance.

The larger coal-haul figure belongs to a separate certified network — 90,000 lb on one steering axle plus two tandem axles with a five per cent tolerance — and that certified road list was not read for this work.

Kentucky paperwork

We need a title — unless it never had one

Beyond the weight, the paperwork is that one sentence.

Everything after it is a fix rather than a category. A lost title has a counter replacement; where one never existed there is a bonded route. Neither stops a sale.

The statute brands a vehicle salvage when parts and labour to rebuild it to pre-accident condition and legal operation exceed 75 per cent of its retail value, with the cost of reinstalling a deployed airbag system excluded from that calculation — a flat percentage rather than a formula, and another rule that changes on the far side of the line.

And on a truck standing at somebody else’s yard the clock is 45 days, after which, with reasonable or agreed storage or towing charges unpaid, it may be sold to pay them. Liens are recorded through the county clerk here and may be transmitted electronically.

What we buy here

None of that narrows what we will look at. Dump trucks and aggregate haulers off the Allen County Stone quarry, farm trucks and grain hauls off the sinkhole plain, day cabs and road tractors on the run south, flatbeds, box trucks and straight trucks, service bodies, and the work trucks and pickups that go with a crew.

Box trucks and straight trucks are not a Pennyroyal thing in particular — they are everywhere. They are on the list because we buy them here too.

Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them. The Allen County Stone quarry north of town, the farms across the plain and the 96 structures between here and the line are simply where a lot of them turn up.

On collection: we come to you and drive it away, we come to you and tow it, we buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody coming out at all, or you bring it to us. Any of those is ordinary here.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in Scottsville

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • I was told there is a bridge near me rated for nothing. There is one at 0.2 metric tonnes in the ten-mile circle, and no truck in this trade ever used it. The number that governed a load around Allen County Stone was the 27.2-tonne crossing 8.83 miles out, which takes about 16.2 tonnes of stone.
  • It ran into Tennessee.Twenty-one of the 96 structures in that circle are over the line, so it is normal here. Kentucky’s tolerance is Kentucky law and stops there; what Tennessee allows on those crossings we did not research. Tell us where it ran.
  • It ran a private haul road on karst. Then say so. Over the sinkhole plain the ground above solution voids is not uniformly supported, the surface moves, and suspension, frame and tyres take it.
  • What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement, and where none ever existed there is a bonded route.
  • How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.

Why people call

Those are the practical questions, and the reasons behind them are mostly personal. Retiring. A medical that didn’t go the way it used to. A contract that ended and took the run with it. A truck standing at the back of a yard since somebody stopped driving it, costing insurance every month it isn’t turning a wheel.

It reads the same across Allen County, whether the truck hauled off the Allen County Stone quarry, ran grain over the sinkhole plain, or did neither.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone by the end of the week. That’s what we’re here for.

Kentucky weight and title rules read from the Kentucky Revised Statutes in August 2026 — verify with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet before acting on them. Bridge figures from the FHWA National Bridge Inventory 2025 files, computed within ten miles of the node’s own coordinate and from every state file with structures inside that circle; the payload arithmetic uses the inventory’s own gross-weight item against an 11.0-tonne empty tandem. Producer code and directions from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Aggregate Source Book; employment from the MSHA mines dataset; centroid distance from the Census 2024 Gazetteer. Tennessee’s weight limits were not researched for this page and are not asserted either way.
