Jefferson County

A yard attached here that sits inside the city next door

Two rows are attached to this place. A rail yard under Norfolk Southern sits 2.16 miles from the centroid, and a liquid-bulk terminal 6.74 miles out.

The yard’s coordinate falls inside Louisville, which holds a page of its own. So the row is attached here by nearest-place fallback while physically sitting in the larger city that surrounds this one — which is what happens when a smaller municipality is enclosed by a bigger one and a rail line runs between them.

Every rail-yard row in this dataset records the mean of a track polyline’s vertices rather than a surveyed point. A line running from one place into another puts its mean wherever the track runs, and here that landed on the far side of a municipal boundary from the row’s own filing.

Which means the city’s constraints are this town’s constraints

That containment is not just bookkeeping, because it settles which network a truck here worked. The answer is the Jefferson County metropolitan one, and it is unusually restrictive.

Around a stone operation elsewhere in the same county, the 2025 National Bridge Inventory records 286 structures inside ten miles, of which 64 are posted for load and 62 are rated below legal loads — 31 of those county-maintained. The lowest that still clears an empty tandem dump is 18.1 metric tonnes, about 20.0 US tons, which admits roughly 7.1 tonnes of stone.

Those are that node’s figures and they are labelled as such. But they describe the same city streets, and they say something plain: this is a dense network with a great many restricted crossings on it, and a truck working here spent its time routing round them.

Kentucky weight law

A tolerance the interstates take away

All of that sits under one statute whose main exception is everywhere in this county.

Kentucky gives a ten per cent tolerance on its axle weight provisions to vehicles engaged exclusively in hauling crushed stone, fill dirt and rock, soil, bulk sand, coal, phosphate muck, asphalt, concrete, solid waste, tankage or animal residues, livestock, feed for livestock or poultry, and agricultural products — except on the interstate system. In a county ringed and crossed by interstates that makes the allowance a surface-street rule in practice, and the surface streets are where the restricted crossings are.

Refined petroleum product is not on that list at all, so a tanker off a liquid-bulk terminal never carried the allowance anywhere.

The larger coal-haul figure belongs to a separate certified network — 90,000 lb on one steering axle plus two tandem axles with a five per cent tolerance — and that certified road list was not read for this work.

Kentucky paperwork

We need a title — unless it never had one

Beyond the weight, the paperwork is that one sentence.

Everything after it is a fix rather than a category. A lost title has a counter replacement; where one never existed there is a bonded route. Neither stops a sale.

The statute brands a vehicle salvage when parts and labour to rebuild it to pre-accident condition and legal operation exceed 75 per cent of its retail value, with the cost of reinstalling a deployed airbag system excluded from that calculation — a flat percentage rather than a formula.

And on a truck standing at somebody else’s yard the clock is 45 days, after which, with reasonable or agreed storage or towing charges unpaid, it may be sold to pay them. Liens are recorded through the county clerk here and may be transmitted electronically.

KRS 186A.520 on branding, KRS 186A.195 on liens, and KRS ch. 376 on storage and towing. Information, not legal advice.

What we buy here

None of that narrows what we will look at. Day cabs and road tractors off the drayage work, tankers and bulk trailers off the terminal trade, box trucks and straight trucks, dump trucks and aggregate haulers, flatbeds, rollbacks, service bodies, and the work trucks and pickups that go with a crew.

Box trucks and straight trucks are not a Jefferson County thing in particular — they are everywhere. They are on the list because we buy them here too.

Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them. The Norfolk Southern yard 2.16 miles out, the terminal 6.74 miles out and the city streets that surround both are simply where a lot of them turn up.

On collection: we come to you and drive it away, we come to you and tow it, we buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody coming out at all, or you bring it to us. A municipal boundary running through a rail yard is not a complication we pass on to you.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in Shively

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • My address says one city and the yard says another. That is this whole page. The coordinate for that Norfolk Southern yard lands inside Louisville while the row is attached here, 2.16 miles from this centroid. We buy on either side of it.
  • It never got out of the city. Then hours beat miles by a long way. Dense Jefferson County streets with 62 restricted crossings in a ten-mile circle mean traffic and constant routing round, and that lands on the clutch, the brakes and the suspension first.
  • It carried petroleum product. Then it never had the ten per cent tolerance, because refined product is not on the Kentucky list. Barrels, hatches, valves and hoses are where that work shows — tell us what it carried.
  • What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement, and where none ever existed there is a bonded route.
  • How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.

Why people call

Those are the practical questions, and the reasons behind them are mostly personal. Retiring. A medical that didn’t go the way it used to. A contract that ended and took the run with it. A truck standing at the back of a yard since somebody stopped driving it, costing insurance every month it isn’t turning a wheel.

It reads the same either side of the boundary, whether the truck worked the Norfolk Southern yard 2.16 miles out, ran tank work off the terminal, or did neither.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone by the end of the week. That’s what we’re here for.

Kentucky weight and title rules read from the Kentucky Revised Statutes in August 2026 — verify with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet before acting on them. Yard operator, place containment and coordinate provenance from the central node list; the containing city is recorded as holding its own page and the attachment is recorded as a nearest-place fallback. What the yard handles could not be determined from any source read. The bridge figures are measured at another node in the same county from the FHWA National Bridge Inventory 2025 files and are labelled as that node’s rather than this town’s. The certified coal-haul road list was not read.
